Reggae is something that gets reborn in the Philippines in every generation. I remember going to B-side in Makati and Cubao Expo where the reggae underground scene was thriving. A lot of original music too not just covers, but they rarely go mainstream, some bands have 1 hit song that breakthrough but majority stay within the niche.

Filipinos have been into reggae since the 70's with folk artists/bands like Lolita Carbon's Asin, Sampaguita and the like. And every decade has it's own breakout reggae artists (80s-90s-00s Tropical Depression, Cocojam, Indio I, Reggae Mistress, Brownman Revival, Junior Kilat and the Cebu reggae scene-to name a few). What you're seeing now is just a resurgence or the younger crowd getting into it. And being a tropical country, the vibes just comes naturally :)

You'd be surprised, but Reggae is a thing especially in the provinces or areas with heavy island/beach lifestyle. I would say it's that sound that resonates really well with the Filipinos in the islands. Not too much in the big cities but the indigenous/tribal Island sound definitely suits well with reggae and even ska. You'd see somewhat the same type of instruments or similar sounding instruments already available and it just translates well. Not sure for those coming from different parts of the Philippines, but that's at least true to my experience. I've lived in Cebu and Northern Mindanao. Both definitely has some reggae following.

Reggae was first played by Cocojam in the early 80s, they then produced the very first reggae album of the Philippines. Reggae was confined around this band and their followers. Around the same time a nascent Filipino punk scene was emerging. Drawing inspiration from the friendly relations between punk and reggae in the UK and the popularity of The Clash which uses a lot of reggae in their songs, local boys from the punk scene made side projects. The vocalist of local punk band Betrayed named Dominic Gamboa, experimented with ska and formed the band Skalawags in the mid 80s. Around this time college boys were listening to The Police's white man's reggae. By the tail-end of the 80s, Dominic Gamboa changed his name to Papa Dom and went full on reggae with his band Tropical Depression. Around the same time, kids from UP Cebu formed a band called RAW BELIEF. These kids managed to have a local hit at Cebu's Y101 radio.
