What did you think of V3's ending? 🤔

I'd say it's pretty alright. The twist is good imo, but it's just Tsumugi as an antagonist. I wish there were more hints and characterisation we could see with her instead of her being passive. I think the Hope’s Peak saga being fiction in the V3 universe is fine on its own. I mean, it's just separate continuitites, so no harm no fowl.

I personally find the twist of the world becoming so twisted that they worship this fictional story about death and dismiss identity in exchange for fame to tap into existential dread far greater than most stories that actively attempt to do so. V3 ending instills more hopelessness and uncertainty than 1 ever did despite that being it's end goal

I never understood the hate for this ending tbh, it perfectly encapsulates the themes of the game and is an incredibly awesome meta commentary on the nature of fiction as a whole which is extremely uncommon in fiction because of how difficult that sort of thing is to do right! As someone who got WAY TOO attached to some of the characters in the first game (to the point where I felt compelled to write fanfiction that prevented the deaths of two of them), I never felt the ending was a "slap to the face" as many claim, I was just happy to see the characters again, even in the horrifying context of the evil cosplay. Fiction is a much more malleable medium than many people seem to think. For example the endings of both Danganronpa 2 and V3 are comparable to some of the more surreal segments of the metal gear solid series, one that is praised for having such a meta relationship with the players themselves. The way the ending profoundly exclaims that fiction can change the world alludes both to the growth of the characters and to the very players who may have been playing since the first game in the series, almost like a call to action for the players to go create their own story to inspire another just as they had been by Danganronpa. The ending is one of many reasons I consider V3 to be my favorite in the series, this video was a joy to watch. 🙂

The game was sniffing its own farts. It isn't that deep. It is just a slap in the face to anyone who cared about the first two games. I think it is a good thing Kodaka has never gone back to DR.

The world thing i think its more poorly explained , the characters of v3 are real the only fictional thing about them is their identity and memories unlike the other games where the characters are entirely fictional , tsumugi said in a line that the series went from videogames to anime to real life shows , and that also explains the tsumugi cospox thing , she could cosplay the characters from the other games because their existence is fictional while in v3 cast they exist as their bodies are real but their personality and memories are not

Personally, V3’s ending is one I dislike but respect. I can understand and praise for everything it wanted to achieve from a storytelling and emotional standpoint. However, where the ending kills it is in its execution. I think it’s hard to follow, absurdly long and feels like an attack on one’s character on a first viewing. I was one who thought it was a horrible ending, but has come around to seeing it for more than what I initially thought.

I’ll admit it definitely drags. I cover most of the issues with it in my other video about V3’s ending, and I go over a couple things that I don’t think add enough to the overall impact of the ending to justify how much extra time they add on. It’s by no means a perfect ending, but I adore the depth of its main ideas and how much there is to talk about surrounding it. But hey, you don’t like it? That’s cool! It was clearly a very bold choice so nobody can be blamed for not really vibing with it.

I think it would have been peak if they hadn’t introduced the meta danganronpa element and just left it as tsumugi and the team trying to copy what Junko did. It works in universe anytime after Junkos death and removes everything people disliked about the ending for the most part, it was so deflating seeing the past characters just to be told lol they’re not real and I wish they didn’t take that route.

