First and the basic thing is in an internal combustion engines fuel and air is mixed with proper ratio to get productive combustion which starts with intake of air fuel mixture then compression of the mixture which is ignited in S.I or pre-ignited in C.I engine before expansion stroke and flue gases are driven away through exhaust.
Actually for proper combustion of fuel, require a sufficient amount of oxygen. That's used to generate a sufficient heat. Air’s composition by volume contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.
Oxygen present in air is used to burn fuel and the reaction is exothermic and the same energy gets converted to mechanical energy by linkages..
Hence presence of air or particularly oxygen is very much required to get from combustion engines.
