Those trees are called " Toddy Palm" which are quite common in Southern states. The tree produces a intoxicated drink called Toddy (considered healthy) and fruit called ice apple which is a favourite summer fruit in South India.. India-Sri Lanka conflict over Katchatheevu Island Explained: India-Sri Lanka STORY HIGHLIGHTS Katchatheevu is a small uninhabited island in Palk Strait, that connects the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea. It is a disputed territory between Sri Lanka and India, claimed until 1976 by India, and administered by Sri Lanka at the moment. In 1974, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi signed four Maritime Boundary Agreements between 1974-76 with her counterpart Srimavo Bandaranaike, Sri Lankan President, and ceded Katchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka. But, the Tamil Nadu government refuses to accept this agreement and demand retrieval of the island from Sri Lanka. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin demanded at a government function in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Katchatheevu island, now a part of Sri Lanka according to India-Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Agreements between 1974-76, should be retrieved to India so that traditional fishing rights of Tamil fishermen are unaffected. He said, "To solve the important issue faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen, katchatheevu should be retrieved, TN fishermen should be able to exercise their rights in their traditional fishing zones... This is the right time to take action in this regard, I'm duty-bound to remind the Prime Minister (Modi) about this.” The demand to retrieve Katchatheevu has been a long-standing one. But significantly, this time the demand has come up at a time when Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis, with the inflation rate as high as 33.8 per cent in April 2022. Where is Katchatheevu? Katchatheevu is a small uninhabited island in Palk Strait, that connects the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea. It is a disputed territory between Sri Lanka and India, claimed until 1976 by India, and administered by Sri Lanka at the moment. Island’s history Katchatheevu island was formed due to volcanic eruptions in the 14th century. The Raja of Ramnad (present-day Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu) owned Katchatheevu island and it later became a part of the Madras Presidency. In 1921, both Sri Lanka and India claimed this piece of land for fishing and the dispute remained unsettled. The 285-acre land was jointly administered by India and Sri Lanka during British rule. Katchatheevu island issue? Fishermen of both countries have been fishing in each other's waters without conflict for a very long time. The issue emerged when India-Sri Lanka signed maritime boundary agreements. The agreements marked the international maritime boundary of India and Sri Lanka. The agreement aimed to facilitate resource management and law enforcement in the Palk Strait. Now, Indian fishermen were only allowed to use the island for resting, net drying and the annual St. Anthony’s festival. They are not permitted to use the island for fishing. However, Indian fishermen continued trespassing the Sri Lankan water boundary, searching for a better catch in the area. The next few decades went well but the problem turned serious when fish and aquatic life in the Indian continental shelf depleted, which resulted in an increased number of Indian fishermen in the region. They are also using modern fishing trolleys which harm marine life and the ecosystem. During the LTTE (LiberationTigers of Tamil Eelam, a separatist group in Sri Lanka) era, the Sri Lankan government restricted the easy movement of Sri Lankan fishermen in waters raising military operations issues. In 2009, Sri Lanka started heavily guarding its maritime boundary in the Palk Strait. It was done to reduce the possibility of the return of Tamil insurgents to the country. The Indian fishermen considered this an opportunity. But, with the end of the war in 2010, Sri Lankan fishermen again started their movement in Palk Bay and reclaimed their lost legitimate territory. Centre vs state of Tamil Nadu on this issue In 1974, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi signed four Maritime Boundary Agreements between 1974-76 with her counterpart Srimavo Bandaranaike, Sri Lankan President, and ceded Katchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka. In response, in 1991, a resolution was adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly demanding the retrieval of Katchatheevu island through the resolution. In 2008, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa dragged the centre to the Supreme Court and appealed to nullify the Katchatheevu agreements. She stated that two treaties between the countries that gifted Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka are unconstitutional. Humanitarian and Livelihood Concerns About 10 miles northeast of Rameshwaram, the island is used by Indian fishermen to dry their nets, catch fish and rest. Frequent arrests on the border have increased and Sri Lankan authorities said that they are protecting their maritime boundaries against poaching, and securing the livelihood of Sri Lankan fishermen. Both sides ensure to not use force under any circumstances. However, the violent situation remains the same.

The reason is different. Indian Tamils (from Tamilnadu) migrated for Tea plantation in central mountain area of Srilanka during British rule. You can find them in Nuwaralia, Hattan, Badula etc. even today. Indian Tamils grew to 15% of Srilanka's population over a period of 100 years. When Srilanka got independence 1948, both Srilankan Tamils & Sinhalese out of jealousy enacted law and stripped Citizenship for Indian Tamils. Indian Tamils started moving back to Tamilnadu from 1948 onwards. However, large Indian Tamils lived in Srilanka without Citizenship. Senanayaka (1st Srilankan Prisident) requested Nehru to take back Indian Tamils; Nehru rejected saying forceful eviction is inhuman. When Lalbagadur Sasthri became PM in 1964, Sivamoga Bandarika signed Agreement with India and evicted Indian Tamils by Ship from Srilanka & got them settled in Ooty Tea estates. In 1965 Indira Gandhi became PM after Lal Bagadur Shastri died. Srilanka forced 2nd batch of Indian Tamils ; Indira Gandhi rejected & cancelled Srilanka-India agreement. To keep remaining Indian Tamils in Srilanka, Indira Gandhi agreed to gift Katcha theevu. Rest is history

@@amoghavarshanripatunga Srilankan Tamils had been enjoying higher Standard of living and per capita income of Srilanka was 4-5 times higher than Tamilnadu in 1948. More over, the migrated Indian Tamils were landless Scheduled Caste (SC) & Most Backward Community (MBC). Srilankan Tamils are Upper Cast dominated society. Due to richness in Srilanka, Some Indian Tamils migrated illegally into Srilanka before 1948. They were termed as "Kalla thoni" (Illegal immigrant by Boat).

If Srilankan Tamil politicians & people rejected Citizenship Bill in 1948, Indian Tamils would have settled in Srilanka & bred more Children since they were labors. The entire Tamil population in Srilanka would have reached 50:50 by 1980s. Now, Tamilnadu is fully developed vibrant industrialized state & has no poverty. The reason why that katch island was given to srilanka by India..just because of the height of Geo politics that time..at one side..the USA tried their best to make srilanka as an ally..since their b2 base is based on in Diego Garcia which is very near..to srilanka..and tried to operate a base inside srilanka as a detterant to Indian ..on the other side srilanka continue to have close ties with China and Pakistan..this made India furious and acted as a big brother and gifted that island..but with a clause says that the Tamil fishermen have the rights to fish and take rest over there..in the end everything failed..India was furious to know about the double games by srilanka..and started training and supplying various Tamil rebels..ltte was one among them...we just created them to teach a lesson to the little brother..if you do this..this will happen..but too many things went wrong...India has no interest in creating a separate Tamil land..all they care about is to dominate the neighboring nation's..tamils realized that and went on a war with ipkf..past is past..lets forget the past and spread love not war..the sad part is the people forget about the govt established and developed many institutions like bhel..Bel..Hal..iiT..and lot more..and blindly support some political party in the name of religion..now India is surrounded by enemies including Bangladesh and Nepal..China took away thousands of miles..people keep supporting them ..just because of the saviours of the religion..as if like the previous government was run by a minority..
