Hey guys, Let me know how you are (or planning) to stream music in your home audio systems and click the Like button on the video. When it reached 2k likes, I will either get Ifi to give away a unit OR buy it myself to give it away. Ifi zen stream: shop-links.co/chhYcdnHIDx Innuos zen mini mk3: innuos.com/zen_mini_mk3/ (local dealer only)

One year ago I've chose Innuos Zen Mini MK3 as my digital transport because it was the best option available for my needs: CD ripper, music storage (I have over 1000 album bought from Bandcamp), quality of sound and Roon Core. Short after I've bought it Innuos released InnuOS 2 operation system. It changed my approach to my digital music: I really don't need anymore Roon, InnuOS 2.0 can do by itself everything I need. I've overcome the problem of distance of Zen Mini form my Router with a little WiFi relay which has an ethernet exit. To my needs the Zen Mini has everything I need with the InnuOS 2.0 operating system. I totally get your point: everyone of us has his own priorities and the connectivity side of the Innuos can be fiddling in situations like the ones you described and Ifi connectivity is so much more easy both on hardware and software side. My needs are quality of sound ( for this reason I use the separate LPSU on the Zen Mini), easy and stressless CD ripping, access for the whole family to the system (you can do that with Innuos Sense app). Innuos is going to release InnuOS 2.1 which will improve many functions and I've added many plugins to my Zen Mini using the LMS based system. Have you tried the last thing? You obviously need a Logitech Media Server Account. Then you can simply add ":9000" to the IP address of your Innuos Zen Mini and add many useful plugins to it. Anyway Jay, whatever you choose you won't regret it: two great products, no need to puzzling. What comes first for you is the most important thing. If you need help with the LMS thing just drop me a line, I'd be happy to help. Thank you for sharing. PS. If you want to stream from Tidal app to Zen Mini and you have an Android phone please check on Google for "LMS_Connect" app. It will do the trick for you and from another free app like Squeezer you can control the music you're playing. Both free and stable apps.

Ever Since I got a Zen Stream, I bought an audioquest diamond usb cable, ifi zen elite power supply, Bonn N8 audio switch, audioquest votka ethernet cable from the switch to the zen switch, then finally, a Ferrum Linear power supply. every step the Zen stream responded with a positive improvement.

So. I originally had a Bluesound node 2i as in all in one as I ventured back into two channel audio. Then, on Jay's recommendation of the SMSL vmd1SE, I purchased it. A very worthwhile upgrade. However, about 8 months ago as other reviewers raved about this Ifi Stream, I decided to grab one off Amazon as it was a risk free. Wow, it SMOKED the node as a streamer. What a combo for the money. NOW, on one of the Ifi Facebook pages, others recommended upgrading the power supply, specifically the Ifi Power X. Sells for $109. So I grabbed it from Amazon again. No overblown exaggeration, nothing overkill about what I'm going to say: The unit with the stock power supply is MAYBE 40% (at the most) of the overall sound quality using the upgrading power supply. So much so, I let my brother try the entire ensemble at his house to ensure I wasn't crazy. Same conclusion. Jay, for giggles, grab that power supply and try it. I think your head will spin!

I'm thinking about upgrading from the node 2i so thank you for the vid! I don't love the look of iFi Zen but it's small enough to be hidden behind my rack. As far as how manufacturers can make streamers better my answer is software response time for sure! Click play and the song should play right away and playback must be gapless.

I was using the BlueSound Node prior to that but as you say the Stream sounds much better (I use DAC Topping D90SE, toon will try a new SMSL D400EX). Glad to learn the Innuos can be a Roon core. Keep up the good work, I appreciate your common sense approach to Ifi.

The NODE’s OS is rock solid, as is Tidal Connect. I’m using the NODE with an upgraded internal power supply and sBooster linear power supply. Usability is intact but the sound quality is improved. This makes more sense to me than a costlier Lumin transport (switching power supply, paying a lot more for a fancy enclosure), etc. Just my own experience and this only applies to transport duties (external DAC).

