Shop issue. My local shop will pull anything off the wall toss on a D loop and a Biscuit and let you try the bow out… if you want it set up after the sale then they put in the work for perfect draw length/weight setup where you want it (and they have a small setup charge for that) but charge a setup fee just to test the bare bow you think you may want is a bit too much.

I would say PSE does have a problem with their dealer network. I live in the middle of WI and have to drive 90 miles to find the nearest dealer and he only carries 1-2 models and never anything over 32" so I bought a used NXT 35. Like the bow but they need better dealers in WI. When I emailed them and asked PSE who there biggest dealer was in WI I called that dealer and they did'tn have any in stock and was't sure if they would be getting any in before fall. 🤔

When I got into archery about 5 years ago I went to our local archery shop. I went in and said I would like to get sized up for a bow. They looked at me like I was stupid. I didnt know anything about archery except that the bow had to fit. I am 6'3 with a 33 in dl. I had to explain that I wanted to get into archery and needed to know what size bow I needed. They checked me out but acted like I was annoying them. The only bow they had close was a $2500 hoyt target bow that went to 32 in. And that was the bare bow no nothing on it. I was like " I am not paying 2500 bucks to find out next week I dont even like archery". I left so angry. I went 5 blocks away to bass pro shops and the guy came out and started talking to me showing me the bows and brands. Measured me and sized me up and told me straight up " i dont have anything that will fit you right but i have a few that you can try and i can show you how to fudge and be able to shoot them to see if you like it or not" He spent 4 hours set up 4 bows and let me shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot. I left and went home to talk to my wife and went back a couple hours later and bought a complete setup. The next week i went back and bought a 2nd setup so i could teach others also. Point being..... I agree with you completely. A shop that appreciates you is so important.

You should change the title to “Why I’m not Shooting a PSE,” instead of the current title, that shop doesn’t represent PSE as a brand. I had a PSE that developed a small crack in the limb which fell under warranty, took it to the closet PSE dealer for them to repair. When I got the bow back, it was completely jacked up, there was no way I was going to take it back to them, nor was I going to pay another shop to make it right. I called PSE and explained what happened, they told me to send it in and they’d get it back in order. When I received the bow back, it was as good as the day I bought it brand new, I was extremely pleased with my experience with them. On the setup cost, that is crazy for something you want to try before you buy. I bought a Vertix last summer from a shop in Savannah, GA, I shot several bows before making my decision, none of which they charged me for. In fact, they didn’t even charge me for the setup and paper tune, only the bow and accessories.

Interestingly enough there is a local bow shop to me in Indiana that did the same thing. Needless to say I did not buy a bow from them. The owner told me that once it is shot by a customer that doesn't buy it they have to sell it as used, which sure I guess I can see that. However, I have always felt that to know the bow is right for you then you have to have the ability to test it.

On what basis will my purchasing decision be based? Based on the excellent level of service that I know I can expect from my local pro-shop [less than an hour's drive from where I live] and which has serviced my Hoyt bows for nearly ten years, although not a Hoyt dealer, DOES stock Prime bows Regardless of whether or not I do choose a Prime Black 3, I know I can still expect a similarly-excellent level of service. I will have a really tough choice to make as I've shot Hoyt for nigh on twenty years BUT the nearest pro shop who stocks Hoyt bows [but NOT Prime] is three hours drive away and I will not be able to shoot both bows side by side. And I live in the east. Of England.

I started to just do visual checks on it and it was waaaaaaay off. I walked into the shop and the owner was there. He seemed to already have an attitude. (FYI, I’ve spent some money in this place). I told him i had gotten the bow restrung there and it needed tuned bad. He proceeded to say “$50 an hour”. I said to him, ok but what if you guys didn’t do your job right setting the bow up? I mean, the center shot was off and the the alignment was way off. So, he conceded that if they were at fault he’d fix it.. he eyed it and said it wasn’t right. Probably would have taken 5-10 minutes to get that thing setup for a few test shots and the fact that they aren’t even interested in getting an unsold 2020 Evo series bow in stock is ridiculous. I would never set foot in that place again. That being said, if it’s not gonna lead to divorce then I would find a way to at least put a few shots through one of the 2020 Evo bows at another shop and maybe add it to your lineup for review. The Evolve Cam has got to be one of the best draw cycles I’ve tried, highly adjustable with regards to draw length and lettoff, and last year PSE beefed up their flagship models with 1/4 inch axles that do not flex like the 3/16 axles they were formerly running. You’re definitely missing out on a very sweet bow if you don’t give the PSE EVOs a try.

Lancaster Archery...shot 3 different bows. THEY set up up 2 for me to run arrows through. I ended up buying one of the actual ones I shot because it was clearly the best bow...(RX5). The only thing that cost a dime was the bow and THAT setup..

Absolutely not, I would have done the same thing. Just remember you’re never going to please all. You could add the PSE and someone will say: “where’s the Martin” or whatever. Block out the noise.

Good point. I do want to shoot some of the smaller custom shops next year if Jocelyn let's me do this again! I think it would be cool to see how a handmade limited run bow holds up to one of the bigger guys.

