It's not about having to upgrade, it's the fact that the game doesn't give you the option to turn RT off which is honestly "kinda cringe" and anti-consumer. All it does is artificially make it so non RT cards can't run it, even when they would have been more than capable of doing so. AMD for example have a bunch of recent cards such as the RX 7800 that are pretty beefy, but don't support RT features, this is a card that came out a year ago, and it's unable to play this game and potentially a bunch of others if this disgusting trend catches on.

To me, this game really exposes why the GPU market sucks so hard right now. Basically, games like this (and to a lesser extent Alan Wake 2) are really showing why it's (still) important to buy a GPU with the most up-to-date feature set if you want to have something that will really last a good long time into the future. The fact that a 2060 Super can still run titles using the most modern rendering tech, while the RX 5700 XT (which was its direct price competitor) simply cannot, is a perfect example of this. The 5700 XT was a bit faster at the time it released, but because of the feature set, the 2060 Super was the more "future-proof" card in the long run. But at the same time, games like this also expose how important it is to get a card with a lot of VRAM overhead if you want it to last. And now we're in a situation where you can't get both an acceptable amount of VRAM overhead AND the most modern feature set without paying over $700. AMD gives you enough VRAM but its core performance in RT titles is just not good enough, while Nvidia is just lol with their absurd VRAM stinginess. As somebody who is still rocking a 2070 Super, the minimum upgrade that makes any sense to me would be a 4070 ti Super, because it's the cheapest card with both enough VRAM and a future-looking feature set/RT performance. If you'd asked me back when I bought my 2070S (at its launch) I would have never guessed that in 5 1/2 years time I would need to pay nearly $800 to get something that was a worthwhile upgrade. I'm really, really hoping that AMD closes the gap with Nvidia in RT performance with the 8000 series. Like, I know that they're not shooting for the high end with this series, but that's fine, I want a midrange card anyway. I just want the $500 AMD card to give me RT performance that's competitive with the $500 Nvidia card.
@64-9614 сағат бұрын
While I agree that AMD's RT performance leaves a lot to be desired, I also think most games just slap the feature over the top of a traditional raster pipeline without much consideration for performance. Games like Indiana Jones. Metro Exodus (the RT re-release) and Avatar, especially the latter- which isn't brought up in these discussions enough -prove without a shadow of a doubt that RT can be a great help to the development of a game, look spectacular and make a meaningful difference in the quality of visuals, and RUN GREAT with fantastic optimisation even on AMD's RDNA2 GPUs like the RX 6800 XT. Even RE Village for example uses extremely performant RTGI which makes a meaningful difference to visual quality, whilst performing very well for all GPUs. It just seems that for RT features, the focus is all in the wrong place- it's focused too much on impressing people, rather than what it's supposed to be, a better solution than traditional global illumination, shadows, etc that can produce better results much easier, and streamlining the development process. When games are built with it as a core part of the development like Avatar, Indiana Jones and Metro Exodus, they just happen to run extremely well? That's not a coincidence. All the games so far that were developed like that run well because they aren't just focused on showing off. On the other hand, we have games that are just RT "showcases", which perform awful even on a 4090 and require DLSS framegeneration to even be acceptable on the most expensive hardware available.

Ok but at some point games like this had to start coming out because this is very much a large part of the point of hardware support for ray tracing. The fact that it's so commonplace now means that developers can lean on it to make better games with less restricted cinematography and more resources put into other things because they don't have to spend ages faking lighting. It sucks that that means some people can't play the game but it would suck more if we couldn't have had the game (at the same quality level because resources that went into making a great game would've had to be put instead into all the work that rasterised lighting requires).

To put it into future perspective, as hardware becomes more and more developed in the RT department, eventually ray tracing and path tracing will become more optimized and be far easier to run - it will be to future hardware as performant as rasterized solutions are to current hardware now. This is a necessary step in that direction, even if it means a lower frame rate threshold on current generation hardware, progress doesn't happen without some initial growing pains. finally, i've repeated this stuff in the comments of many videos but many people seem to know nothing about hardware. The reality is that 99.9% of those who complain about this game don't want to admit (or don't understand) that their gpu is really obsolete. For the record, almost all of the 50 most used gpu (not considering the integrated ones) support hardware raytracing and allow you to play this game well, regardless of how old they are. The only "absurd" thing is the use of vram which limits many nvidia gpu, no big deal anyway since even with medium or high textures the texture pool is more than sufficient.

