The question should have been "Why Is Islam Misunderstood?" Not just in the west. In the east and middle-east too. Whatever Dr. Shabir's understanding of Islam (he is sitting in the west) is not the same as another Muslim's understanding of Islam [situated in Middle-East (eg. Palestine) or in Indian sub-continent (eg. Pakistan) or in Chechnya or in Indonesia]. Not all Muslim's have the same understanding of Islam. Islam is not monolithic and is practiced differently and feels different in every part of the world, what to say of the understanding in the west? With all due respect, Dr. Shabir's answer is not complete and projects as if Islam is understood by every Muslim in one right way but west understands it differently. That is not true.

Look at 42,000 denominations in Christianity. Organized religion will never make it monolithic. Since 2008 Israel has killed more than 150,000 Palestinians including 33000 children. Nobody expressed any sympathy. What's happening now is only the reaction of actions by Israel. Jewish people were a few after the world war. Hitler had killed them all. They needed refuge and Muslims in Palestine gave them refuge. With the passage of time, these Jews were manipulated and brainwashed by Christians (especially Europeans and Americans) They were given weapon, power. They illegally kept a piece of land which belonged to Palestinians. Jerusalem is wanted by Muslims, Christians and Jews because for all of them that is a holy city. Christians cannot take it or conquer it from Muslims. So they have been using Jews as pawns. They will let Jews have the Jerusalem and then take it from them. At the time of Crusades, Christians killed uncountable Jews. Remaining ones were wiped out by Hitler. It's true that Jews were once rightly guided and chosen people by God but they kept rejecting, insulting many Prophets of God including Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad (peace be on both of them). Jews killed a Prophet called John (Yahya) then they tried to kill Jesus and then they tried to Killed Prophet Muhammad.

So, I disagree with their methods. I was born Catholic. When I became Muslim I did it through philosophical & scientific reasons. Not by imposition or by any compulsion of a group. Not applauding Israel either, but we shall not fall to passion. Islam is the state of submission to Allah SWT. Fulfilling the ultimate purpose of life. The opposite of Islam is kufr or denial. Of course being Muslim puts one above the deniers. Muslims didn't makeup these terms they're from the Qur'an. This concept is a core part of Islam and has nothing to do with apologetics. I really struggle to wrap my head around this objection. If Muslims were to believe, as it seems you would like them to, that all people are equal regardless of their faith then why would they proclaim Islam as truth? I believe that Non-Muslims won't enter heaven and are condemned to eternal hellfire for their disbelief. This is what the Qur'an and Sunnah teach. It's impossible for me to believe that a path that leads to hellfire is equal to one that leads to paradise.

We need to look more in translating the Quran which conventional translation did not do and hence increasing misunderstanding through our bad conduct.