I’ve had my iFi stream for about a month now and absolutely love it. I really struggled with Tidal which often glitched on me (I was using chromecast to stream) now using Tidal connect I can use my iPhone as a “remote” and best of all it plays gapless. The other benefits are I get to use my old benchmark dac1 through coax. Even more importantly I can finally stream downstairs in my dedicated music room using Wi-Fi ( I don’t have Ethernet in that room). So all in all a great product.

Great review! It should be noted that this is a transport, not necessarily a true "streamer" with a built-in dac and subsequent analog out. iFi specifically calls this a wifi audio transport. Perhaps potato/potatoe here, but worth calling out for those who think they won't need anything else to make the iFi stream deliver an analog output, unlike the Innuos and Bluesound in comparision which have built-in dacs.

I see where you are coming from but I would say the Bluesound is a streaming DAC whereas the iFi is just a streamer. I've got an Auralic Aries G2 and always think of it as a streamer even though it has no DAC. Pure semantics, however, and you are right to warn folks who may get confused about what they need. I guess you could also call the iFi a network bridge, although maybe the fact that it natively streams stuff via it's own app makes it more than a bridge. Now I'm confused..

Hi Jay, I am surprised you didn't talk about the Innuos Sense app and is a stand-alone player with integration to both Tidal and Qobuz. It sounds much much better than streaming Roon via Innuos in every aspect. To take it a step further, you should set the latency to 'low' and if you have files stored on the local hard drive you can turn off most of the wifi circuit in the settings and engage 'offline mode' for the critical listening sessions. Then the sound quality is very good, I doubt the IFI zen would come anywhere close to Sense App playing instead of Roon. Yes I know that Roon is great in the user-friendly aspect and discovering new music and such, but through Innuos at least, there is no comparison regarding how much better the Sense sounds compared to Roon.

For years ive been searching for a dedicated streamer. Most have built in pre amps, dacs and are not balanced. So when the ifi zen streamer came out. I was so excited because it is the closes I was looking for in a streamer. The drawbacks I have is that I know nothing about room or rasberry pie. The level of complexity gives me a headache. The only time I listen to my pc connected to my system is when I play my downloaded dsd albums. Other then that im a physical meadia type of person. Any time ive done any type streaming is through an app on my phone. I connect my phone to my external dac with a type c to usb b cable. Been using that method for awhile now. The quality is pretty good for what it is. Finding it hard to justify the headache of a streamer when the streamer in my phone works just as good as long as I use a decent external dac with usb connection.

Interesting video and great you highlight people do not need to spend multiple thousands of dollars these days to get a good streamer (better to spend it on the Dac). My favourite streamer is the Mano Ultra MkII which has Femto clocks, i2s output, low noise internal Class A LPSU, Furutech IEC inlet, all for 995 Euro. Wifi is a 30 Euro optional extra.

I HAD the iFi Zen Streamer, but had terrible issues with WiFi which was my only convenient connection. However, this was months ago so maybe the upgraded software has made a difference. I will say the sound quality was greatly improved compared to my Raspberry Pi going into my Schiit Bifrost 2i. However, the sound is still impressive out of the Pi by using a better iFi power supply with a iPurifier3! Cheers

iFi’s Achilles heel is its network connection. It took me a long time to resolve the issue. At first I was using a wireless Ethernet bridge to connect via hardwired connection. About 80% of the time, ZS cannot be seen on either Spotify or Tidal connect. When I was on Wifi, my network protocol was to have hidden SSID, and that was also causing numerous issues. However, once I changed the wifi protocol to show wifi network and connected that way, it has been way more consistent. So I would say if you are able to circumvent the network issue, the unit is working great and convenient. For a “Roon like” experience, for those that have a NAS set up, I just use Plex client on your NAS device and it would also work decent enough. But keep in mind it cannot do audio quality above 16/44.1. As of now, I have disconnected my Mac Mini and a monitor and using iFi exclusively for streaming and has worked out well. Good luck to those that may encounter connection issues.

