Drones should be adopted but not for the reasons Elon covers as the logistics & training of jet pilots is not a 5 minute matter but takes years. Think crossbow to bow as yes you lose range & performance but any gamer with a crash coarse can operate a drone. Western militaries have to adapt to what is available in personal but to drone will replace a jet with a pilot is cobblers.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. Elon is right. He is not just talking about current drone tech but future drone tech. We are already using semi-automated drones in the Ukraine war. So when the ground pilot cannot complete a mission, the drone will use AI to hit a target based on AI. Automating a plane is far easier than automating a car. It's why we had plane autopilot for so many years before cars. As mentioned in the video the drones have the benefits of g's but they will also have the benefits of speed and payload within months let alone years if people are serious of making the change. As AI or a drone pilot can fly anything a human can fly. You are not just removing pilot error caused by high g's but you are also reducing the wight drastically as you are not just getting rid of the pilot but most of the cockpit including the life support and ejection system. IOW we can take an F35 and respect it for remote piloting and it will be able to do the job better now. but more importantly, you can make a drone far cheaper and far more capable than the F35 from scratch. The additional benefit is you wont lose the pilot in the worst-case scenario. People who cannot be replaced in a few months or a year or 2. We unfortunately have pilots who have died trying to do tricks that would be laughably easy with fully automated drones. The big problem is those "unmanned aircraft" were not made to replace the f35 (if that were the case a lot of people should get fired) There is no technical limitation preventing future unmanned aircraft from outperforming an f35. P.S. I love your videos and I'm still subscribed.

Musk has criticized the cost of the F-35, but in the context of the US military and NATO forces, maintaining and developing a fleet of multi-role fighters is essential to ensure flexibility and readiness in a variety of situations. The high cost of the F-35 may be an issue, but it can be justified by the development of highly integrated technology and long-term combat capabilities in modern warfare environments. Militaries must balance cost, performance, and sustainment, which can sometimes make choosing medium-range aircraft, rather than low-cost aircraft or UAVs, the optimal choice.
@xxnightdriverxx9576
@xxnightdriverxx9576 6 күн бұрын
The cost isnt even that high anymore due to the high numbers produced. In fact it is now routhly equal or even lower than that of many more expensive 4th or 4.5th generation planes. F-35As of the last few years are coming in at around 80-90 million dollar per plane. For comparison, the latest F-15EX is more than 90 million dollars, the F-22 was 150 million dollars, the newest F-16 Block 72 and the last few F/A 18 Super Hornets costs around 65 million dollars. For a non-US based comparision, the Eurofighter Typhoon sits at around 100 million dollars, the French Rafale is around the same price as well. People like to be outraged at large numbers but dont actually know if those numbers are reasonable. Unfortunately the cost is difficult to calculate, as the aircraft are bought in bulk (X billion dollar for Y number of aircraft) and often include spare parts and maintenance, specifically when selling to other countries, and the prices can vary widely depending on the year, country and individual deal (for example, India paid 100 million dollar per Rafale-M in 2016 and 160 million in 2024; Germany bought Eurofighers in 2007 for 120 million €, in 2009 for 90 million€, while Spain paid 160 million € in 2010). Yes the cost per flight hour is higher for the F-35 than for non stealth aircraft, but it isnt that outrageously high either. Some sources say that it is around 25.000 dollar per flight hour, compared to around 20.000 for an Eurofighter or Rafale and around 15.000 for an F-16 (one of the cheapest jets to fly), but these costs are even harder to calculate than buying price, sometimes it is not clear if fuel is included or not, and it depends on how you count parts, manhours, downtime, do you count the overhaul cylces that only happen every 10+ years, and so on. Every source is different there, so comparisons are difficult. Again people like to say "oh thats so expensive" but they forget or ignore the cost of other aircraft as well as the utility that a stealth coating can bring.

