About the names "Suomi" and "Finland". Linguists think a quite probable explanation is that Finns loaned word *zeme (lowland) from Proto-Baltic language, and it evolved into forms: Häme, Suomi, Saame/Sabme. Also, why is Finland called as "Finland" in other languages? The idea that word swamp could be related to Finland, is because Proto-Germanic *fanja means swamp, and "Fenne" in descending Old German and Old Frisian for example. It could be an explanation for the word Finland, but it is a very doubtful explanation, that Finns would have translated this old German name, and adobted the translated name (swamp land = suo maa) for their land and people. There are other explanations for "Finland". It may be of the same root as the name "Wenden/Winden" (Wends in English, the Slavs), coming from Old German wanderer (fendo), meaning people who migrated place to place (Finns practiced slash-and-burn agriculture (kaskeaminen) at this era, burning forest, farming it, and moving to another location repeating the same). The name of the Slavic land was called Wendland/Vendland and Windland/Vindland, and also the Germanic tribe Vandals come from this word for wanderers. For Germans of that age, a difference between Finns and Slavs wasn't clear at all, but they knew these people did not speak a Germanic language. Another interesting thing about "Suomi". The Neolithic Stone Age *zeme name and its Proto-Finnic own-name, probably also included the land and people south side of the Gulf of Finland (modern Estonia) but later they adobted another name. Häme is a historical Province in Southern Finland, that in historical era included most of Finland, except Lapland and the south-western coast, and the people "hämäläiset" are one of the three ancient (at least from Iron Age) Finnish tribes. Suomi earlier meant only the south-western coast, and people living that land are another of the three ancient Finnish tribes. (The third tribe are the Karelians, who at ancient era lived east from modern Finland.) Today Suomi mens the whole nation of Finland and suomalaiset all of her people. Saame (Finnish form), Sabme (Northern Sami form) is Lapland and the language of the people living that land. The Sami language is a relative of Finnish language. Ethnically, they are not a Finnish tribe.

Hi Sun Moose. Yeah, I was told the same in the university in the 90's. Now it seems Häme is the only one one that comes from the zeme (better: zheme, there should be a dot ovet the z meaning it's like zh, the French J, or English way to say Taj Mahal). Or maybe Sámi, Sabme too. Suomi would come from Cóma (tsjooma). But they don't know for sure - even the meaning of it. But like you said: originally it meant the tribe and their lands around Turku, Salo, Eura about. So what's now called Finland Proper. I personally think that the tsjóma would develop to Suoma, and the meaning could be the verb suoda, suoma (to allow, to allot). The motivation would be the Given (land), whoever they thought had given it, but being polytheists, they likely thanked their gods for the lands in this hypothesis. It wouldn't be so odd: the medieval map showing Swedes conquering Finland have drawn a figure of man a top a pillar - which would most likely be one of their gods - and the highest divinity is then a good guess, more probable than others. Though polytheistic religions usually had like a local divinity thought to be a protector of certain city, village or tribe etc. At least so im Hellenistic and Roman cultures. Well, the christian versions speaking a lot of saints have given the same roles to their saints. Whichever of them then would e saints in the eyes of God. The original Apostles and Paul are good choices of course. Just Bible doesn't encourage such behaviour - seems more like the old polytheistic practice was just rebranded. In southwest Finland that pillar under the image of their alleged god was called sammas (plural sampaat). This is where te place name Samppalinna in Turku comes from: it's the way the local dialect would say 'sampaan' - like hammas: hampaan (genitive/accusative) is there hamppa(n).

Just clearing up.. So there's a chance you can lose your bicycle by someone stealing it, if you leave it unguarded. But the chance someone tries to rob it from you (with violence or threatening to be violent) is very low. I think it's pretty usual to use those two words in Finland like they would be the same thing, but they are legal terms, and their meaning is not the same. Don't know how they are used in English language, so just in case someone understood it the wrong way.. stealing bicycles is a problem in here, robbing them, not so much at all. Great vid again Aleksi. I don't even know why I'm watching these as a Finnish person living in Finland, but I just like your style.

