What has impressed me watching Tory is his timing. He senses the rush and if there is none he will pause for a second and let his players run down the field. This even led to one of our guys catching a punt in the air to down it.

One of their games was against FCS, but they were the 2nd ranked in the FCS, and this year the FCS has dominated FBS teams with teams like Sac State whooping Colorado State, and Utah State losing big to Weber State. The FCS teams that constantly beat the FBS teams need to be moved to the Pac12 when they lose a few teams next year. Sac State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Weber State, Montana and Montana State should be in the FBS anyway.

well it's not exactly hard to have a guy catch their own punt. you can have your guys wait even like 1-2 seconds before running and get them to catch their own punt. punters can punt the ball so high, you or i could catch their punts. not taking away from your point, just saying that's not always the case. you can catch your own punt easily by just having the punter punt it high. thats how some of those punts that land out of the air at the 1 yard line will get a bounce and not go towards the end zone. the punt the ball angled so that it is going end over end, and also punt it very high too. they can put the ball so high some pro punters can full strength punt the ball like 20 yards. that's why some don't do coffin corner kicks. they just kick it straight, high, and end over end and hope for a good bounce
@carsonsiemons12
@carsonsiemons12 2 жыл бұрын
@@GeoJesse yes, but as a punter it's better to coffin corner it because even if you are punting Aussie style it can roll forward when it hits the ground. I mean I watch a lot of football and at the NFL and College level it's not often that the punt is caught in air.

The camera angle + video games make people underestimate just how difficult this is. What this guy is doing is amazing, and at a NFL level.

Hell yeah it's hard. I wanted to be a punter in high school especially being that back in the 90s there weren't any black punters. I wanted to be the first one, but man it was hard as hell. To try and hit the ball at the right spot with the foot, and then try to get the right hangtime.....and don't even get me started on directional kicking. Coffin corner punts are hard af to consistently do. Learned the hard way that punting in Madden and punting in real life are two different things. But I at least gave it a shot. Mad respect to punters since then.

really cool take, somethign to consider though: it is possible that the reason the offense averages only 232 yards per game (considered low) might be because their offensive drives have less opportunity to reach a high number due to the success of taylors punts. So while taylor is the reason for this i wouldnt say its "taylor bailing out a poor offense" as much as it is "taylor putting his offense in such a high quality position that they are not required to do long drives"

I´m pretty sure that´s nonsense, because why would you want to give away the chance for a touchdown / field goal (6 / 3 points respectively) only to have your defense make the stop to THEN still get the points? Also having the ball in your position means having control of the game... So they may be more relaxed, but if the offense is struggling because of that, then fuck idk...

When a team has a good defense and struggling offense... An elite punter can massively help a team. In 2017 Tom Herman was in his first year at Texas following a bad season that got Charlie Strong fired. Their offense was super inconsistent but the defense was decent. Michael Dickson was their punter and I watched all season as that dude completely carried that team. They went 7-6 that year but I guaruntee if they had even an pretty good punter... They win no more than 4-5 games. That offense would go ice cold sometimes and Dickson was totally flip the field position and force the other team to always have to drive 70-90 yards on every possession no matter where Texas kicked from. It helped their defense soooo much and absolutely saved their offense from constantly having to start drives from their own redzone. That was not a 7 win team... It was a sub 500 team with the best punter in the country.

I would just like to point out that just because he was impactful in games against some cupcake teams, doesn’t mean he is the most impactful in college football. I like the argument. He just doesn’t have a strong enough correlation with winning games. If they play a strong opponent with a solid offense, the offense should not have a hard time driving down the field whether that from the 5 or the 35.

Okay you make a valid point(s). It'll never happen. (Obviously) Where would Iowa be without him? Where are these meta-human punters coming from? Seems like all the sudden guys are embracing being punters earlier in there football life's & developing into monsters.

This is more of an indictment of Iowa’s offense. They have the second-worst offense in the country, and they’ve played South Dakota State and Nevada. Any punter’s numbers will be inflated. For instance, San Diego State has the fifth worst offense, and their punter has similar numbers to Taylor. There’s a strong correlation between number of punts and average yard per punt.

The only thing about Taylor that hinders a Heisman campaign is the fact that Iowa on average starts at their own 42 yard line on offense. Iowa's NET punt average is 42 yards, while players like Bryce Baringer of MSU and Joe Doyle of Memphis NET 45+ yards with longer average yards per kick.Taylor also trails both of those kickers in average punt distance and hangtime. Taylor is rock solid and I won't deny that - but he's not quite the best in the NCAA.

was gonna say most of the punters stats come from the field possession battle more so than just a punter's leg typically then I watch hommie pretty much reverse the field with 60-65 yard punts consistently and tear drop in some shorter ones with backspin... guys got talent that's for sure and may just be Iowa's most potent weapon given the arguments you've laid out, I don't watch too much college ball so I'll take your word on it. Would be kinnda cool to see a punter take the Heisman put I just can't see it happening without Iowa like getting into the BCS based almost entirely off of his foot as their wins seemingly have been so far.

Whilst I love the game and had the privilege of playing in the Metrodome in a State final as an exchange student as the team's kicker, I've always found it amusing that a game in which the ball is thrown and carried by hand for the bulk of the time on the field is called football.
@DieFlabbergast
@DieFlabbergast 2 жыл бұрын
It's called football because it developed from a whole group of other games that had been called "football" for hundreds of years -- a different set of rules for each English county and sometimes even individual towns. The sport of rugby is still officially called Rugby Football, although admittedly there is a lot more kicking in rugby than in American Football. (There is also Australian Rules Football and Gaelic Football.) All these games were called "football" because the ball could be kicked, whereas in other ball sports you used a bat, racket or club to hit the ball. As long as you know the history there is nothing "amusing" about it. What's REALLY funny is that carrying the ball over the goal line (which has been mis-named ever since the goal posts were moved to the back of the endzone in the 1960s) is still called a "touchdown" even though you don't have to touch the ball to the ground (as you do in rugby).

One of the "benefits" of being a punter in a bad offense is that you can always bomb from deep in your own territory, and you'll almost always be deep in your own territory. I wonder how he does with punts that require more finesse?

Take a look at another punter in the Big Ten. Bryce Baringer at MSU is launching punts weekly at an average of 53.3! Sadly, we have one of the worst defenses and a mediocre offense. Baringer can pin people down at the other side of the field, but then the other team can just move the ball down the field in about 8 plays. Would love to see Baringer on a team that had a defense like Iowa!

Nevermind the ypp. It's his coffin percentage that's frightening. He's not missed one yet this year I believe. He's putting balls on dimes. I was never as good as you Ike. A HS punter. I got the job because a coach saw me punting footballs into a trashcan for fun 40 yards out. Tory is a freak. Reminds me of Roby. Just a sniper. It's one thing to have a big leg. It's another to know where the ball is going to go. His control is nuts. I saw one just die. No bounce. That's almost impossible.
