Well said. Great video. This competition is wonderful. I was wondering if you could please consider answering this question: For white authors entering the Best Australian yarn, who want to write stories containing Indigenous Australian characters... (Obviously they would NOT enter the Indigenous category, they would just enter the general category)... But... For a white Australian writing a story that includes Indigenous characters... Is this helpful or harmful to Indigenous Australians? Or neutral? (Assuming they do their research and don't perpetuate harmful stereotypes). Do you have any stance or advice for this? Does your stance change depending on whether the Indigenous character is the main character or supporting character? Or how many Indigenous characters there are? What about the characters being in locations and learning about the Indigenous history of that location? And does your stance change depending on whether or not racism is talked about in the story… vs a story where the character is Indigenous, but racism isn't mentioned in the story at all. I'm white and I want to include an Indigenous Australian supporting character (not a main character). I want to pay an Indigenous Australian to read my story and make sure that I'm not enforcing any bad stereotypes or being culturally insensitive or anything like that. They'd be like a sensitivity reader. If I do this, will I still be eligible to enter? Because I know that The Best Australian Yarn has a strict rule that the stories can be written by only 1 author and cannot be a collaboration. Would hiring an Indigenous Australian sensitivity reader, would that count as a collaboration and therefore make my entry ineligible for the competition?