If you thought hardware based RT requirements weren't coming for games, you were mistaken. The entire point of RT has been to replace prebaked lighting/shadows, SSR, and SSAO. A 16gb RTX 3060 in nearly 2025 is not an expensive card anymore. If you're a budget gamer, you'll be fine with 2nd gen RT cores.

The two games to my knowledge that have required RT capable systems (Indiana Jones and Metro Exodus Enhanced) are both unsurprisingly the two games where the ray traced lighting really makes a big difference in lighting accuracy and immersion, while still running good. Ray tracing is great and is not a gimmick. There's so many games where it is half heartedly implemented with RT shadows or RT reflections paired with traditional lighting techniques. The end result is an image that is slightly more accurate (but barely noticeable) with a 20-30% reduction in performance... With Indiana Jones, the graphics arent that good, not terrible, but not all that great, but the RTGI totally transforms the presentation and makes it so much more immersive and beautiful.

Also inevitable is the whining from people with aging hardware. I doubt it. Sometimes even regular Ray Tracing is difficult for them to add while keeping a decent fps/res. F1 is just not a very demanding game. It's a last gen game essentially with added RT... It's an easy game to run on PC But it's not full Ray Tracing because they're missing RT for Shadows. Sometimes Pro has to use lower than the lowest PC settings of RT. It's possible but it'll only be on highly optimized/less graphically impressive games like the 2 you mentioned.

I have a 3080 10GB and as long as I keep the textures around medium, I'm getting well over 60 fps at 1440P with many other settings set to high. Looks amazing and plays great. I had no expectations of this game and only downloaded it since it's on PC Gamepass. Nvidia really nerfed the original 3080 as it has the horsepower to run pretty much all modern games at 1440P high settings but the Vram is holding it back from its full potential. I'm conflicted on forcing RT as in this game, it does look great and runs pretty ok, but I feel bad for the majority of gamers who still don't have an RT capable GPU. That said, to play devil's advocate, we are heading into the 4th gen of RT capable cards and the devs can't wait forever to push the industry forward with making RT implementations standard. I'm all for HWRT becoming the standard. It's been over 6 years and 4 generations since HWRT launched on PC, and almost 4 years since consoles had it; even my school laptop's integrated graphics support it (it's not very playable, but neither are most traditional raster games tbf). Standardizing HWRT for lighting would go a long way towards simplifying the lighting pipeline, which I expect to grant better performance and maintainability. I bet UE5 ditching SW Lumen and investing those resources into HW Lumen might speed that up, too, though Epic probably wouldn't do that as it would eat into Fortnite's existing playerbase (as if migrating to UE5 didn't already do that). Plus nearly all GPUs with HWRT have mesh shader support as far as I'm aware, so if you want to use those while you're at it, you're probably home free. My main concerns are twofold: VRAM requirements, and pricing. We need to keep VRAM requirements under control. We still have 8GB cards around, and if we can't ship to, say, a 4060 Ti, then it just muddies the waters on supported hardware and makes everyone's lives harder for no good reason (players and developers alike). Definitely seems like investing in an aggressive memory streaming solution is a good idea (as bad a rep as Unreal gets, something like their virtual textures seems like a step in the right direction), so I'll keep that in mind when working on my pet project game engine. Pricing also needs to be considered. There are legitimate reasons people are still using pre-HWRT hardware (think 10 series, 1080 Ti my beloved) and legitimate reasons to not upgrade. In some countries new hardware is crazy expensive, or maybe they don't have the money, or maybe they do have the money and choose to spend it on things they deem more important... all kinds of reasons to take into account. I'm not super worried because my engine is probably not going to ship games for a few years (it's a learning and resume project right now), but I can see why I would be worried if you're, say, Epic (going back to them), who needs Fortnite to run on a lot of machines.