F35s have excellent costs for putting what is essentially a stealth supercomputer in the sky, all while replacing 4000+ older 4th gen fighters across the US+Allies sphere. That includes parts, maintenance, training, etc for something that is going to being utilized until the 2070s. Biggest test of this statement isn't ukraine, but Iran and Houthis vs. Israel. 99% od long range cruise AND ballistic missiles were shot down by sams and... you guessed it... manned fighter jets. F15s killed like 50 drones in one engagement over Iraq. Future may be unmanned, but you can't beat the versatility of the manned air superiority / strike fighter to deal with current gen threats. Also "hypersonic missiles" is a ridiculous term as almost every ballistic missile goes hypersonic. The actual manuevreable type of hypersonic missiles that people are hyping are extremely niche weapons to hit targets in deeply contested airspace and will likely never be more than a fringe part of military arsenals like long range cruise missiles and icbms are today. IE. They will certainly not be used in mass numbers like artillery, glide bombs or air to air missiles are today.

Most people forget how him giving Ukraine Starlink early on has been credited by their low level officers with basically saving the utterly destroyed communications of Ukrainian military during critical period in 2022. Since then everyone and their grandmother have been scrambling to figure out how to get something comparable into orbit. Problem is that technology needed to enable very low orbit expendable and cheap satellites is reusable rockets. And SpaceX is the only one that has them so far.

There's no point in making a stealth drone. The whole point of a drone is that it's relatively inexpensive so you can run riskier opps and overwhelm enemies with numbers. If you look at all the proposed drones, they're all almost as expensive as a manned fighter. Because the point of those programs is to siphon off as much DoD procurement money as possible, not to field a useful weapons platform. Arguably, that was also the point of the F-35 program, and is why that program has such shortcomings. The optimal combat drone would be made mostly from plywood with nylon fasteners, powered by a 3D-printed pulse jet, and run on anhydrous ammonia made in-situ at the staging base from air and water with either nuclear or solar power.

It's not the most massive difference. It's not nearly as large of a morale hit during a full scale conventional war. Russia and Ukraine loses pilots all the time and nobody makes a massive deal of it because it's a real war with hundreds of thousands lost on each side. It's only a huge morale hit because the US largely fights counterinsurgencies out of sight and out of mind with no more than a couple thousand losses over the course of decades. When fighting a force advanced enough to shoot down f35s, a lost pilot is will not be nearly as newsworthy as it would be in Iraq/AFG.

When I hear People making such a Big Deal of Hypersonic Missiles I immediately know they have no Idea of the Topic. Because There is alot of Variables and Problems with the entire Topic. First Off. We need to think about the Roles to Fill. An F35 is not made to be Shot Down. Its made to Run Hundreds of Sorties without being Shot down. A Drone even if You can Build 4 of them instead of a Single F35. Will end up more Expensive when You lose a Single Drone each Sortie. Because after 4 Sorties You basicly lost an F35 Worth. When the F35 itself is still Flying. Secondly we also need to think about Issues like actual Combat Effectiveness. Because we are as of now far away from Drones having anywhere near the Capabilities of a Manned Fighter Jet. And if they Simply cannot Fulfill the Mission. Then regardless of using Drones. We will still need the F35. And Finally there is the Issue with Countermeasures. Because while Encrypted Communications and Datalinks might be Secure in the Sense of being Manipulated or Read by the Enemy. They are far less Secure in concerns to Jamming. Not to mention that requiring a Constant Connection also mean that Stealth is effectively Impossible due to the Signar Revealing their Presence. And once You know something is in a Rough Area it becomes alot Harder for that thing to Stay Hidden. Which means that for Drones to actually have Chance of being Remotely useful. They effective need to be Capable of Fully Autonomous Action. Meaning each of them needs a Fully Capable AI. That is not only Capable of Determining Mission Objectives by itself and Carry out a Mission while Adapting to Changes. It also has to be Capable of Dealing with the Enemy trying to Interfere with this. And with Current Tech were AI can be Locked out by something like a Captcha. This is just too easy to Counter. Because Something as Simple as Unexpected Camouflage Patterns are enough to throw AI off the Target.

The funniest thing about Elon using that phrase, “jack of all trades, master of none”, is that arguably the F-35 is the master of everything. It’s a flying supercomputer with capabilities practically indistinguishable from magic compared to its predecessors and competitors, and is only outclassed in performance and maneuvering by the F-22. Combatant commanders will curse him to the grave if he successfully cuts purchase numbers of F-35s (which would also drive up the price).