My Finnish grandmother told me I wasn't a true Finn because I didn't drink coffee. All I could think was were in Finland do they grow coffee beans. That was when I was 15 years old. 40+ years later I drink coffee every day. If I don't drink it I get a very bad headache.

Once I was going through my mom's photo album and found a picture I didn't remember being taken of me. She said it wasn't me it was her. Maybe looking exactly like her made Grandma favor me. Grandma did teach me how make Finnish bread flavored with cardamom which we called biscuit.

Here's a confession of me : i'm an autist-Asperger person and i think Finland would be the best country for me to live for . In real life i'm a reserved person, i enjoy solitude moment in the middle of the night and not being surround by the crowd, for just being with my two cats. I'm a "cold" person but once people get to know to me i'm a pretty chill and can be goofy at times. I'm also a pessimist person cause i always say : i always faced pretty bad stuff like humiliation due to my handicap from my 12 to 20 years old , in reality and virtually, so everything can happen to me , it can be bad stuff i'm really use to and never let my guard off. I also like dark humor wich is my favorite one. I watched a lot the Moomins when i was a kid and also Fifi Longstockings :)! I don't give to "friends' i know many hugs and like them when they respect my habits : taking off their hat in my house, shoes, not coming to me nearly too much :)! So Finland would be a second place i'd gladly call home one day!

I think Norway is the one who are to afraid to leave NATO, because of Russia. And i have a feeling that Denmark might have a challenge when it comes to bicycles and booze(because alcohol are cheap down there)😂 I have heard it was a area between norway and denmark, that was a part of Denmark. For the "football is bad because of army" thing I have to say that is BS. I don't know where that "study", or whatever it was, came from, but we use the same system on all nationally notified leagues (yes even low level football ones that no one cares about). If that was the reason we would have the same problem with every sport. It's way more likely that we just don't care about football that much so kids just don't go for football careers. For ice hockey you can have a profitable career if you are good enough. For football you have to be good enough to get out of Finland if you want to make some money.

I think football is suffering for two great reasons: long winter, and low population to have the best talents nicely distributed to many sports. Ice hockey gets the best talents, especially in team sports. Then there are the locally strong sports, like some areas are Finnish baseball centers, or football & basketball, handball, floorball maybe already too. And yet some areas may still be strong in individual sports, especially the sparsely populated areas. After ice hockey the local sports teams with good organization, like a whole village behind 'our team', 'our boy/girl' has a great impact in this small a nation.

It's not from suomaa, that's more like kitchen philosophy. Remember, Suomi only meant the area around Turku first - and that's not the most swampy area in Finland. And the idea of Finland the size it's now didn't even exist when the name was made. The verb suoda (in the form suoma) is a more likely source.

@@AleksiHimself But not very likely - I stated the reason. I studied Finnish in the university as my major. Where you can sea it's a modern assumption, is that it alleges the name meaning the whole country. But Suomi,, Suome, Suoma (Soome, Sooma) meant originally just the Southwestern Finland. And that is not a very swampy land. Plus the long vowels don't usully shorten to collapse as one with some other word - like here the verb form suoma. I'm not saying that the verb is the origin of Suomi. Though I personally think it the most likely. But that's no proof. Yet there's proof enough to say that suomaa is a the least likely version of those suggested. And that's what urban legends etc. tend to spread as a 'fact'. It looks like the easy answer, but it's based on the surface browsing of people not knowing the history of Finnish language with its sound change patterns etc. So it's the option taken in a whim without studying. It's as deep as trying to gain muscles by tanning the skin. So it should be mentioned mainly as the last curious surface level look of things, with a doubt cast on it, making the great public (like outside of Finland) not to pick that as the first choice. It's like the 'fast food choice'. We're now so careful and conscious in Finland what we eat - that the same should be applied in scientific sources!