I use the iFi Zen Streamer with Macs running Audirvana Studio and Qobuz and Apple Music as sources. In the now rare occasion that I need to play CDs, they can be played from one of the Macs either directly or after they are ripped to a file. Audirvana allows access to music on the Macs and on Qobuz within the same interface. Audirvana also has an iPhone app that allows you to control a Mac that is running Audirvana Studio. iPhones can also stream to the iFi Zen directly by just selecting it in the wifi setting. Audirvana Studio allows you to stream a large selection of International Internet music and radio sources. Also, I agree with Mark's comment, just use the All-In-One setting.

I almost bought the iFi Zen Stream, I would love to try one, seems like people love it. I ended up buying a PecanPi Streamer. I am ok with the stability and less noise connecting via network cable. I use Tidal Connect/Volumio. Can also do Roon, PiCore, Moode.. has S/PDIF, can use a USB to S/DIF converter for DAC. Can connect a USB CD drive to rip disks. Can connect a Bluetooth device on S/PDIF.. Mine also has 2x XLR Outputs and 1xRCA Output. Connected straight to a Power Amplifier for best sound. Volume Control on PecanPi streamer too

Jay could possibly answer that. I think they would be very comparable in SQ, the PecanPi has great sound quality. You can connect Hard Drives, NAS, USB drive too. Can use Airppay as well. And if you want wifi, can hook up a Wifi Link to it, see Orchard Audio for more details. Overall, quite happy, still has the odd glitch, think it’s a Volumio issue.

I cheaped out and went with the Andover Songbird. Normally $180 but on sale for $99 U.S. 24 bit/ 192 hz built-in dac. Compatible with most streaming services. I use Tidal. The only problems I have are it's not gapless streaming, and the Songbird app disconnects sometimes when I want to change artists or albums. Maybe it's an issue with Android...not sure if iphone users experience this problem. Generally it works great with my WiFi. However you need a router with split band capabilities. It requires 2.5g to operate. I use 5g on my other devices. It has lan and Bluetooth connections too. Simple to use and easily connects to optical and RCA. Great option on a budget. The sound is impressive for the cost. I may give it to my son and upgrade to the ifi.

You do not have to switch between the Tidal or Roon setting on the selection screw. Just set it to AIO (all in one) and all modes are available together. The reason for having the options is sound quality is supposed to be superior in “exclusive mode”. As I understand it, the Zen turns off the redundant options so there is less “interference, like a Pure Direct mode on an amp or receiver, as I understand it. I have had one of these since their release and for me it has been the beat value addition to my system. It replaced a Microsoft Surface connected to my DAC, the improvement was marked and operation much easier. I have read about some problems with this streamer but personally never had any in setup or operation. Keep up the good work I enjoy your reviews and take on equipment.

I replaced my Node 2i (modded with power supply interface) with the Stack Audio streamer from England. Big obvious sound quality upgrade. Bubble upnp software not as slick as the Bluesound, but worth it in sound quality improvement. They say that all internal clocks in the streamer are synced to diminish jitter. I use wifi and exclusively use it to listen to qobuz. It comes with its own substantial linear power supply, which I think makes a difference as well. But more expensive at around $1300.

Differentiating factor for node: hdmi e-arc. My priority for my new system is simplicity - my ethos is: the fewer barriers/steps required to listen to the system, the more I (and my partner/visitors) will use it and the more gross enjoyment it will reap 🤷‍♂ I'm tossing up between getting a super integrated with streaming built in (i.e. NAD C399/lyngdorf/sexy new Yamaha R-N2000A), vs choosing my own components and using ifi/node for streaming. The pull towards the all-in-one solution is simplicity - control everything through my phone for listening (tidal/spotify connect, so anyone can control it) and my TV remote for watching via hdmi arc. I haven't fully worked it all out, but I think I can still achieve this with separates (even just an integrated with separate streamer / dac / phono), but the nodes hdmi in is critical for that simple TV integration. Any thoughts and advice on this appreciated. Is that level of "m10" / lyngdorf 1120" simplicity achievable with separate components?

