Why Is Florida’s Opioid Crisis Getting Worse?

Drug overdoses, primarily from opioids such as oxycontin and fentanyl, have doubled in Pasco County, Florida, this year. It’s one of the hidden side effects of the COVID pandemic and subsequent lockdown that has left many without the support they need during their most vulnerable moments. “They're not just dying of a COVID virus, they're dying of overdoses and they're dying of suicide ... There's a hopelessness that comes along in that moment.” Kevin lost the mother of his son to a drug overdose during the pandemic. He was also forced to close the 12-step program at his church, he says, and he feels powerless as COVID's impact tears through his community.

It's astounding how these people are able to receive housing, counseling, church, etc. yet in the 80s and 90s, black addicts were just giving to the wolves. AJ needs to do an episode comparing how black addicts were treated and the war on drugs compared to these compassionate stance on addicts now.

@Cuinn837

It was never a problem of doctors and their pain patients. The DEA are cowards; they don't want to risk themselves trying to bust cartel members. So then give doctors their rights again to treat true chronic pain patients accordingly and properly. The War On Opioids put into effect by the CDC and FDA is not working for those unfortunately who seek the medication for recreational use and now are overdosing on other mixed street drugs by drug dealers which are even deadlier.😢

Just wanted to point out that in a more socialist-oriented society, you would still be getting your dividends, you would still have your private property and your benefits, but so would everybody else. there would be good quality healthcare for everybody, education for everybody and most likely a Purdue wouldn't be allowed to sell legal smack in the name of profit. For-profit correctional institutions are morally unacceptable and I just can't understand how people just accept these social issues and keep going.

thank you for amplifying these small, forgotten voices. seems like all the things i thought were helping fight the pandemic were hurting these people. really making me think harder about what i believe and preach! thanks for the reality check! i really wish that the 2020 presidential candidates were talking about ANYTHING that would help any of us...

most detox is run by non profits. this means most are religion based and insurance will cover the worst of them..but places with better success rates are thousands of dollars. and the wait lists are long, sometimes months.

Any addiction whether it's drugs, alcohol, nicotine, food is either a psycological or chemical disorder. The psycological end of this comes from life's traumas. It's a way to temporarily escape harsh realities, for the short run ; for the long run you only add to your problems.No need for drugs, a psycologist will help.. If it's a chemical disorder, that's another ball game which one would need psychiatrists to help you get out of this using other drugs. In ALL addictions, prayer is the number one weapon
