That would have made for a great title! But I don't hate them, I love them, we just need to part ways thats all! Having said that, I am air layering my Dean McDowell so I am probably keeping part of that one! Letting go is so hard for me. I also have the bit of the mamei that broke off, I might just keep that one too!

I love the humor in this video and also the reality of making choices based on logic rather than impulse and peer pressure! For every plant I am tempted by now, I whip out my phone and do a search for its full potential and care needs. Plants are like puppies….they’re all cute until they grow into a hungry untamable problem!

I love my Gloriosum. It is not potted in one large rectangluar pot, but in a bunch of small squared ones on my windowsill. When it grows out of its latest pot I just put a new pot next to it. And if its too big overall, I cut the oldest part off and have a fully rootet, perfectly fine plant in its own pot. I never repot the large one, I just cut one side and expand the other. Crawlers are super easy if handled this way... it's the circle of potting. :D

I’m in NSW and would love to get the Dean McDowell. Or even a cutting of it. I love my Gloriosum. The thing I like about crawlers is that they are used to being on the forest floor, so they can deal with less light. That means my climbers and hoyas can get the prime light spots. I do a lot of research before I buy a plant on wish list. This has meant that I’ve avoided the dramas of unstable variegation and the various other complications that can come with trendy plants.
@rhi963

crawlers are amazing, too many plants need poles these days, the lower light needs are EVERYTHING. i want to make long shelves along a less lit wall in my future house to show my crawlers off. i like how theyre not going to get too tall ever and you can keep them as big or as small as you would like

6 months ago i saw my first moss pole video on youtube, i believe it was your channel! I set out to make my first moss pole and get my first philodendron climbing and thriving. The plant that caught my eye at the local nursery was a P. Plowmanii....and of course i knew nothing about climbers vs crawlers. I set it up on the pole and for the next 2 months I watched in sadness as my Plowmanii just....slowly died lol. What a way to start my moss pole aroid journey! I learned a lot and since made more sensible purchases....I've got a paraiso verde and an atabapoense who are obviously loving life on the pole. That poor plowmanii though lol!

You don't need to let them grow straight. You can have them in a large round pot which is deep and they'll turn inwards in the pot. And they need less light!

My collection grew exponentially within 2 years, so I had to recognize that I needed to give myself a one-in, one-out rule. I only get a new plant if I give away one that I already have. This has helped me refine my choices by controlling the NUMBER of plants I can properly care for. The other way I curb my buying impulse is by being ruthless about the actual plant CHOICES I make. I'm not willing to have a closed cabinet, nor many grow lights, so if the plant cannot live in the humidity and sunlight exposure I can offer, we cannot be roommates. I am happy admiring other people's collections without the stress of having to put extra-extra efforts in keeping plants I don't have the space, time, or conditions to grow.

For crawlers, why can't you just cut off the part that has overgrown the pot and either replant it inside the same pot to give the pot a lush appearance, throw it away, or sale the cutting ? I do that with my hanging plants. I regularly trim off the parts that got too long and keep the plant looking tidy. Currently I have a small gloriosum. It's about to climb outside of the pot; I plan to cut the overhanging part and replant it in the same pot. Remember that for climbers, you'll have to cut off the top at some point too unless you have a 40 foot ceiling and a moss pole equally that tall.
@TheLecaQueen
@TheLecaQueen 2 ай бұрын
You could do that, you could do a lot of things, but in this video, I am really saying that I do not want to do all those things, and in most cases I actually can't, so for me, crawlers are not a great plant choice at all. Knowing what I know about the care I am willing to provide, I am best avoiding this plant type completely, both for my and the plants' sake!

After 1st plant i knew another crawlers will follow. Many people facing same issue including me. I had exactly same plants as shown in video. However im slowly converting into Anthurium guy because even climbers grow so fast that i have no time to do all the maintenance. Anthuriums are perfect for this - they are beautiful, doesn`t require as much space, as much light and they flower quite often so that`s added bonus of making crosses. Today im going to cut my Splendid which grew 2.5m tall in 5 months !

I went crazy for plants spring 2019, I felt I > had to < get a pilea pepermiodes and a zz plant. Didn't really like them much, and proceeded to kill the ZZ. The pilea just would not die! So finally after 4 years, I started watering it in earnest. It's surprisingly still alive on a bottom dark shelf in too small of a pot. I wish I had someone to give plants to. I love my pasta and mamei. I would love to have a Dean McDowell, top category for me. But I have an approx. 12x12 ft office with upwards of 150? plants. I've got 6 more expected in about a week. I mainly buy because of what's available to me in rural Canada and the price. Glad prices are coming down!!

Crawlers are a hard no for me! Like you, I just don't have the space for them! Plus, I don't want to have plants crawling horizontally below knee height, they've got to go up and fill the space vertically. I have some floor space that will be occupied by plants when I find the right one for the space, and for me! As for peer pressure, no, it doesn't really affect me. It might get a plant onto my "to research" list, but if it ends up not fitting my requirements it will never make my wishlist.

I do my research before putting a plant on my “Grail” list it doesn’t always work, sometimes I just want to see if I can grow them too, I just picked up a gloriosum and sp Columbia to see what growing crawlers is like, it’s not necessarily going by trends, but to see if I can be successful with them. Plus, I stick to buying local, I don’t order plants online unless it’s a big deal to me, but most I can wait for them to become available here at home

I resist the pressure by thinking ahead about how this plant will stress me out in my home and so ai just go to nurseries or botanical gardens gardens and enjoy them there without the work involved! I have my Mamei on a moss pole for the moment and so far it’s growing up it. But I know there will come a time when it will do its thing. And for this reason I have resisted the urge to buy any other crawlers….its not practical for me and my space 😊

My plant and pet rule are similar. If it requires more care than I can provide, then I can't have it. I'm also an oddball in that, I'm not swayed by every "new" plant that I see. I've also learned that certain plants are just not for me (e.g. succulents, ferns, etc.), so while they may be pretty, I know I don't have (or am not willing to provide) what they require. I feel guilty when I can't properly care for a plant. I guess my insight is that I know myself well, lol.

The solution to not becoming a plant hoarder is to have one piece husband who doesn't let you buy new plants because our house is not a botanical garden😁 . The ones I have are already too much for him and when he sees a gnat flying by he is going crazy....that is why I am transferring plants into leca ( Amazonica is already suffering and some leaves are dying 😔) , perlite or vermiculite media. Hope I won't loose all of them. I am afraid about the Pilea Chinese money plant- already killed 2 last year with fertilizer granules.

I somehow dislike the strong midline of these pillowy type philodendrons. It's like the midline of abs! Mamei, dean mcdowell, gloriosum, pastazanum... Probably the weirdest reason anyone has ever given but it's a dealbreaker for me😅 Dean McDowell is the ugliest to me. It's very easy to resist the fomo when you are as judgemental as me in what is coming to plants😂 I just keep my head and not fall easily for plants that other people like. It helps my home not to fill up too quickly...

Great video! I have always had plants and chose them to fit my space, light requirements and lifestyle. All my plants are drought tolerant. When I travel, I don’t have to worry about them needing water. While I find some trendy plants beautiful, I would never buy them.

I would be delighted to take any...or all....of these three all of these plants....off your hands. They are beautiful and I am a glutton for punishment! Lol

They are an insanely diverse family of plants that all look super different and grow completely different. I'm curious why you don't like them.