If your streaming is not sounding better than other sources, you have work to do, if you care about it. Fiber with Finisar SFPs, audio switches in cascade, external LPSUs and clocks, and decent cabling. Then streaming will be as good as a high end transport.

This was exactly my experience. Paying attention to streaming signal hygiene can make the quality as good or better than cd/vinyl. Ethernet through a good switch (etherregen) and external clock (after dark) can make a world of difference to what’s delivered to your streamer and Dac. The cost (1200) was cheaper than trying to upgrade the streamer and dac and likely better.✌️

I've only had the CXN2 a couple weeks and I'm not sure if I'm totally sold on it. It does sound pretty decent overall and it is convenient. Ultimately I think what I really want is a ROON core so I can reap all the benefits ROON has to offer. This IFI unit seems pretty good, I'm not concerned with CD ripping, just want a streamer that will be ROON ready for the future of getting a CORE and good sound quality...for under 1k.

I would get an intel nuc and build roon rock and use it as the roon core, will probably cost $500CAD. As for CD ripping buy a $10 drive and plug it into roon rock, it can rip CDs too!

For anyone looking to get an iFi Zen Stream, factor in getting a power supply upgrade. Like other comments here who upgraded the power supply, the difference is no joke. iFi should really include a drop down when adding to cart to add a power supply upgrade. I picked up the iFi Power Elite. I was dubious that I'd be able to tell a difference, but the change was profound-so much so that I realized I was blaming the shortcomings of my system to other components, when it was the Zen Stream with the included power supply that was holding it back. I think a good way of putting it is iFi priced the Zen Stream to make it accessible to more people who want to get onto streaming, but for sound quality, the included power supply just doesn't cut it-upgrading is mandatory.

I would love to buy something like the new Bluesound Node since I love the BluOS app, along with the HDMI input and other features. The only problem is that the iFi iStream just sounds better. I hate how it looks, and it was a bit glitchy at first, but especially for Tidal, it just sounds great.

Nice video. If the usage is mainly Tidal Connect, you can also explore Wiim Mini. It's a 99$ device with excellent no fuss design. Of course there are few limitation: (1) it only output spdif, no usb out. Apart from line out (2) it is only 24/192 output max (3) mqa and gapless not there (4) haven't done a/b with ZS so can't comment on the sound quality. But with all the limitation, still imo it is a great alternative mainly due to its price, form factor and a superb no-fuss connectivity.

You’re asking the right questions and keeping the focus tight; very well done piece in my opinion. I’m just getting started with streaming and bought a used Auralic Aries ‘network bridge,’ because, in part, I thought, ‘all I need is an external DAC to start streaming,’ which is, in fact, true. But I’m discovering there is quite a bit more involved on the digital side if you want a fully functional system (ripping CD’s, music library of downloaded and ripped digital files, metadata, etc). I looked longingly at the all-in-one offerings of Innuous and others, but hard-wired CAT5/6 cabling is an issue for me. Like you, my router is in another room (same floor). The wireless link for the ‘network bridge’ / player / endpoint / whatever works flawlessly for me. Auralic recommends the wireless connection as a strategy to avoid EMI/RFI noise. The main reason I’m still interested in purchasing a streamer (in addition to the player I have now) is because I need the ‘core’ function, and I don’t want to use a standard PC computer to serve in that role. $1,400 for the Innuous product you mentioned seems like a bargain to me, when other products in the category are bumping $4,000 (including units from the aforementioned Innuous). I’m not yet a Roon user, Auralic’s Lightening app meets my needs right now; but I’m leaning that way, especially if I can still purchase a ‘lifetime’ subscription. Anyway, that is my ‘brief but spectacular’ response to your very useful video.

