Cycling isn't expensive, some people just prefer buying gear instead of using it. KZbin only reflects the most materialistic side of cycling. I bought a bike for $120 and went on a 60 day bikepacking tour for $1000 (that's CAD). Most people spend more money than that staying home.

Hmmm… I got a handbuilt-in-Waterloo, Wisconsin Trek road bike in 1976. I kept it and rode it for 30+ years. I tried a couple of other bikes along the way, but sold them. So… aside from replacing tires, tubes brake pads… it wasn’t expensive at all.

Wow, that was as energetic, diverse and multifaceted as Sea Otter itself. So many topics in so little time. I could write a book about this in the comments, because there's so much that I can identify with. But just a couple and just like Ferg Dog, I know that cycling does not have to be that expensive. Also, we really don't need 200 people to make a pair of cycling shoes. The same as we don't need 200 to make an iPhone. Anyone from the cycling industry who says "it costs that much because we pay our workers well". Is either an idiot or a liar.

Oh, man! Thank you for always bringing the human aspect to this thing we love! Most annoying thing about cycling that I can't believe nobody mentioned: Cars! Cars/Bikes infrastructure. Yesterday I saw a cyclist towing a baby trailer, waiting at a traffic light right next to big-ass trucks and it sent shivers down my spine.

So easy yet so mysterious to so many: It's high cost of design and manufacturing + low volume sales. (Yes I know bike sales have exploded post pandemic - it's still low for the engineering and manufacturing going in to all those parts.) Think a car maker selling only 1000 units a year across four size ranges and three or more build qualities.

I only buy old bicycles because of how ridiculous the cycling industry has become. About 7 to 10 years ago, I was thinking that a bicycle priced at around $1,000 is ridiculous. Nowadays, you’re seeing bicycles priced at $5,000 to $10,000. The cheapest old bike I ever bought is a Specialized rockhopper mtb (maybe early 2000s model), got it for $35. I rode it for thousands of miles of mtb trails, gravel and paved roads without noticing something seriously going wrong. I was going 45kph at times in it. Proof that you don’t need a bicycle costing more than a motorcycle to do the typical cycling routine. Sadly it was stolen recently. So many memories with that bike.

Expensive? NO. Unless you are a recreational rider on pro race bikes or CAT 4-3-2 racer. Pro and Olympians get their race bikes for free. I have to pay for mine; $1000 each for a custom bike from a new bike purchase modified to high strength and dependability.

I just want to know why it's so expensive. I was 'PRICED OUT' of cycling. I've been building bicycles from bicycles nobody wanted. Yes, I do dumpster/trash diving for bicycle parts. I've been doing it for over 30 years now......unknown to the world. I envy you guys who can afford the tools, let alone the bicycles themselves. I can't afford it anymore. My Motto: ONE LESS CAR!!

Because those bikes are “PRO” level or have specialized (not the brand) components. most people can still afford it. Try buying a pro level car or motorcycle… You can still buy reasonably priced bicycles and serve it’s purpose but not as good as the pro graded bicycles.

Le vélo n’est pas cher c’est simplement que les gens veulent le top du top .s’ils faisaient ça en voiture ils voudraient tous des Pagani à 450000€ et diraient que l’automobile est trop chère… J’ai payé 13000€ mon sl7 sworks mais je ne peste pas ce vélo vaut chaques € investis mais il y a de très bons vélo pour 2/3000€ qui font 90% du jeu. C’est ma passion c’est pour celà que je ne regarde pas le budget,le vélo a changé ma vie cela vaut des millions en réalité.
