A few years ago, allegations surfaced that Musk propositioned an employee on his private jet for sexual favors. When asked to comment by a publication, he instead countered by asking for an extension, delaying the breaking of the story. In the 48 hours between that decision and the release of the story, he didn't provide a comment, but he did publicly announce his switch from Democrat to Republican. He also hinted that this switch would result in fake stories of misconduct surfacing soon. The story did surface, and his new allies have happily protected him from its consequences.

That plus reading about the USSR cured me of any possible antidemocratic tendencies. I view America and Ukraine as the biggest hopes for the world at the moment, but now with Trumpian America heading towards a disaster, Argentina-style. Elon and the other tech bros clearly are abysmally ignorant on all these counts. I was around for part of this history, but I’ve never heard it presented in such a coherent way. I didn’t know that about Stanford being founded by a eugenicsist, but it makes sense; it has always been the most conservative of Ivy League, if you can call it that. Eugenics had its foundation in the Social Darwinism that practically leapt off the pages of the Origin of the Species and adapted itself to the social sphere, at the heart of Manifest Destiny, continuing in the ideas of slavery apologists, in Italian fascism, in Ayn Rand and Reaganism, blossoming recently in Trumpism. Its central idea is the law of the jungle, a place of unending conflict where men could slaughter each other and come out dominant. (Pete Hegseth, the self-designated warrior, has stated he believes precisely this. )And this dominance is merely the product of deterministic nature. If one prevails, one is superior by natural law. If one fails, one is inferior. (This is part of Calvinism, so it fit in nicely with capitalist dogma.) The ultimate expression of this is the psychopath, who is too busy asserting his male dominance, and has no patience with, say, frills like empathy or democracy. And that brings us to Musk, to Trump, to Gaetz, to DeSantis, to Andreesen, to Altman. I never ever believed that this Orwellian despot Musk was in the least a “free speech absolutist.” He has not the capacity to believe in any ideal but his own supremacy. It’s the age of the psychopath, and it’s his free speech, not mine or yours.

@lauriethompson740

Yes it's definitely interesting that it was founded by a eugenicist, but that doesn't prove it still is like that, so we need to see evidence that this was 'enshrined in the institution'. Eugenics was a common belief before the Nazis, people like HG Wells were signed up. Pretty much every institution and person of the past won't meet modern liberal moral standards, Jefferson owned slaves, Lincoln was a white supremacist, he even managed to be against slavery on the grounds of white supremacy! Even the most egalitarian version of Christianity that fought slavery, Quakerism, had to be convinced into that stance, many Quakers started off slave owners, are we to conclude that Quakers today are 'residually racist' therefore? So it would be help to see evidence that Stanford is still eugenicist

I personally think we underestimate the degree to which algorithms are shaping behavior right now. People like Musk I describe as ideologically weak. And social media algorithms effect their behavior in a Pavlovian way. This is exactly what happened with Joe Rogan as well. Your description of hippies as vague communal libertarians rather than socialists makes a lot of sense. That’s a proper historical materialist statement that I always had trouble reconciling beyond the weakening of movements by capitalists through appropriation of the aesthetic.
@HeadOnAStick
@HeadOnAStick 3 күн бұрын
The motivating center of the hippie movement was peace and love. To them, communal life was not about leftism, it was about sharing, which was a feature of love and kindness. It was also a way to survive after they "dropped out" of the cruel and crazy world around them. And valuing personal freedom was not about libertarianism, it was about feeling their identities and values had no place in the culture and society around them and wanting to break free from those limitations. Although it might make a lot of sense, it's historically inaccurate to back-fit various -isms to what was happening with hippies in the late 60's. They were a bunch of kids who hated the world their parents had made (war, racism, religion, sexual suppression), so they broke free with their peace-love-sex-drugs-music thing.
@mrjades4764
@mrjades4764 3 сағат бұрын
@@HeadOnAStick You are right certainly about motivations, but I guess the lack of dialectical materialism and scholastic philosophy are what separates it from being a leftist movement. So despite it’s rebellious action and communal approach, it was still a movement based in fulfilling the self by removing its community from the restrictions of the globalised market, rather than seeking to improve the lives of workers as a whole and considering the ramifications of the universality of their approach. So while not intentionally libertarian, history has shown the movement has led to an increase of libertarianism, especially among that age group.

And I immediately began to suspect that the Elon Musk we all thought we knew was a ruse, and has been for a long time. I suspect nothing fundamental about his haas really changed. he just has the power now to take off the mask and not care who sees him clearly for the first time.

@@Echelon730 if echo chambers mean being constantly exposed to literal na*I rhetoric, bots, porn and hate, then I rather live in my echo chamber. Why would I want to willingly expose myself to hateful bigots? Do you keep people around you loathe because "echo chamber"? Social media literally fries our brains by spreading misinformation, propaganda, hate and clickbait - all from "both sides". There's no true "liberal media" as those as well live off of clickbait and engagement is their fuel/money (y'all still remember that Buzzfeed video hating on men? Yeah). Add to this the algorithms, which push negative news and ragebaity articles to fuel engagement to further the rising division among people. I don't want to participate in it anymore, as I've seen it only makes us more and more angry, fearful and hateful towards each other. Mainstream and social media, as well as goverments across the world, live off of division and hate, each week we have our new boogeyman to hate instead of hating the system that benefits off of it. 80+ years ago it was the Jews, then in the early 90s to middle 20s it were the gays, then it was Muslims, now it's the trans people and immigrants. Politicians all around the world will fuel this exact rhetoric and one day they will use it to create a new boogeyman to invade other countries, like the US did after 9/11. I don't want any part in that. I will keep my friends and family close to cherish and protect them and don’t want any part in that division. You do you. You keep those around with similiar values to you and you keep those close that you love. With Internet it's no different. It's your choice who you interact with or if you let the media and politics divide us. If you let them, the rich will only get richer while middle class will keep shrinking until the whole system breaks apart and we either haw a new war, where we all get annihilated, new dark age of isolationist politics like in the late 80s/early 90s overtakes us or we finally take a stand against those in power. The choice is yours. I made mine.

