You could also retune or even overtune the cab and chassis, and they give you the room to customize and do what you want on the rails

I'll take that compliment all day! haha. But yes, sadly Ford is the only one that does it. Im really not sure why, I wish RAM did as well. Its a large reason a lot of people go with the 450. Its the ultimate HD pickup.

One major downside to running the pickups is the 65ft length laws and even shorter in some states. Cab and chassis truck without any cargo carrying area is considered a tractor/power unit and you're good up to 75 ft just like the big trucks. Most 40 footers will put you over 65 ft with a crew cab long bed pickup hooked to it. Tow Piglet specifically used Big Tex trailers because they have shorter 8 foot necks that just barely squeak you under that limit (not because they're the best trailers or anything) where as most of them have something closer to a 9 foot neck. This has nothing to do with CDL vs non-CDL.

I know GM detunes their medium duty trucks for longevity. GM uses the same L5P foundation, but calls it a L5D with a lower tune and smaller turbo. I don't think the lower power rating is necessarily a bad thing, but a factory bed would be nice.

Love the info on the 450. My question to you is what exactly is the gear setup on your truck? Are they all the same in the 450? I’m looking into doing hotshot and want to get the best set up. Fuel mileage doesn’t much bother me if I’m set up the way I need to be. I’d love a shirt as well!

All 450 pickups are strictly 4.30 gears. No option for anything else. If you’re running cdl the 450 dominates based on mostly facts.

Prolly not the best to Hotshot with because once you are on the road, you want the mpg….as best as I can tell the 4.30s with the 10 speed seem to even pull hills fine when loaded. IMHO unless you are heavy pulling on a farm or something the 4.30s are fine BUT just wanted to let you know that 4.88s are avail.

If you go without the bed you can register the truck as a tractor TR and pull longer trailers and be legal instead of it being registered as TT truck trailer

Great video man. Good info. It’s a hard sell for me. The 3.55 gears in a 350 sits around 1600 rpm at 65mph. I’m about to order and the 450 is sweet but man, I wish they would offer 3.73 gears.

My dodge sits at 2000 rpm at 60 mph and anything over 60 tanks my fuel mileage at 55 to 60mph towing 8000lbs I get about 18.5 mpg

One thing to mention… cab and chassis, you CAN NOT, Insure them on a personal auto policy. This being said, if you buy a cab and chassis, you have to go straight to commercial insurance policy. This sucks for people who don’t want to start a business right away, but want to purchase the truck. Personal auto, won’t insure vehicle with a gvwr of 16k and greater. Info straight from Geico, other insurers may be more accepting. I was trying to purchase a ram 5500 cab chassis. The good thing about the ford f450 pickup is the weight is 14k gvwr.

I beg to differ my friend. I run a 2020 F450 with a BigTex 14GN in a NON-CDL setup. The trucks GVWR is 14,000 lbs. and the trailer is derated to 12,000 lbs. so the GCWR is 26,000 lbs. That is NON-CDL so it can be done. But I do agree the F450 is the best CDL and NON-CDL truck there is!!

The F600 was designed to "cheat" the increased costs of the F650. Yes you can stay under by weight, but you could not pull a 40 ft trailer with it as you would be over length. And the more truck you have the less load you can haul. Everything has a trade off.

People should know this is a non CDL Truck. CDL is only required to dive this truck towing a trailer that puts your GVW over 26000# . Ford list this truck as weighing 8,587# and GVW is 16000# so the difference is approximately 10000#, without a CDL you can tow a trailer 10000# or less. Love your truck. I have a f550 and wouldn't trade it for anything.

I'm investigating trucking as a new career. I have a couple questions for experienced people, if anyone cares to chime in. First, how come it seems like nobody talks about Chevy's for hotshot? Seems like it's Ford or Dodge. Second, if you're going CDL anyway, why go with an f450 or one of these medium duty pickups and not go with a medium duty semi, like a Freightliner FL70 or something? I mean, I guess brand new the Freightliner would be a lot more expensive but it seems like a used one in good shape might be better than a new pickup truck since they are actually built for long term, everyday load hauling?

There shouldn’t be much difference if at all in the RPMs between a F350 with 4:10s and a F450 with 4:30s the taller tire on the F450 equals it out to the 17s on the F350 pretty much the same ratio. F350 17” tires and the F450 19.5s.

The best truck for cdl is something like freightliner m2 with ten speed handles the weight like a boss and more importantly it has air brakes to stop the load those little trucks cannot handle the everyday abuse I tried it bigger is usually better

@@jonathanhudson9189 Yup, first time I had a flat(semi truck) and required road service the guy showed up in a standard service truck and just the rubber tire. My first thought was this is not right no tire machine to mount the tire on the rim then he pulled out that tire bar stripped the ratted up casing off my rime popped the new casing on the wheel and was done in about 15-20 min flat. This methode was just as fast maybe even faster. Also really simple process. In all actuallity less back breaking, if you have ever lifted wheels on and off a tire machine you know they are pretty dang heavy and this way you never have to lift the tire and wheel together. Just had to stand on the tire and rock back and fourth with beed soap/lube spray to get it to grab a beed. Once inflated roll it back over to the lugs and bucle it all up. I was thoroughly entertained learning that trick. ,However the reality for me is being fat, old and slightly less than motivated I don't mind feeding the economy and letting a stronger young buck earn a little scratch. I can't take it all with me so I pay for tire changes and I get to keep my hands clean.

The chassis cabs are detuned because of their payload capacity. Chassis cabs nearly double the payload on an 450 with the bed.

I would suggest that the “F-450 pickup” really should have been called an F-375. It has a lower cargo capacity than the “F-350 pickup” at the expense of better towing. But it’s GVWR is the same as the 350. The heavier tires and brakes actually l cause a reduction in cargo capability. Yes. It’s a good looking pickup, but at the end of the day is still a class 4 truck with an attempt at some clever marketing (F-450 must be better than a F-350 -right?!) I’m looking for a pickup to build into an overlander; the F-450 chassis cab meets my requirements but the F-350 and F-450 pickups do not.

Ford is ok but For towing nothing beats ram with Cummins and aisin combo. Ram also has air suspensions because they know people tow with ram. If only ram made a 4500 in pickup

The only way to get air on the 4500/5500 is the ambulance package and that's not something you just simply find. I'm a big fan of both brands but right now ford is just the better truck.

There is a $10,000 difference in price. We run 2 F550s with the 6.8 gas engine and bought both for the price of one F450 Diesel. He gas engine is far less expensive for repairs and maintenance an has the same towing capacity as the F450 Diesel. We use a tuner to increase power output that is only slightly less than the Diesel. They stopped production of the 6.8 in 2013, but the 7.3 gas is now available. The new gas 7.3 F550 cost the same as the Diesel F450.

@willl 77 Average fuel mileage is less than the Diesel but the repair cost are so much lower the diesel fuel mileage I not going to equal the expense of repair. We have a truck with all original drive components doing its job at over 375K. we had another F350 SRW that was ran hot at 250K miles and had to be replaced. We bought a reman and with labor was only 5200, compared to the last 08 F350 diesel engine we replaced at 300K for 12,000. That's a 2 to 1 ratio meaning I can do 700 or more miles for a diesel engine swap on my gas