The ending has always been garbage and will always be garbage. I personally think Tsumugi is a giant liar in pretty much everything she said at the end of the game. She was the one who made those "audition" tapes since it completely contradicts the entire prologue of the game. She lied about "cospox" as well. I have no reason to believe that anything she said or did is true at all, actually. She even drops hints about being a copy cat before being squashed. There is enough context in the story to show that she is most likely lying. HOWEVER, that doesn't even matter to me because just the fact they had the gall to say "the first two games are fake and don't matter, stupid" is just an insult to anyone who cared enough to bother. I personally hate Tsumugi the most out of any character in the series and Chapter 6 of V3 is the absolute WOSRT chapter in the entire franchise to me for what it did. Even worse than DR2 Chapter 3. It is huffing its own farts thinking it is smarter than it is as a story. It is a shame, too. The first four chapters were simply amazing overall. The characters are hit and miss for me, but they have REALLY good high point characters that I really like. Shuichi, Maki, Kaito, Kaede, and Kokichi are all some of the best characters the series has. I don't even hate the overall ideas or even message they are conveying. The problem is that it took the characters and emotional moments from what came before it and pretty much said "lol. doesn't matter. fake." No duh it is fake, Kodaka. People got attached to the series enough for them to even MAKE three games in the first place. Spitting on that with such a overly convoluted meta arrogance is just a low blow. Especially the first game for me. Despite its flaws, I found the first game to be the most overall grounded and real of the series. The school was claustrophobic and unsettling. Just walking around the building felt like it was suffocating, unlike the giant island of 2 and the open grounds of V3. The characters wanting to get out of such a thing makes sense. The entire atmosphere was designed in a way to be uncomfortable, unsettling, and help fray the characters nerves to finally snap. None of the other games come close to that feeling. The characters and setting and world all were over the top to give it the unique style the game had for the time, however, when you break down each character, they are probably THE MOST real of all the casts of all the games. They were all insecure, desperate, and emotional characters. Despite their talents, fame, and larger than life personas, they all felt significantly more real as people than any of the casts in the other two games which only continued to get more over the top with each entry. That alone had me going. Even their goals and ambitions are all grounded in reality, unlike the other two games that were a little more... let's say, over the top (like no, I can't suspend my disbelief on Kirumi being the real Prime Minister of Japan, even in a crazy world like Danganronpa). There were more emotional moments for me in the first game than any of the others as well. Makoto trying to come to terms with what happened with Sayaka and her betrayal and death and how that shapes him the rest of the game. Mondo's insecurity of feeling weak because of his past resulting in him doing a mistake he could never take back to someone who THOUGHT they were weak, but was stronger than Mondo was. Kiyotaka's in turn struggle dealing with that afterward as he never had any other friends in his life. Aoi's breakdown after what happened to Sakura in Trial 4 and Sakura's emotional Will to the other students. Kyoko finding out what happened to the father she claimed to hate in that little hidden room. All of those things affected me way more than almost everything in V3 outside of Kaede's and Kaito's deaths. Stuff that SHOULD have been emotional was ruined by my dislike of characters like Angie and Tenko and my complete fuming anger during Chapter 6 that I started skipping through some dialogue to just get it over with faster. The cast in THH is severely under appreciated by the fanbase at large. The fact V3 wanted to mitigate all that by ruining its own series world setting, even if I can argue there is evidence Tsumugi is lying, doesn't stop the bad taste in my mouth from coming up for them to even have the gall to do that as even a possibility in story at all. That is just how I feel on the matter. In the end, THH is really underrated and to me is the best narrative in the series, DR2 is really good but has some more flaws than the first game in structure of story, and V3 would have been amazing if they just didn't talk about Hope's Peak at all and just pretended it never existed in the setting instead of ruining everything in the worst way possible in the worst ending possible.

While I might not agree with the overall point you've made, I have to say you've explained it very well and I respect you for doing so. I would consider the trial a slap in the face if the entire purpose behind it was not rebuking that sort of thinking and showing how meaningful everything was regardless. Like I said though, I respect you a lot for writing such a detailed explanation.

I thought it's understood that V3 is set in the "real world" (like Digimon Tamers) while the Hope's Peak saga is "anime" (like any other Digimon series)...they did exist in their own canon so they all "happened" and their stories aren't retconned or anything IMO.

@orga7777 I mean does the Hope's Peak Era gets improved by V3 and vice versa because I think V3 is OK on its own...they're both fiction overall even if V3 is "real world fiction" by the virtue of having Hope's Peak Era be fiction within that world.

@@zjzr08 I don't need a game to tell me the first two games are fiction. I already know that. By doing such a convoluted meta plot device to drag the first two games into this with its dumb little speech on fiction is insulting to me on every level. It makes me wonder why I bothered to waste my time at all, really. It breaks the world that was set up in the worst way possible for me. It would have been better to remove all mention of the first games out of the picture and just let V3 be its own thing instead of sending a boot to the groin with what they did to people who bothered to care.