Musk reminds me of a character from a book called Rise and fall of comrade Zylo,the main protagonist is a bureaucrat who overestimates himself and thinks all the state hierarchy directly coincides with his personal merit, he is a tragicomic character whose actions are often unfounded and wrong but he justifies them with his "good intentions "a figure who ascribes to himself an importance and value he does not have, showing how the system of time transforms each individual into an instrument inconsistent with his true capacity and merit. At the same time, Author uses irony to highlight how protagonist and others like him are stuck in a self-destructive cycle, where silent arrogance and low-key arrogance lead to successive mistakes that rob them of every hope to progress or change.

It'd be awesome to see you dive deeper into this rabbit hole as it goes waaaay deeper than I think most leftists are aware. The rationalist movement (further integrating neoliberalism and eugenics), Curtis Yarvin and Peter Thiel's fascist vision for libertarianism, even Nick Land's far right accelerationism. It's all incredibly influential over silicon valley culture - I learned far too much about that stuff when I was a startup bro, unfortunately.

@linagreenlyfe6705 that's not the only criteria for eugenics to be okay - eugenics could also be used to try to eliminate groups of people. And a lot of these people belong to the "race realist" crowd who believe in biological determinism, evolutionary psychology and racial iq.
@aYoutubeuserwhoisanonymous
@aYoutubeuserwhoisanonymous 6 күн бұрын
@@alexjeffrey3981 well, map is not the territory their beliefs can be wrong or right, but no state of the world per say justifies anything, that's a judgement people make in reaction to the world. A person can be a race realist and still advocate for racial equality. Those positions aren't mutually exclusive. Sometimes I wonder whether egalitarians who get a knee-jerk reaction to such ideas actually are lying about their commitment to equality regardless of the state of the world, but the other hypotheses that they had bad experiences and associated hold an idea with negative system 1 connotation would explain it straightforwardly. Biological determinism is probably false, but interactionist determinism is not false, there might be universal human values, like fairness which is entailed by human psychology. Evolutionary psychology can be accurate, although like majority of scientific fields a lot of non well known journals are probably questionable, people do have proximate desires like seeking comfort, or being lazy, which is actually well within evolutionary psychology, it is explains why people have those things. It's kind of a fact that racial IQ differences exist, the main debate is about the hypotheses regarding the cause. Rationalist movement rejected curtis yarvin, I think you just swallowed sensational propaganda. You can search scott alexander's neo-reactionary FAQ, a prominent thought leader in the rationalist movement, where he goes over some of their claims, the thing is the idea that one can change any of their beliefs in light of evidence led to early times in their movement where far-right or bad intent actors spread their convincing arguments, it has decreased over the years as people have gained more experience , but it still happens from time to time with one or two people getting arrested (search about this girl called ziz). Even at the peak of neo-reactionism in rationality space only a small fraction of them believed in it.
@alexjeffrey3981
@alexjeffrey3981 6 күн бұрын
@@aKZbinuserwhoisanonymous glad you could make it, representative of the rationalist community. Are you aware of Scott Alexander's relationship with HBDGirl, a prominent race realist in the rationalist sphere? Or that the neoreaction movement originated from within the LessWrong community? The thing that's disputable with racial iq is not the statistics, but their cause. "race realists" take the position of biological determinism, that the iq disparity is genetic and ethnic. The progressive position is that it's caused by societal factors that are mutable. And before you cite the adoption studies, they are not exactly an effective control given society still treats children differently based on race regardless of where and by who they are raised. The funniest thing about the rationalist movement to me is that they claim to essentially follow in the Marxist tradition of "ruthless critique of all that exists", but the one thing they almost universally refuse to critique is neoliberalism. It's a bedrock of rationalist thought - grey tribe and all that. Don't try to use the propaganda argument with me, by the way. I'm critiquing from the perspective of an ex-member. I used to be in direct communication with both Scott Alexander and gwern and be very active on hacker news and SSC.
@alexjeffrey3981
@alexjeffrey3981 6 күн бұрын
@@aKZbinuserwhoisanonymous and as a follow-up, race realists are always pulling the "why won't you at least consider it" argument. The problem is that you could have to eliminate the societal impact on race in order to even have a chance at determining any biological component, and even then, it doesn't let you _do_ anything except provide an excuse to implement a racial hierarchy. Which is why it's so suspicious that people cling to the idea - it's not actually useful for anything except fascism. And given the overlap between race realists and neoreactionaries, it leaves very little worthwhile discussion because there's a strong undercurrent of "please give us the opportunity to declare an untermensch".