What you on about Jay? I've Roon sitting across 2 laptops and 2 phones. A visitor just has to click into either of the laptops that have the Roon interface and choose whatever they want to play. No passwords or inconvenience at all. And as far as the ifi goes, it's FAR easier to use the Roon interface for Tidal than it is to use Tidal's interface. Also. Yes, you can cast straight from Tidal, but why would you when you can do the same from Roon ( and get Qobuz etc into the bargain)? The Ifi is a good wee device, but the other streamer I have, a Pro-ject Stream Box S2 Ultra provides much. much better sound quality. Yes, it's a bit more costly than the Ifi, but that sound difference plus the ability to rip CDs is well worth the extra few hundred bucks. Anyway....

Thank you for the review! I’ve been using the Zen stream for 4-5 months and i have been experiencing problems with the USB connection with a memory key for storing music files. Whenever the zen is powered down it loses connection to the key. Only solution is to physically disconnect and reconnect the key. I contacted manufacturer and they said a fix is in works. But still wating for nearly six months

I’m adding that you should keep the innuos for two main reasons 1 ) for cd ripping that keeps you away from cluster 2) for you being a roon player I don’t think you should negotiate the sound quality if you already had it. Maybe buy a separate tablet for the innuos for convenience.

Earlier this year when I decided to get a streamer I cheap out and got the Wiim mini to connect it to the integrated amp. After I bought it I realized that I wanted to stream also when listening to headphones and realized that on my zen dac and zen can I hadn't got an optical in. So....I bought the zen one signature dac wich has optical input. So in the end I ended up spending more than if I would opted for the Zen stream to use it with the Zen dac through usb. At least I ended up with a better dac that zen V1.😄 I make the stupidest choices in audio shoping ever. You should keep the zen stream just for convenience.

I really wanted to like the Zen streamer but I had too many consistent dropouts with wifi. It could have been that the router is upstairs from where I was streaming, but still. It would have been nice if the wifi worked as good as the 2021 Node that I bought to replace it. No issues with wifi connectivity on the Node.

I’ve played around with a number of streamers. The Raspberry 4 with a Hat really has a lot of functionality, is easily set up and is cheap. I love Roon but you need a Core. Your unit makes a lot of sense and I love the easy ripping. The price seems a bit much, however. I bought and dedicated a used Intel Nuc for that. Now that was very difficult to get to work correctly. It works effortlessly now but I’m not sure I would recommend it due to the set up technicalities. … good topic and review.

Great comparison Jay, if I could pick only one I’d go with the Innuos as I have a bunch of CDs I could rip and I almost never have friends over to listen to music. I currently stream using Roon core on my PC to a pair of PSB AM3 speakers while I work from home or when not working I steam to my OPPO 205 in my theatre system. I have Totem Tribe III on wall speakers. I didn’t have room for a music and theatre system and the Totems work great for double duty.

I plan to pick up an xDuoo XQ50 Pro 2. It’s a bluetooth converter. The reason I want the xDuoo over the iFi’s Zen Blue v2 is because I am able to hook my xDuoo with a pure silver USB A to USB C. Unfortunately, iFi uses an adaptor which may not compete against a pure silver cord. I also plan to hook them up with oil filled RCA silver cables.

I think you should keep both and have the best of both worlds. I'm not a Roon user but am interested in it. I just haven't had the time to re-rip my CDs into my PC. I would be interested to hear how the Innuos compares to something like the Bluesound Vault. For streaming I picked up one of those Wiim minis and it has been great. With the aux input I can connect my old Chromecast audio and continue to play groups with my other Chromecast supported devices. It also has Tidal Connect and plays gapless. The ifi Stream was initially billed to someday have Chromecast built-in but now it looks like it won't. Sadly it seems that Google has lost interest or "borrowed" so much IP from Sonos that they have had to leave it off the market. It's an interesting conversation and with streaming as the go to source for many consumers I think we'll see more and more consumer friendly streaming components.

Great topic. I'm about to go Roon after seeing how nice of an experience it is. Seems like the Zen Mini is the only Roon core streamer out there (at reasonable price). I don't think you can bypass the Zen's dac either. So you're stuck with that dac which you said isn't that great. This room setup is difficult to make simple and streamlined, but the experience seems game changing for music discovery and enjoyment.
