Edward isn’t the only English king to be made a saint. When the Church of England returned after the Commonwealth Charles the first, who had been executed by Cromwell, was seen as Martyr.

William the Conk disbanded the Witan in 1066 and made the throne of England hereditary. This means that all kings from the founding of the kingdom of England in 924 BAR ONE were ELECTED. So basically a lifetime appointment. Edward the Con was the only “king” to not be selected and voted upon. IMO, Edward was gay - see St Aelred’s hagiography ( the bit just before the Witan advises the King to marry). Edward spent most of his time at an Abbey in Normandy before joining Duke Robert’s court and after Robert’s death in 1035( to 1041). No doubt he learnt about healing herbs and poisons. He put those lessons to good use by poisoning Harthacnut the fist time they met in Lambeth in 1041 ( Ed was already co-regent) and in 1053 he poisoned Godwin ( Godwin had lost the protection of Emma d 1052).
