Well to be fair, the name Mega Man makes no sense in the west with the original design of Mega Man, which is a kid. Heck in one version of concept art, he was gonna be called Rock Kid instead of Rock Man. So the art was beefed up to make him look more macho. BUT it's so poorly done and phoned in. My guess is Capcom wasn't taking it seriously enough in the US. Let's face it. The first Mega Man wasn't the best game in the series. Nobody even expected it to get sequels. Mega Man II actually had 2 different box arts in the US. That shows some more effort. It got better from MM3 onward.

While I prefer the Japanese box art for a lot of games, I actually like the logo-centric art for the Zelda series her in North America. It kinda feels like they're covers to books of ancient legend when the series follows that pattern.

Might I also suggest throwing in a few PAL boxes? They aren't as good as the Japanese ones usually, but they're WAY different.

Caddicarus made a comparison video between NTSC and PAL, it's pretty neat.
@WJCTechyman3 жыл бұрын
Peebs, you can play Super Famicom games on your North American SNES. You just remove two pieces of plastic in the cart slot. The systems are identical, tech spec wise. It's a bit more complex between NTSC and PAL games though, since those ran two completely different resolutions, refresh rates and internal clock speeds.
@mattb65223 жыл бұрын
It is really interesting that a lot of Japanese box art during the NES through N64 era had a more artistic flair compared to the American versions. The American box art just seems like a by-the-numbers template (especially the back of the box) and doesn't have the same design punch as the Japanese ones.

it's interesting to me the different design senses and aesthetic between japanese and western graphic designers. western box art is more nostalgic to me, but a lot of the japanese box art looks a lot more thought out to me and aesthetically pleasing to older me? Like, I actually prefer the windwaker gold box art because it's maybe my favourite childhood gamecube game and looking at the cover sparks fuzzy nostalgia feels within me when i see it.
@leonbabic71853 жыл бұрын
I do like the western art as well, and not just because of nostalgia. But I like the japanese Wind Waker box art just way more. It perfectly encapsulates the design of the game, and it elevates the emotional impact that game has on me when I see it.

Chrono Trigger has to be one of the best examples of this. The Japanese art is just the whole crew looking great in their Toriyama style. The American art, while very iconic, is completely wrong in that Marle uses water magic, not fire. That art came from an original demo screenshot when Marle was seen using fire instead of ice. Also, the Japanese box is another pure white background.
@wesnohathas19933 жыл бұрын
It's not entirely inaccurate as Marle's magic actually does look more like fire in-game when using the triple tech that is illustrated on the box art.

Especially the NES, where Japanese and many PAL covers had colorful anime style covers, while North American covers were often so 'Merica (Hammerin' Harry) or just plain weird (Mega Man). During the 5th generation Western companies demanded everything be 3D in and out of the game, causing most to age poorly, while Japan continued the trend of great 2D covers that I still love to this day.

There's actually another version of the Japanese Majora's Mask box. The one Peebs has is actually the later revised one. Originally, the game was released in japan as two versions, a Limited big box version with an expansion pak included, and a regular one. Both had different box art. (The big box actually just contained the normal box, plus an expansion pak, so you actually got both pieces of art.) The bundle version had the same art as the revised regular edition that Peebs has, but without the giant expansion pak disclaimer. The original regular edition had Link riding on Epona instead. Later on, they stopped printing the bundle version, and they changed the regular box art to the bundle versions' instead. Also, both original boxes just had a tiny expansion pak disclaimer in a corner on the front. When Nintendo changed the art for later print runs, they added that GIANT disclaimer for clarity. Majora's Mask was the most, and the only really popular expansion pak game in Japan. Nintendo probably got more than a few complaints at the time from customers who didn't realize they needed the pak until they got home and tried to play the game. So they added that new and improved impossible to overlook disclaimer banner. Made the box uglier though.

What K.K. is saying on the front of the Japanese Animal Crossing box is related to the general theme of the front of the box, which is pushing the added (multiplayer) features. I'm assuming this is because in Japan this was technically the second release of the original Animal Crossing game, the first being on the N64. K.K. is saying "two people are better than one", which is the first line of the text above his head, which reads "Two people are better than one, four people are better than two, a lot are better than four." The text over Kapp'n's head basically said "All sorts of things were added in the plus version."
