Why Iaito is preferred over the Bokken for Iaido training? : a Namazu Shugyo Archive

there's a saying in the Iaido community that encourages training using an iaito over bokken especially for beginners.....but why is that?
Bokken/Bokuto is much safer and accessible compare to the heavy more expansive Iaito. Not to mention some countries won't allow for such things.
"So what? I'm not allowed to train and practice iaido without it?"
i hear the internet retorting back......
My answer: Of course you can! I whole-heartedly encourage you to push through any limitations and difficulties to keep training regardless of whatever tools you have access too.
This video sole-purpose for education & knowledge sharing based of my journey and I will never claim i have all the answers, but it is a knowledge worth knowing.
If anything i hope this video fires you up & encourage you to keep training more with your chosen methods & tools.

I have a piece of bamboo that is curved like a katana. You say a 200 dollar piano is better than none I have a 10 cent piano. Great content btw I learned some new things and re-learned some others.

To be honest, I love using both iaito and bokken! Using bokken is a great way of not focusing to much on the tachikaze when cutting.

Hello. Great video as always. Can I have a question? I'm currently considering whether to get a shinken-style hisaki on the iaito I'm about to order. I believe it will give the swings a better sound, but I'm also weighing what effect will it potentially have against the not-that-low price tag of hundred bucks Tozando is putting on this additional feature. What do you think? Worth it? Thank you very much. Keep up the good work!

im not sure what you mean, are you buying an iaito or a shinken? if it to make the swishing sound i think you meant the bohi. It's personal preference, but having a bohi helps to let you know if your cut is properly alligned.

@@NamazuRyuSaiken Yes. I mean the ending of the bohi towards the tip of the sword. And it will be a iaito, but on Tozando (and perhaps elsewhere), they offer to make that ending of the bohi to be very much the same as it is on shinkens. It's not cheap but I'm told by my rokudan sensei it helps with the swoosh sound, so I'm gonna trust him and try it.

@@MikeGill87 i see! then yes having the Bohi swooshing feedback is always helpful. One thing i noticed if you are practicing indoors with airconditioning on, the shwooshing will be less, so it forces us to really put more empahsis on our allignment and strenght behind the cut. an indoor room with no disruptive wind is easy to make the swhooshing sound :)

It does yea, but sounded more...bassy than iaito
