Very interesting. Not a music-nut myself but this is at just the right level to keep me interested :) I have mentioned this before, and perhaps you can't change it for a while due to having filmed episodes earlier, but I find the reflection in your glasses (a green square/screen) really distracting. I usually wouldn't complain about that sort of thing, but I find with these videos I really have to listen and think (which is good, just distractions aren't!). Not sure if this is the case for others though, but thought you might like to know anyway.

I think I had to do an exercise in a music class at some point- possibly electronic music- where I had to make up my own notation and I remember using a spiral but don't really remember what it represented.

Nice Video! It bothers me that in Traditional Notation, the same note-pitch can take different positions on the pentagram.

I sang in a renaissance choir in college and that music was rough when I was first starting out. I think adapting to it ultimately made me a better musician, though. Also alto clef is dumb why do we have it

Movable C (Alto Clef is one, but there are four others) is the most common for Renaissance music because it was well-adapted for voices. Before ledger lines, it was important to keep your entire vocal range within the staff, so by changing where C is, you can suit the staff better to the voice type you're writing for. It wasn't really until ledger lines and keyboard music took off that the G clef (now called treble) and F clef (now bass) gained popularity.

Why dont we just listen and then sing it right? Thats what i did in choir for six years 😭 also, you can do that with instruments as well if you play it enough. Sounds silly to me that we write it down

Standard musical notation sucks. It only accounts for a little over half the notes, the rest needing special notation (for no particular reason, other than to screw everyone but piano players I guess, even then, C# major...), it requires triple translation (position of circle to note to action on instrument, whereas all other languages use double translation), it requires going above or below the clefs for most notes, particularly on super high and super low instruments, it gets really crowded if things are fast, on and on and on. I swear more kids have quit an instrument because of music notations flaws than there are people alive over 60. I’m a private music teacher, and I downright refuse to teach standard music notation, despite knowing how to read it and parents concerned about their kid learning it. It hinders the learning potential of students, discourages them from playing, and dissuades them from learning theory (how many of the high school band kids know what the 4th mode of the major scale is? I’d bet 5%). It’s a garbage system and needs to be scrapped for a universal system which everyone can read, along with instrument specific notation (guitar tabs and the like). The only positive thing I can say about standard music notation is it has rhythm notated well. That’s it.
