Definitely not wrong about that 😂. Tho, this playthrough I've specifically dedicated myself to primarily using 3 magic schools to do 90% of fights, that being illusion, conjuration, and alteration. I'm avoiding destruction, and using standard physical weapons until later in the game when I can make broken enchanted ones. It's just something different to what I normally do, which is why it's so fun to play. Just gotta get my magicka and spell cost down so that I'm not chugging potions like an alcoholic mid fights 😭

I think you're wrong when it comes to legendary difficulty though. Melee is hard to work in versus magic users.

@@DimitrisVi it can be. Calm an enemy, go into sneak, walk behind the enemy, and one-shot it with a stealth attack. Frenzy spells can cause a whole bandit camp to hack each other to death, leaving a sole survivor for you to deal with however you want. Even the lesser used Rally spells give significant boosts to your party members and they're a must for any support mage kind of build.

@@Hueco-Oscuras I'm a little late but unfortunately armor rating has nothing to do with elemental damage. Doesn't matter if you have 1000 armor or 0, you'll take the same damage. Elemental resistance is only affected by armor enchantments, potions, or a few other sources. It's always percentage based. Just slap the "Resist Magic" enchantment on a few of your equipment and you can face-tank everything.

spell mods went to another level, my favourite is the "raise wall" alteration, literally raises a stone wall in front of you large and tall enough to get 50 m away of your target and blocks all dragon breaths and projectiles

In my Skyrim experience, I rarely use Illusion Magics. Mostly Destruction and Restoration. But indeed Illusion skills are fun. If I may say, in my opinion Destruction Magic is the most broken. I got my Enchanting Skills until can enchant "costs 25% less magicka on Destruction" Learns Thunderbolt, unlock Augmented Shock, Dual Casting, and Impact. I am basically can damages and staggers all targets alike with infinitely extreme prejudice and even works better with Silent Casting on Illusion School.

Definitely build towards lower magicka costs, or find master robes of illusion or something. Can rely less on potions and when you combo this with the bend will shout and master spells, you’ll be untouchable theoretically

is what fireball looks like? YEOUCH! I remember fighting some mage in some dungeon, at point blank range, and my warrior build got killed by it twice before I figured out how to get the bugger without too much effort to adapt, but dang was that fireball powerful!

Replayed Marrowind and Oblivion, can do this in Oblivion pretty early on up to lvl 15 and then at 50 you can do 25, this method with conjuration I have no troubles. if it magically does get hairy just go invis

Then you hit level 30 and your illusion spells never work again. The real sucky thing is that if you get mods so your spells scale up, the game eventually becomes trivially easy as you watch the bad guys fight each other or you just calm all of them. Illusion is only fun early game no matter what you do.

@@hgjgf-d2n not really, there are BARELY any enemies who are above lvl 50, like Nightmaster Vampires (but they get countered by the Necromage perk) And those who do, tend to be unique NPCs like the Ebony Warrior and the random Farmer bringing a cow to a giant's camp.

i reached endgame and decided to max all my magic since ive played this game for like 1000 hours but never did a mage build, ant let me tell you, using magic in skyrim is extremely unrewarding and way too grindy. too many potions unless you are using the resto loop (which i am, so infinite magicka and its still way too slow to win fights). i dont want to make some stupid high power magicka gear that one shots, but i have no idea how youre supposed to do an actual mage build without having 100 potions on a hotkey

The only problem I have with magic is that the damage levels off in the endgame. There's no spell crafting and damage doesn't scale with level, so once you get above level 50 offensive spells become quite weak. You can eventually overcome the magicka costs with the perks or with enchanting gear so you have zero casting cost in a school of magic.

Too much pausing, selecting, switching in mage builds to be fun. It’s just constant flow interruptions. It can be kinda fun if you could set potions you have in inventory to refill your bars automatically when less than required for a spell, if you have them in inventory. It makes zero difference to have it that way and pausing manually. Would change the class completely

if you put potions in favorite you can set an hotkey to use it without going in the menu, if that’s your main problem with mage builds that should probably fix it

@@ReallyFost logical thing to mention, however, the fun part of mage builds is being able to cast powerful spells. As a primarily console gamer with a controller, you want to reserve the favorites for spells, not potions, is all I’m saying. It’s an easy update to add potions to an auto refilling menu, even soul gems assigned to auto refill whatever weapon you have equipped. There should be no reason a player has to pause a game in action. Only a geek developer wouldn’t think to do that to improve the flow of the game. Sitting in a chair and coding is what they’re good at, designing isn’t one of those skills. Even double tapping left or right on the d pad could have brought up more weapon/menu options

I wasn’t completely aware of how favorites work on controller and if you still don’t like it or it doesn’t work that’s fine. I’d like however to do a last proposition, make very strong enchanted gear, it makes it so you don’t need to drink potions, or at the very least much less, the only problem is that it won’t work at the beginning so it might take a bit of a grind leveling enchanting.