+Maksym Frantsuzov The ancient roots of the Scandic Mountains geologically extend to Denmark, I think. Or the peninsula of Denmark is made up from gravel deposits from earlier erosion that has its geologic origins shared with the Scandic Mountains, something like that. But you can also look at it culturally. One can define the Scandinavian nations as those mainland countries which share a language derived from Old Norse. And they were originally ruled by royal families descended from rulers of the mainland Viking kingdoms in the territory.

During the Cold War, when NATO was formed, many of the NATO countries would not have trusted Finland, because of its historical ties to Russia. Finland may not have officially been in the Warsaw Pact but was generally assumed to be friendly to Russia. That has all changed since the curtain came down, of course, and a number of formerly-Eastern-bloc countries have joined NATO. But at the same time, most of the motivation for NATO membership has evaporated: joining at this point is sort of a "me too, me too, I'm a Western country too", and I think Finland has less to prove than e.g. Romania.

I doubt historic ties to Russia were the problem, as most countries/territories bordering the USSR had ties of some sort, and the US & other NATO powers wanted as many allies as possible against the USSR, *especially* ones close to the Soviet border. I was told that Finns, to keep from having to join the Warsaw Pact or from triggering another invasion, declared themselves neutral. At the time, it was the best way to keep sovereignty. Neutral countries don't join NATO.

About the football, the military service is also obligatory in Brazil, and... our football is among the best in the world. But here kids play football on any squares or in the gardens of their homes every day, and also at school, for boys. I played with my brothers, cousins and neighbours when I was a kid. I believe it’s a cultural thing. Probably you treasure other sports much more than football, or prefer to spend time on sauna instead of practicing sports! Do you have some video about sports that finnish people love? I’m curious about winter sports... even here in Curitiba (the coldest capital in Brazil) there’s no snow and the only places to practice ice skating in the country are artificial places in events. Last time I found one was more than ten years ago! 🙁

Do foreigners have easy access to courses of Finnish, if they come over there? I am considering going to Finland, but there are no language classes in my city that would let me prepare. About football: I think Finland is too rich to attract children to football. Since footballers can get rich fast, it's often the poor children who choose football. Brazil, Argentina, immigrants in European countries...there is a lot of poverty in there. In Finland- nobody *needs* to chase a ball just because he could be stuck in poverty his entire life. So children pick other sports instead.

I am a second generation Finn who lives in Wisconsin. I have heard there is a racist problem between "southern Finns" and Somi. The Government it is said denies some of the education support for Northern Finland. Treating southern Finns much better. Is there any truth to this. Thanks John.

Georgios Ivankof theres so many things wrong with that statement. The average net salary in Finland is about 2500€ which is after taxes. The gross salary is closer to 3500€. The most common salary is 3000€ and Finland does not have a minimum salary.

Joining NATO is not a rational decision. Finnish support for joining NATO was around 20% a year ago, and less than 40% six months ago. Such arguments based on the Russian invasion to Ukraine, are biased, irrational and only motivated for a fake sense of “security”. All those things are at the core contrary to a country to which I believed based it’s society in rationalism, careful planning and democratic solutions. It will be sad to see like in 6-7 years how Finns will be sent to die in the Pacific Ocean, or in the Middle East, defending American interests in wars not concerning Finland at all. It makes me sad to see this future Finland disappointed with a NATO that never will bring such promised peace, but on the contrary a new era of war for this Nordic country.

The reason why Finland is not part of NATO is simple, after the Second World War, the Finns were sentenced to provide soldiers to the USSR, my father, a reserve army officer Finnish, they have re-signed it twice, one for The Prague Spring in 1968 But the Finns took part in the Cold War against the Soviet block with the US Secret Service, my grandfather had been recruited by the CIA with other Finnish veterans.