Thank you for the correct messaging here. Today's gamers don't seem to be aware that these requirements are generous: you need at least a 6 year old NVIDIA card or 4 year old AMD card. Last gen APUs can run this game, as can the ASUS ROG Strix mobile platform, as well as the Steam Deck. Games need to evolve, and this always happens, like when hardware rendering became a requirement in the 90s, or when pixel shaders became a requirement in the early 2000s, and those were a lot less forgiving in their minimum requirements than this game! This is only a good thing. It's about time the industry started pushing games that actually take advantage of high end hardware, because they haven't for a very long time other than a few outliers. We used to get that somewhat on the regular way back in the day. This is normal, or it used to be. We also need to do a hard push for RT right now, at the later half of this generation, so that it should be expected in almost every game next generation, and at 60 fps. Extensive use of RT, especially PT, will be the biggest, and easiest, way to make games look 'next gen' during the next gen. As long as the hardware is there, there isn't a whole lot of work compared to having to bake everything out and strategically place lights to fake things. This is the way.

I don't agree, but it's mostly because i'm more interested in getting a game running well than getting it running well on the latest hardware, i don't understand how we can simultaneously praise a technology like DLSS for getting people more frames while praising something that demands people spend hundreds potentially thousands on new hardware, people did that for hallmark games like Crysis, not lighting. On the dev side sure, rendering lighting is a heavy process and on the fly RT makes it easier for devs during the art phase of development but i see two problems, we're passing more of the art of lighting to technology than the artist leading to similar looking games, and AAA has a quality problem, maybe not with Indiana Jones but passing a lack of optimisation onto the player has never been cool and still isn't cool.

Bro, why did you think people did that for Crysis if not graphics?
@cikame15 сағат бұрын
@@SilverEye91 People bought hardware for Crysis because of the whole package, but most people can't tell the difference between RT and non RT side by side.

The part about passing the art of lighting to technology is ridiculous, especially in regards to this game, that takes a lot of creative liberties when it comes to its lighting, trying to mimic the look of the movies. The dynamic lighting is what makes this possible in the first place.

It's understandable, but I think the reason why there is so much controversy this time with this sort of thing is that in many places including here in Australia, GPUs (and CPUs o a lesser extent) are still wildly overpriced ever since Covid. That combined with VRAM concerns of entry level GPUs from NVIDIA being considered poor value, it is completely understandable at this current time why this is so controversial and an issue for a lot of people, because the GPU market is still absolutely absurd right now. Many people that used to upgrade every 3 years or so now find themselves waiting 5 years or more, if ever. Even for me before Covid I couldn't afford to upgrade for about 10 years, and one of the upgrades before that was from a friend for a second hand entry level GPU and gave me a friend discount. This being controversial with the current state of the market is absolutely understandable.

disabling ray tracing in settings and the game looks great and runs better, I don't understand why you want these crap settings enabled

we need sli again and cards only taking up 2 slots then we wouldn't have to rely on using upscaling and dlss or at least pure raw performance increase for gaming bruteforce

I'm sure DF has brought this up a few times before but not as much as they should: RT and eventually PT exist to benefit game developers and rendering artists first and foremost to streamline lighting workflows, not for gamers to experience better graphics. That's OK but we still need to temper our expectations with this reality. IdTech 7 along with MachineGames kick ass in optimisation as usual and thus 'deserve' to mandate RT (gently) to gamers while other engines and devs are still playing catch up.

It's just stupid. You can literally see zero difference with RT on. Forbidden West isn't RT. Yet? It looks like it has better lighting than any game I've seen. Back when I'd do the comparisons in Cyberpunk, on my day one 6900XT? All RT did was make the perfectly dry cement shiny and and wet looking and put wee little shadow outlines around random objects, like garbage bags, steps and some parts of my gun. For awhile, I just called it the "Borderlands effect" since all it did was put black outlines lol But? Other than a little dark outline, or shiny cement? Zero difference.

You are right. Installed and played Metro Exodus EE and the original on my 3060ti.....and all I saw was a "different" BRIGHTER look to the original. It's definitely different....but not "game changing". NV, their marketing arm i.e DF/ShillUp etc and the unpaid internet shills/fanboys want to upsell their already ridiculously priced gfx cards to the others who just won't bend down. RT in its current implementation is just not worth it to spend 700$+ for their "game changing" visuals. Prices are definitely not coming down in the future...so it would be interesting to see how this pans out.

Forbidden west has better lighting than any game you've ever seen? yeah you need to play more games, one of the mediocre graphical aspects of Forbidden West was its Global illumination, also Cyberpunk RT barely makes any difference? yeah....Someone needs to get their eyes checked or are you just coping because even basic RT in that game makes your 6900xt choke
