Labor (before the show, during, after), stress (traveling these days is horrendous), expenses (food, drink, wifi, uber, etc), most shows (except the big shows) attract tire kickers & low ballers. Also at these shows you gotta be careful in fakes. Sell online, Buy at local shows.

As one that lives in Chicagoland area there are plenty of low ballers and such but the large 3 day shows are actually worse in terms of what you note - even as a local. Same table after table display of cards in nice holders priced to sell - well to sell at Feb 2021 prices. And in terms of local shows being bad - you definitely can buy and sell at smaller shows if you are there to do business versus showing off your collection

Welcome to the world of being a dealer. I've been dealing in collectibles since 1990 (just NOT cards). Ever do a comic show? The prices for booths for larger ones run $850 and UP. Same with some larger anime shows too. I stopped doing the National over 15 years ago because prices for a booth were HIGH THEN! (And...I was local too.) Shows have their place...but the costs can add up.....quick. I see, in some hobbies, big shows going down this coming year and I expect to see less dealers. Booth prices are getting too high and the sales aren't there. NO one minds paying a high booth price IF the sales are commensurate with the booth price. Here's what I and my wife have learned - you WANT TO make money? You cut the shit out of your costs as much as possible. Eat cheap and stay at lower budget motels (just make sure they are in safe neighborhood).

Hello everyone….Covid is over, can’t spend money if you ain’t making money. People thought they could make a living at selling cards and they were wrong, a card is only worth as much as someone is willing pay for it.

Hey Troy love the video. I’m curious if you would be open to address your approach to taxes with sports cards as a hobby. What is your approach and what is the “correct” way to do it. Thanks!

Your not wrong really there are too many shows and I think it’s a bit over saturated. Shows like the national and Dallas will still be good but with whatnot being almost like a 24 hour card show it’s much more worth it to sell there and eBay

$600 table Fees and $75 display case rentals..... Sounds like the Burbank Show. I was ready to sell at the Feb show but it doesn't make dollars and cents and I live in California. The guys selling F1, NBA, and newer NFL are getting killed. There's more stability in vintage unless your buying into the Hype machine of 2020/21 with Jackie Robinson Rookies. There's still a lot of money to be had in the hobby but Paying $600 for a 8 foot table for a local show isn't it.

You could have bought another nice LeBron rc for your pc for the price it cost to travel. I hope you met new people that can help your business bc that’s all that shows are good for now is the social networking aspect for your business and social media accounts. Facts! Why would you want to overpay at a show when eBay is selling better cards everyday on their platform?

I’d like to see the process of how and what you choose in low - mid range soccer cards to flip and hold. Obviously a changing environment but I’m guessing top players and RC’s high on the list. Cheers dude!

This might be old school, but have you looked at the cost of train tickets? I'd also find someone you trust to bump a room/couch from to reduce cost. Red-eye plane tickets can also be cheaper. Good luck with your card journey.

One of the challenges of traveling across the country is the limit on the # of cards you can actually bring - especially slabbed cards. I am in Chicagoland area and stick to within driving area. Yes it would be nice to be a "national" dealer but I know my place. The mid market is doing just fine ($5 - $100). Collectors will always collect. Just might to do a slight adjustment. For example some shows may be better just to attend. Dallas without the labor makes more sense. Figure out the shows where you can buy to feed the shows where you can sell. And don't write off the local shows - just maybe change what you offer at those ones. A ton of slabs may not be the best cards there

Too many shows, if they reduce shows more money will show up. Think back 2 years ago when all there were was collectors roaming. Collectors turned to flippers, only 5-10% only buy and not sell.

Big Facts Troy ! Show runners are getting greedy charging outlandish prices for tables and as a dealer your not selling anything unless its at 80% comps and all everyone wants to do is trade.

I assumed it was hard to justify going to shows that often. I live in San Diego and feel fortuante I can make most So Cal shows a day trip but dont know that I could do overnights for shows that often too. Maybe Dallas once a year, National depending on location and monthly shows down here. Good luck in 2023
