I think the rigid caste system of social discrimination is dragging the country but our country cannot afford to underutilize its academic capacities in the premiere institutions due to drop outs. Reservation for the economically weaker section (encompassing all castes) and financial assistance to the socially discriminated castes can give desired results at the earliest.

My dear friend, Reservation is not caste based since beginning. Reservations is based on discriminations, underrepresentaion, injustice and persecution. Only in EWS reservation their is caste based reservation by removing ST, SC from it, though they are mostly poor! Reservation is not given by anybody but given by Constitution. If you want SC, ST beneficiary give up their reservation, 1st give up all upper caste privilege, and give up all lands, inherent money, that is captured by upper caste from thousands of year for lower caste.... Just to accept fate and suffer? Does those people deserve to suffer by not able to get govt jobs even though they are as skilled as an st/sc person? Yes, i acknowledge still its not the right time to change things, but someday it must change because sc/st wont suffer forever and situation is getting better day by day. Also reservation should be based on rich and poor by helping poor financially. Providing jobs is the most ridiculous thing for those that performed less efficient, it would be a job given out of mercy by the govt. Also im very sorry for using the word "less efficient" as it maybe the not right term, i acknowledge the historical suffering of st/sc caste, i feel they deserve to get such reservations and it will help them a lot, but in the long run, its not viable and i hope things will change in 50 years or so.
