I dont get it. People see something they dont understand and almost automoatically write it off as lazy and 'easy to make.' there arnt any rules or restrictions when making art and that's the beauty of it. Idk bout yall but I think this narrow idea of what makes art good is helpful to anyone. Make what you want to make because it makes you feel emotion. Sure a Renaissance painting might look cool but god damn it sure is boring

tl;dr one identifier of "art" is invoking emotion, and seeing a banana taped to a wall certainly invokes some passionate emotions. Not dissimilar from good villains being ones you absolutely hate, because a bad villain is one that doesn't make you feel anything.

I think a lot of people get confused by the title "modern art", modern art is art generally a style from the period of the the 1860s - 1970s/80s. The style often appears simplistic but sometimes can be rather labour intensive. Sometimes it is simple and not intensitve. The purpose of the style is a rejection of the eras of art which came before it, things like renaissance, and neoclassical. Often it is appears simple because it asks the question "what is considered art", is it about the output, the process, the time to make, or can simply anything be consdiered art. When saying "modern" if you are refering to art made in this current era, usually itd be considered post-modernist (a rejection of modernism which often goes further into abstraction) or more accurately contemporary art. Most of the art you show in the video, and especially from Pollock is specifically abstract expressionism (a sub category of modern art). The reason for so much social importance being placed on these works was that at the time when they were made, the pieces were consdiered revolutionary. This style of art had not come to the forefront of public consciousness before. Certainly now, this can be considered an oversaturated style now, but when they were made, not at all. Maybe the sub-style is just not your piece of cake, but im sure theres hundreds of other modern arts you'd like such as Picaso, Debuffet, or Emily Carr. The purchase of the Banana however, 100% gotta be for a tax write off.

gang i hate to say it but its called 'conceptual art' for a reason, these fellers create art not because its supposed to look great or has 'talent' but because it inspires emotion or asks a question, i also think its insulting to say that pollocks art wasn't labour intensive, these are HUGE canvases and they are COVERED in huge gobules of paint, polluck would spend months on these. sometime modern art doesnt take months but at least it means something. inspires feeling, the only art i think about months after seeing it is modern art. just looking cool is great but its not like it is worth anything more than a 'oh alr'
