Why is Angela Rayner a 'frequent target' for the Tories? | LBC debate

The investigation into Rayner was prompted by a complaint from Tory deputy chairman James Daly, who is understood to have made police aware of neighbours who contradicted Ms Rayner's statement that a property, separate from her husband's, was her main residency.
Mr Daly alleged she may have made a false declaration about where she was living on the electoral register.
Earlier this month, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We're investigating whether any offences have been committed.

Attacking Rayner as a 'hypocrite' for using RtB is a feeble move. Labour have never opposed people owning their own home, or buying their rental property. Labour's opposition was to the Tories defunding councils, ordering them to make up the shortfall by selling social housing stock, and forbidding the councils from using the proceeds to replace properties sold. It was a Tory national asset-stripping campaign. The exact opposite of the 'financial prudence' they are praised for by complicit UK media.

Right To Buy was a flagship Conservative policy. Its stated purpose was to turn renters into homeowners, promising to reduce their monthly payments and build up a tangible asset they could later sell or leave to their family. The unstated purpose was to flip them into being Conservative voters (or entrench existing Conservative loyalty). By attacking Rayner, the Tories and their client media are attacking all the people who took up the opportunity to buy their council house. Many of whom will have sold it since they bought it, and also paid no CGT, for the same reasons as Rayner (profit based on survey value, not discounted amount paid through RTB, allowed offsets for improvements, etc). The Tories are literally attacking their own voter base.

Anyone remember when hundreds of MPs were flipping which of their taxpayer-funded houses was their main residence, to reduce their tax burden? We were told to keep our noses out of their business. We were told it was 100% legal. We were told it was 100% moral. We were told it was 100% ethical. We were told to go back to our prole-slums, and not question our betters. The example was set, the precedent was established, that this was proper behaviour. And the public absorbed that message, that they were also allowed to do the same. A million people will have organised their finances the same way as Rayner, following the example of 1990s MPs. But because there's an election imminent, the Tories' pet police commissioner is conducting a fake investigation against Rayner, for acts that were never investigated when carried out by Tory MPs. Strange how a Greater Manchester care worker, and mother of a disabled child, is held to a stricter standard than UK lawmakers.

Angela Rayner selling her house would have been advised by the estate agent. Tory ministers purchasing houses, selling assets, etc. would have been advised by specialist tax advisors and legal teams. Angela Rayner potentially owes £1,500. Nadhim Zahawi allegedly agreed to pay HMRC multiple millions. Conservative chancellor ‘forgot’ he had not paid stamp duty on 7 luxury flats… Perspective has been skewed to a righting view for decades and become worse since Alexander de Pfeffle Boris Johnson…

She's only broken the law if she intended to commit fraud. If she's simply made a mistake then she just needs to pay what was owed. If she's found to have owed, she'll resign as she said she would, but there will not be any criminal charges because then they'd have to prove the intent in court and there isn't a case to be brought; she didn't do anything intentionally. Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak's wife legally avoided £20m in taxes whilst being the wife of the UK Chancellor (who also had a green card for his first 18 months in the post and wasn't officially a resident of the UK).

I'm voting Labour...I've never voted tory...but I don't like starmer ..He wants the pm ship his portrait in number ten ...He doesn't like Angela her being more popular than him .

The guy who says she may have broken the law, it must be remembered that the law is not a single line. If I get a speeding ticket, for going 80 on a motorway, I have broken the law yet this breach is far less serious than stealing vast sums of money from the public purse. The devil *is in* the detail.

⁠ Surely one should consider chronology. Sue Gray took a post with Labour AFTER investigating Boris (her investigation of Boris could’ve been one of the reasons to join Labour) whereas the Police Chief spoke at a Tory conference BEFORE opening an investigation into Rayner’s alleged misdoings. The investigation itself should be investigated for ‘wasting police time’ . Even if she is in breach (which I doubt) of any law it is past the statute of limitation and therefore is not prosecute-able. Police should be called in to prosecute those involved in this investigation for ‘wasting police time’ …. Carrying a fine or penalty of six months in prison, I believe. IRONIC … No!
