I dig Mr Maple and especially these tips. I had just purchased a Shojo Hime from a nursery last spring that was going out of business due to retirement and two days later had powdery mildew. Yikes! It survived but I was now concerned for my other 25 JM on the patio (yeah, hooked). Everything is fine but just the knowledge of what to expect, do-not do, puts me back in control instead of being reactionary. And yes, I looked up how to address the powdery mildew issue. Thanks for the tips.

I have a 10+ year old Japanese maple planted in ground. It’s started losing a lot of lower branches this last year. It makes me sad of the thought of losing it. I may need to bring an arborist out to look at it.

Great video. I recently moved my Japanese maple in the Summer here in the UK. It was really not doing well where I originally planted it and my Next Door Neighbor keeps spraying the fence with paint and he kept getting paint on the leaves. Its a smaller Japanese maple but still. I then took the idea and I went out bought a big pot with a drainage hole and some stands to put it on and re-potted it. It seemed okay for the first week but recently I have noticed its leaves are dropping off it. I'm scared its going to die. I will go out and buy the Superthrive. I did use some Acer feed in the soil when I re-plotted it as I read somewhere else they love that feed.

I have lost 3 trees out of 50 in the last 2 years. It always happens the same way, in similar leaf jm trees (lilliannes jewel, Hana matoi, and ruby de sofia). The tree will leaf out in the spring looking like it's doing well then the leafs just start wilting. I have tried fertilizer, broad spectrum antifungals, replanting in pure perlite to repair roots, but I just can't save the trees. I keep all my trees in freely draining soils with pine bark perlite and pumice.

I totally thought it need mostly shade so I planted my 3' tall JM in a shady area. When I found out it actually likes sun, I moved it now at 7' tall to a open area in my yard. The area dirt has clay, gravel and some buried concrete from a patio project so I dug down to remove as much as I could, mixed some compost into the existing soil, then more mix on top. Should get good nutrients and drainage. I can't wait to see how it does.

Love the videos and info. All of my jps are in ceramic pots and I am afraid they get to hot in the summer. I live right outside of Athens, Ga, in zone 8. I started lining my pots with thick pieces of Styrofoam and then putting the trees in the nursery pots inside the Pots, I also put rocks and mulch in the bottom of the ceramic pots and sit them on bricks to insure they drain correctly.

Hi guys, great video. I am in Hendersonville and recently bought 13 beautiful trees from you. I am paranoid about over watering or under watering. Since planting, some leaves, not excessive have turned brown. For the past few weeks we have strong dry winds, usually for a few hours in the afternoon. I have heard that these winds can be tough on the trees. Could this be contributing to some brown leaves? If so, any suggestions? Thanks

so I just planted an emperor 1, about 5' tall from a nursery container in zone 6b. I know this variety buds out later than other maples, but the buds on mine haven't really started swelling yet. I cut a small branch, and the wood was fresh, so I don't think it's dead. I planted with land and sea compost and some worm castings. any idea what's going on? watering/drought isn't the issue, at least I think.

I keep hearing to wet, but what is to wet? Like it rained 8 weeks here in Belgium (some days 16-24 hours). I know in swiss it doenst rain often but if it does it's sometimes 1-3 days with little pause and ALL the japanese maple there were healthy. My garden has a strategic 'water from terras' is not drained but goes in ground off stones into garden, same is true for garden who goes from high to low (terras is low). this is especially worth it with climate change cause in summer the plants get to few water for sure, but in winter (especially like this one), they get a lot more. The fun fact is even if it rains 24 hours hard (record rain amount), the worst that happened was 3-5cm 'water pool' the fun fact is, next morning all this water was infiltrated in ground, so a true mud it isn't. So it's not SWAMPY yet but very very dry, but i'm sure the top layer will quickly get dry once it's 20°C. So far the Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium is in the most wet part. Have no planted skeeters bloom and orange dream just a bit above it. While a little, once more roots, weeds other plants fill the garden i hope the the water draining itself will be good. When removing the old terras (much bigger and 4 generation of stone on top of each other), i saw lot of wurms, any wurm i found i trew into undigged territory to spare them (i know they are godsend for ground). Now they are still very present. I didn't give any fertilizer cause i keep hearing Acer Palmatum doesn't really need/want that. Will see. This is the most wet winter since i got garden, hope at leach march has a warm week to dry out the swamp spell.

