Age? my father was an engineer. After age 60, he tried to help the family. He worked as a dishwasher at the restaurant 7 days / 24 hours a week. As the matter of fact, he worked at night shift over the weekends. He stopped working as he diagnosed with Parkinson decease at age 85. I earned a B.S. in Accounting (3rd degree) at age 55, but hiring managers don't appreciate mature and hard workers.

Most of my family were just like that too. I'd be like that if I had the opportunity. How do people think older people can afford to live? Many have lost family or family has no interest in them. Good grief, let us earn our own way!

It's harder than ever to work with the younger generations. I have a hard time relating to the youth today. I have opted to work alone, and I am happier for it.

same here! Both me and my husband cannot at all work with the younger generations. They are so closed minded and so NOT tolerant of so many things. Ironic, isn't it, considering what they and the people that lead them are preaching these days. My husband and I trying to make a go of it working from home.

Colorado Springs has very bad age discrimination.

Oh I know. I was a Teacher there but they drove me out unfairly. It caused me to move away and I've had terrible issues But Colorado Springs was never very nice to begin with. I started in 2006 living in Woodland Park and I heard how many people went there to get away from the meanness in the Springs, particularly associated with religion.

I lost out on a promotion because my boss said I was not young abd hip enough. That was 20 years ago. My current employer told me I'm too old for my job. How do I please people like that?

My Mama is 63yrs old and works in a warehouse. She is the hardest working person ive ever known! She has a bunch of young lazy coworkers that do the absolute bare minimum. The young kids in their 20s are so lazy, they dont want to work period!

Minimum pay, expect minimal effort. Only a fool works themselves to death for any company these days, they don’t care about employees.

But see, when you blanket stereotype young people, that is also ageism. As a 53 year old return student, I do recognize that ageism against older people is totally there, but we certainly have to be careful of the words we use as well to describe other people.

Yeah but if nobody is working who has to do it or they are fired??? The whole bunch pass the work to a few employees that their jobs are on the line everyday. Not ok. You get paid... you work period. If they dontwork...that is time stealing & they should be fired for that.

I’m discriminated against by age in healthcare. 90 days or less and I’m OUT. It’s also due to my healing, no longer codependent, no longer seeking validation outside of self etc. Nursing is now made up of travelers and agencies. It’s my license on the line yet no one held accountable by me. It’s out of my hands but all my responsibility.

You're talking about > 50 years old. Really ! I once failed to be part of a graduate programme or an entry level job in the tech because of my age. I graduated I was 32 years old and that programme was recruiting only graduates < 30 years old. I tried to convince them that I have the required degree and I am only 2 years older by the time but they said it's their recruitment policy (South Africa). The heart of a man is always ready to be deceitful.

What's odd is that those of us 50ish grew up with the first tech already. We saw the Atari's, the Commodore 64 etc; I was programming mine using magazine code when I was 13! I worked in tech for 25 years, and then, as if by magic, after 50, finding a job suddenly became very difficult. I have blamed myself enough, and after having recruiters confirm it (age bias), those still in the workforce confirm it, and a career coach says, "I present well in test interviews," I'm not so sure anymore. There is a mentality that only people of a specific age range can sit in an office and have meetings to complete digital media work. As for cutting edge, only some organizations have a cutting edge and wish to spend on it. Most are years behind in software versions due to costs, and if you think every corp is a Space X or apple, you are mistaken. Cheers!

I agree, but I do somewhat blame all of us as a whole. Our society has set it up to look at old people as pathetic. It's quite a strange phenomenon, but it is the truth and it needs to come to an end if humanity will survive.

Because unfortunately upper management (mostly boomers at the peak of their earnings) think anyone looking for a technical job after 50 is as tech illiterate, slow and lacks skills as themselves. They think only younger people with 5 years experience is the sweet spot for a candidate. Not too expensive, not too old and easily replaceable.
@mrparts
@mrparts 19 күн бұрын
If you’re seeking for a job after 50 , dye your hair dark, style your hair in a very professional way and dress elegantly and put together every single day. The idea is that managers equate your age with competence, experience and refinement and not old, obsolete, and out of fashion . Appearances do matter unfortunately.

Language is the least of it. That's just a flashing red warning light. It's practice that really counts. BUT when language is used as a way to buffer a discriminatory environment, that amounts to malpractice anyway

Yeah well they rob older people of their jobs when they are still really capable. I'm 66 and Techie as heck, and the employers won't hire me and I almost DIED unable to afford anything. We older people need to live too.
