I moved to Montreal 3 years ago, this is by far the most beautiful and warming place I have ever lived in, everything about this place makes me want to stay for a long time. The Montrealers specially are really friendly people, I have never felt judged or unsafe in this city, and the way life is threated here is quite interesting and comfortable. Montreal is a city that tells you that life is pretty, that we can do the right things as society, and that no matter how hard it can get we have enough time to enjoy ourselves and help each other. You can sense the community on the air, the desire of improving and loving each other, its just magical. French is an amazing languague , and living here gets you the chance to sumerge deep into it. Just walking around the city is enough to understand what I am saying. what else can I say Montreal has problems as any other city in the world, but in my experience as an 21 years old immigrant in this city has been incredible, and I love every part of it. I love Montreal, and if you are thinking about moving here, go take the chance and we will be waiting for you with a warm Bonjour and a poutine à la québécoise!!!

Just try to say a few words in French and they get all encouraging and say really nice words about your practice. Thanks to them, I now can speak three languages (my mother tongue, English, and French). I totally understand why they want to preserve their language. For the longest time, they had been second class citizens in Canada, including in their own province. They were the majority in Quebec and they couldn't go anywhere career-wise if they didn't speak English. They were called names and were always looked down upon. They have been hurt a lot and we need to show them respect. All in all, I am truly happy to be here and am grateful for all the genuine support I got from the Quebecois. Merci beaucoup Quebec!!!!!

I've lived in Montreal all my life and I lived in that exact area for 9 years (just up on cote st catherine and mt royal on the corner). It's a paradise to be honest, but some stuff is really hard to do. While I could write 100000 points of why the area is awesome, here are some unexpected things you should think about. 1. Owning a car is a no go, don't do it, parking is a true real life nightmare. 2. Pets are not allowed in every building so get them at your own risk. Especially big ones. 3. It can be *very* loud at night, like fireworks loud, (I love that aspect of the area but some might hate it). 4. Cost of living is high-ish in the plateau and it's likely you'll spend more money than you expect every single time you leave your house. A normal hangout will cost you every time (it's just a cultural thing lol). 5. You'll never ever ever buy a property there, so stop fantasizing about it! 6. Language is generally not an issue in this area at all, you can speak english 100% of your life in the plateau and be fine. However the provincial government hates that and wants that to end and is going to throw the baby out with the bathwater to end it. 7. People are pretty busy in this area (city-life style) and you won't get suburbs level of small talk with randoms (outside of your regular barista/cashiers). I chalk this up to the language barrier in the city causing an awkward effect "they won't understand me anyway" so a lot of people avoid talking in public. Since moving to an English burb in Montreal I've really noticed a huge difference with public small talk. It's funny cause I'm 100% bilingual, but this still is a strange thing in the area. 8. You prolly won't live there forever :( With all this said I still recommend it. As I said, it's paradise, a fantasy land. I wish I could live there again but next stage of life happened.

The hostess at Bagel St-Viateur is obviously from France, not from Quebec. (just an observation, not a critic)

I was born in Montreal and lived there until I was about 40. I often miss it... until I go back. I love the people and the atmosphere, but I don't miss the traffic (especially since I often have to go down Decarie...) or virtually every street being one-way in the direction you don't want to go. It's also a bit sad to me how the West Island, where I grew up, is changing. When I was a kid, there was a farm across from where I lived where there were horses... Now everything is asphalt and condos. Despite that, I think I will always call Montreal "home" even if I don't live there anymore.

I was born and raised in Montreal and I have to mention an important warning for people coming in. Canadians are polite but not at all friendable. They nurture many stereotypes towards strangers, are shy and tend to hide what they really think. I used to be like that but after living abroad in Europe I got to develop some manners you won’t find here.

Montreal is no different to other cities, there is a housing crisis. The prices have shot up and many young people will never be able to afford to buy a house. And the cost of renting is also more expensive, if you can find an apartment to rent.
@Angel_AuraaАй бұрын
Yeah I don't think young people will be able to buy in Montreal more than any other city. 😅 Maybe just rent a tiny bit easier.

But Montreal is still one of the most affordable big cities in Canada.

I live in Halifax and the rent has absolutely skyrocketed in the past 5 years. In my opinion it’s one of, if not the best city in Canada, but lacks the services that one would expect when paying so much. Montreal is really amazing too as I’ve visited a couple times, and I’m actually learning French right now (In part motivated by the fact that I’m of French-Canadian origin). I hope to maybe move to MTL one day!!

Je suis en train d'apprendre le français pour déménager au Québec. J'habite actuellement à Ottawa. Mais ça pourrait difficile de trouver un emploi avec un niveau français intermédiaire.