As a customer, I totally agree. No way a shop should charge you to try a bow. A good friend was a shop owner, and he did not charge people to try bows, as he knew it would be bad for business. But he also lamented the fact that many of his customers would go into his shop, work with him to find a bow that fit, try that bow, have him adjust the draw length and weight, and basically get it spec’d just right. Customer would then thank him for his time, bounce, and find the same bow online (though often used) for less than MSRP. It was a catch 22 for sure. Shop owner started assuming everyone looking at bows was using his shop as a test facility and not intending to buy anything, so he wouldn’t always spend the time with customers, potentially losing sales. Or he would spend a ton of time with people looking at bows at the expense of time with people looking for accessories, only to have bow lookers not buy anything. It’s a tough life as a bow shop owner for sure. Problem is that many of the guys supporting a shop by purchasing bows, will shoot them for a few months, decide they want something else, then offload their lightly used bow online, for 2/3 or less retail. This cycle repeats monthly, and the used market just gets saturated with quality gear on the cheap. And I’ll be real honest, I loved my friend and his shop, but I recognized that buying a new bow was a piss poor investment. Anything built in the last 10 years (and often earlier) will shoot arrows as good as anything made today (2020/2021). Case in point, I routinely shoot 300 scores on the NFAA 5 spot target with my made in 2000 PSE Silhouette target bow. For indoor 20 yard shooting, why would I drop $1200 or more, for a bow that will do exactly the same thing? And if I want to try something new, knowing I might not like it, why would I buy it new? I will gladly let someone else take the hit on that experiment. I also understand attitudes like mine are part of the reason bow shops have a hard time. But on the flip side, I won’t waste their time trying bows I have no intention of buying.

I feel you but you're taking it out on PSE. Your video title suggests you have something against the brand based on your evaluation. Why not post the title of the shop saying do not go here instead of judging the brand on a crap dealer.

I have never had my shop even hint at the idea of a setup fee to try a bow. I had four different bows laid out to try in 2019. They did a basic D-loop and whisker biscuit setup on each and adjusted all of their draw lengths just so I could shoot them. I walked out of that shop that day with a new bow. This year, I didn't need to try any. I went in and told my guy it was VXR time, and he pulled one off the wall that hadn't been shot by anyone and set it up.

I’m not sure what shop your mentioning but I’m from the middle Tennessee area and I’ve been using “the sportsman store” in Dickson tn it’s about 40 miles southwest of Nashville and I absolutely love that place they also don’t have a very big variety when it comes to pse but those guys will get you what you need and are willing to take the time to make sure everything is the way you want it. I got a mission craze 2 for my 13th birthday as my first bow and those guys sat with me for an hour and a half teaching me everything I needed to know about shooting since then I won’t go anywhere else for my archery needs they’ve done plenty of amazing work on my pse brute nxt and a bunch of my previous pse bows

I've never had a shop charge me a fee for set up to try out a bow. I do support my local archery shops as much as possible. I'm waiting on mods for my new Elite Ritual 33 to change the draw length from 29 to 30 inches. Got the bow through a local shop at a super deal, but bows were sold as set up by Elite for that deal, and I had to order the mods. Elite did not ship the mods with the bow, so I am waiting on Elite.

I started off with a PSE Bowmadness XS ten plus years ago from bass pro.. I have been going to a local archery pro shop in AZ for YEARS. I have shot countless flagship bows and they have set them up many times over for free of charge. My dad bought a flagship bow and then I got my daughter all set up.... My wife suprised me this year with a Hoyt RX7 Ultra. Had the shop not treated me this well over the years I would have gone somewhere else.

I have never charged to test shoot but I understand the shops frustration. As a shop owner myself you adjust bows, setup bows to specific draw lengths just to have them purchase online it sucks. I was charged $20.00 to test paddle kayaks at a kayak shop but when I purchased they credited me the $20.00 towards the purchase. It's a fine line to tow in the archery market especially in this day.

Went to absolute archery in casper wy and got my PSE NXT EVO 35. Great shop got a free extra set of custom strings and a discount on all products in the store. And I got a military discount. Not only did they do all of this when I showed up they encouraged me to go shoot there competitors bows at another shop so that I got a bow that I truely liked. Sounds like you need to find a better shop. By the way I shot the Matthew's vtx and one of hoyts new bows and hands down I liked the feel of the pse.

Glad you've got a good shop around you. I like the shop I got the Mathews from and that's the one that ended up winning my shootout this year. I did end up going to another shop and shooting the PSE and I was a big fan.

Brandon Mcdonald for sure good shop. The only thing that bugged me about the Matthew's was it felt top heavy. Other than that it shot like the pse for me. And The hoyt was smooth as silk but had some weird vibration I didn't like and the grip didn't fit right.. I am glad you where able to try out the pse.

I think you hit the nail on the head at the end when you called it what it was - disrespect. Not that the shop HAS to give you any special perks that they wouldn’t give other people. But like you said, this is a very service-oriented industry, and loyalty to a shop is a two-way street. You’re not some schmuck who’s gonna buy a bow or some accessories and never go back, and you had already established that with them.

The psychology of that store's approach is aligning with punishing behavior they don't like Which would be people window shopping without any intention of buying. Versus rewarding behavior they want. Which is to get it in your hands and get attached to the idea of buying it. What made me dive into archery headfirst wasn't just the shooting. it was the fact that my shop takes care of me. Like the Cheers of archery.