Wrong premise that is only there because it's a manned platform: "It needs to do everything, just like a manned platform. It needs to carry weapons, have sensors to target those weapons, have electronic countermeasures, have satellite communication package...". Reality: Current USAF and PLAAF are all talking about distributed model enabled by unmanned drones. Swarm where a few drones carry sensors and nothing else (other than basic flight control etc necessities). A few carry payload and nothing else. A few carry electronic countermeasures and nothing else. One or two units carry satcom and do the command and control , coordinating the swarm to the orders being issued from command far away. The point isn't that "you need an equivalent drone". The point is that "you can now have a swarm with much better capabilities completely unavailable to manned platforms through extreme specialization to a single task on a single platform". This is why he's just as correct as he was when he noted that reusable rockets completely change the calculus in launching things to orbit, allowing for cheap disposable satellites to be functional. This is drone technology allowing for cheap and disposable platforms doing only one thing and networking with many other platforms that do other single things very well, to form a large coherent whole that will utterly outclass any manned platform on every level imaginable. Except getting pilots laid. P.S. This is also the "end of stealth", because stealth is best countered by combining data from multiple sensors looking at the same target from multiple directions. You can't do all aspect stealth. There will be some aspects in which aircraft will be much more visible than others, and once you combine data from multiple radars, even in the "best case" band for stealth aircraft, you will stand out against the background very well. The problem is networking all this, and before idea of many cheap unmanned platforms, this was difficult for cost reasons. F-35 already does this for example, but there's only a few of them and when they have to fly in a reasonable formation, value of this is reduced. Put similar logic on cheap drones with a lot more cheaper radars, and target is utterly screwed.

Reading this feels like you didn't even watch the video tbh. That's right going back to something from world war II to counter the latest threat. If we could get a radar on a balloon and somehow power it It could look down on the immediate areas and spot approaching low-level drones that would otherwise hide and the ground clutter. In order to power this radar presumably an electrical cable could be attached to the line tethering the balloon to the ground. Just an idea

Your saying assumes that the stats of other elements are so low that the specialist will be trash at all but one. When they might be average or even better than average in some areas. I don't want a large scale bomb involved in a dogfight for instance lol And what can you do against a jet with insane speed and an accurate targeting system. I think this was the f22 for a while.

Also imo it's not either, or. You can have both, drones and jets, and imo should have both. Combined arms. Anyway, Musk loves to talk about things, he doesn't understand, and believes his own hype, and the result are ridiculous statements like that 🤷‍♂️

Musk seems to be a big fan of Russia, so it's not surprising that his talking points come from RT, especially concerning the F-35. The Russians would be thrilled if the US stopped F-35 production...it's something they have been trying to do for years now, and Musk isn't exactly the first western shill for this. Basically, the TLDR for your video is Musk is wrong, doesn't really understand the technology but thinks he's an expert, and, sadly, many people take what he says on faith.

It would strengthen the US if the def. budget money were spent on something else. That's what's funny about it. The US shills are destroying themselves. As Russia doesn't have to do anything with it. Russia just needs to stay back lol. You guys are literally destroying the US from within with those wrongful statements. Because area completely clueless LOL. Painting a picture the exact opposite of the reality, and doing so aggressively destroys the US (hence why the founding fathers liberalism, which is now gone, was always the saviour of the US in the past lol... Complex drones have the same issues as complex planes or missiles . They are slow to produce . As for drones being easy to shoot down -- currently there are some unidentified drone swarms on the US east coast ... , and apparently it's illegal to shoot them down, as legally they're under the same classification as small planes like the Cesna.

The problem in the current irl meta is that something like shahed kamikaze drone is so cheap you can build thousands if not tens of thousands of them for the price of one jet. This means in a war a country could simply fire an insane swarm of drones that would wipe out all military equipment if not all humans in the target country long before any jets can take off and mount a counter attack which would still not do even a fraction of the damage.
