The high costs of demolition because of city rules, reminds me of California imposing ever stricter rules for new housing construction (with the mandatory installation of solar panels being the newest rule.) The population is then surprised when the costs of building a new home is skyrocketing. Weird how that works, isn't it?

Crooks! America has some of the lowest landfill taxes in the Western world. Fuel is cheap and I bet labour costs in Detroit are cheap too. There is no way such works could even cost 10k. I worked in demolition and demolished brick houses in less than a day and removed rubble off site. It doesn't take 3 days to make the place look good again, even with excavation and soil back-fill. Costs are higher because the demolition site is sprayed with water? Are you kidding me? How much does water cost in Detroit? Is it metered? Furthermore, if its coming from a hydrant, I doubt that anyone checks the amount of water that got used. Someone in Detroit is making a lot of money. And I bet it's a mayor and those who work for him or with him. It's such a shame that such problems exist in modern day America...

if you tear down a home its probably because it's in bad shape. So the family can't come together to fix it or the person that owns it can't afford it. Doesn't make sense to tear the home down. Why does a city not take the home over like they would with homes that have tax fees or liens attached to them and sale them? If they could not afford taxes and repair for 4-10 years what makes you believe they will be able to pay and should pay $10,000-$20,000 for a demo? Also it looks just as bad when there are vacant lots in a city. Some of the things people do that they think they are helping the great good they are really not unless they are getting kick back. So they are tearing down homes and using tax money that is set aside from tax payers money. It should be placed in News papers and on the local news the break down and they bids that were placed. Since it's tax payers money.

Pay people in the city to demolish these houses and that will save money and get the people not working in the city to work. Just an idea.

Historic preservation pays!!!!!! Don't demolish the large stately homes!!!! The houses to be demolished, people and volunteer's should be able to go in and strip the house of any good materials for salvaging and helping to restore other homes in Detroit. But again typical Detroit. I guess nothing has changed in that respect.
