When I was a teenager I was told a friend of a friend (someone I knew and talked to often but I never asked him about this) worked for an importation company. The company often handled high value goods. Well this friend of a friend found an opportunity to discretely pocket a gold and diamond necklace worth over a million dollars. I don't recall the exact value, also you'd think places like that would have metal detectors, but they didn't explain that. I was told he hid the necklace in an old hollow tree in the woods near his house. He was going to wait for the statute of limitations to run out and then try and sell it. Indeed he seemed like the kind of guy who might do something like that. Anyway, some years went by and my friend of a friend was tragically killed in a car accident. I hadn't thought about the story or the necklace at the time. Someone dying at such a young age was so tragic. More years later one of my kids was asking tons of questions about gold when something he said reminded me of the story of the friend of the friend. I told him the story and only at the end of the story did I remember that he was the same guy who was killed in a car accident, and he hadn't told anyone where he stashed the necklace, except that it was in an old hollow tree in the woods. Some Indiana Jones in the future is going to be really happy when they stumble on that one.

I hear the ghost of Archimedes 👏 Ancient Colombian artists created hollow objects, for example flasks and containers. Great skill was needed to produce them. The figure was modeled in clay and charcoal, and a thin layer of wax was applied to cover the final result. Over this another layer of clay would be added, and wooden pegs were inserted to fix the inner mold to the outer one to keep them in place when the wax melted. Controlling the flow of the metal to every single detail of the piece, its slow solidification, and then freeing the figure without damaging it was challenge that could only be achieved by the most experienced hands.

Very interesting, Nate, and extremely entertaining. I always wondered if the idol of the Chachapoyas was made hollow, but of Electrum, a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver.

Being hollow also increases the difficulty in estimating the weight of the idol for doing exactly what Indy tried to do to fool the traps. If so, Indy probably had to do a ton of research just to understand how close the sand had to be in weight... and still got it wrong.

Nate knows this, because he’s worked in a place that casts statues if I’m not mistaken, but usually metal statues and statuettes are hollow at the bottom. As they said, it could be a thin shell. This also isn’t just the case in modern times, people have made hollow statues for ages. It doesn’t necessarily have to get crushed as easily as they say. Everyone who works with gold usually makes an alloy with copper out of it to make it a lot less malleable. I do have to say, this is a great video to show something I’ve always wondered about.

I can attest to how heavy a gold bar is as an armored car guard one of my customers was a jewelry manufacture and we routinely brought then individual bars of gold. And for such a reletivley small size its weight was incredible. You don't just simply pick it up and carry it around. You have to be calculated with your movements. If the gold bar and your hand/fingers hit anything they are done for.

One movie (That I have seen) that portrays the weight of gold fairly accurately, is Die Hard 3. (Die Hard With A Vengeance) When John and Zeus are in the vault, John kicks a bar of gold left behind by Simons goons. Zeus picks it up, and is shown struggling with it. He is seen to be bearing a lot of weight when he uses it to break the window of a Yugo. And lastly, when he puts it onto the back seat of the Yugo, the seat compresses under that weight. The movie also shows Simons goons loading the gold with small skid-steer loaders. When scooping the stacks of gold bars (from the vaults of the Federal Reserve in NYC) it is also shown that the loaders meet very dense piles. Actually a gold-aluminum alloy would not only make sense, but would be historically even more precious. Until recently Aluminum was the most precious of metals (even more expensive than platinum) due to difficulty of obtaining it. Only after a method of obtaining aluminum from bauxite was invented, this metal price dropped significantly becoming the cheapest metal there is.

The Bank of England museum in London used to have a perspex pyramid you could put your hand in and lift a bar of gold. It had a lot of security around it, but for all I know could have been tungsten instead. Was still fun to try, and made me realise all those heist movies with people running around with bars of gold weren't exactly realistic.

Re: Jumping with heavy things. While jumping and carrying a thing is obviously more difficult, there is a technique that allows you to actually jump further, albeit at the cost of said thing. Take a running start while carrying it, then as you're pushing off for the jump, thrown that thing down as hard as you can. Something something Newton's Third law, so you will gain a small advantage, maybe 5-10% higher/longer jump. As a side note, neat channel logo on the wall at the end!

If we are question why it was so light. Good shell around a wood/stone body. The shell could easilly be pounded into shape over the body. Thus saving quite a lot of weight. And it could then maintain its form, through all the rough running and jumps. Problem solved.

Years ago I was at a museum and they had a display of a “gold” bullion bar. It was a facsimile of a standard size bar , but they had a cable hooked up to an appropriate weight through a hole in the table. You couldn’t lift it!

If I am not wrong, Dr. Jones had the weight wrong thats why the idol's base retracted inside & the place started to fall apart. The not being able to run with all that weight makes sense.

A quicker way to measure the volume would be to fill a container to the very top, and put it inside a larger, empty container. Push the model inside so the water spills out from the sides into the larger container and you have the volume of water displaced.

As to the composition of the statue, I would assume the Dr Jones would have some extensive knowledge regarding the idol, as that was his field of study. But as none of that was shared with the audience, well, that just leaves it wide open to Indy falling down the pit while stuck full of poison darts. LOL Great video!!

Easier way to find volume of object. Water in a vessel that is full to the brim, water cant be added with spilling, very slowly submerge item and water will be displaced/spill because of object. You can then weigh the vessel before and after item and easy to calculate after that once you subtract vessel weight

I hate to be that guy (I watched the whole trilogy with my dad at Christmas... YES I SAID TRILOGY!!!! THERE IS NO 4th MOVIE) when the jump took place Indy didn't have the Idol he gave it to Satipo (Alfred Molina) in exchange for the whip, but he did get it back before the boulder scene though