To wet is standing water for any extended period of time. Maples die if they are holding water. Good drainage is key
@Matti6950
@Matti6950 4 ай бұрын
@@MrMapleShow'holding water', you mean the trunk or roots? For instance they love shadows, that means, ground will dry less out in summer, so chance if if you turn the ground it's actually wet. For instance, city planted a bloodgood? But it's never watered and next to heat soaking building, they both lots 33% of branches (burned out no more new leaves). These do NOT have wet feet :D Yet they are worse then my trees. So is there a splash of (permanent water), above the roots? no. Is the ground ultra wet? Yes, the boots sink 3cm in ground top layer cause to much rain. Really hard to make an estimation about this. At some point we also had non stop 30 miles an hours windspeed, (at relative warm 10°C) it didnt remove water from top layer, but it dried it out a little preventing pools or anything. In ultra hot weather (40°c record tempts here, earlier records were 36), dried out top 30cm and lower lvl also wasnt good. This is why i made this 'wadi' (dont know english word, it's a little pool where water is able to infiltrate ground and dry out at times but overflood at times too). This means once the rampage of 20-40°C for 7-9 months start, the ground will always have an amount of backup, that will get them tru biggest drought with minimal watering. The ground structure is also better, it cant crack, like in extreme situations. We'll see who's right soon. But you are kinda conflicting yourself 'it need watering' 'it needs to be dry at root level, no 'clogging', once you water or it rains, or is winter and rains, 'ground is cloggy' there is no way around, it may not be swampy but it is cloggy. If this advice was truly true lot more trees would die. Another thing, there is a well next to the japanse maples, once it's hot, this will dry out the top later faster, but the layer under that will have it's own stury layer of water supply.
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 4 ай бұрын
@@Matti6950 It’s not a complicated concept to understand. Japanese Maples do not like to be in a lot of water. They never like standing water. Roots or trunk doesn’t matter. It’s very simple. Extremely simple. Watch the video again and listen to it. Follow the advice
@Matti6950
@Matti6950 4 ай бұрын
The earth is not the problem, it's the kind garden centers like you purchase 'farm earth' we call it', After a day of rain (even 40mm or liter)/per square meter, all rain goes inside ground, so there is no lake forming. However, since it has rained 400-700mm/square meter in 3 months, it is very wet, and you sink in a little big into the ground, we need 20+°C to fix it (soon in march i think we'll get that). So far Acer aconitifolium doesn't seem to dislike it, the other two are in slightly better position (higher then from lowest position). In summer there is no way this ground will be 'to wet', it's not clay at all etc. Only fall ultra rain might be problem, but then again, wich ground can resist 1000 liter per square meter in 3 months? I don't think that's any type of 'clogging' you can fix, you keep saying clogging is something that you can fix, but except not planing next to a lake i don't think you can fix it. @@MrMapleShow

I inspect the tree about 2 or 3 times a week, still no buds. Only thing I did was fed it one food spike last summer, under the outer canopy of the leaves in the ground. The top half has turned black (maybe pseudonymous) but I have a few leaves left on the bottom that look healthy bits just leaves out, but I fear it’s planted in a poor drainage location. Water was standing there after the rain we’ve just had! Will it be better off if I lift it out of the ground and pot it up now (even though it’s already leafed out)? My father and I love Japanese maples since i was lil girl. I've purchased an old farmhouse almost 4 years ago in harrisburg, pa and have been establishing some great gardens that included maples of course. My father came to live with me here a couple years ago batteling cancer. He passed away June of last year. He picked all the maples he wanted some of his ashes in. All of them have flourished except my emmits pumpkin and my favorite... uncle ghost! 😪. I followed my nurserys direction as these were 2 were in pots. They told me i could over winter them in these pots just keep them next to the house. They survived our winter adhd had great buds ready to leaf out and then we had a week of so of frost. I didn't think anything of it and now they're still sitting doing nothing. I scratched the main stem and i seen a but of green so i was hopeful. But still nothing new in the way of growth. I did fertilize and water but nothing. What did i do wrong. It's so heartbreaking especially because a lil ofmy father's ashes were planted with them. They'r in huge urns and did well all last year. If i lose these i must buy these exact kind again

I did a scratch test, the top of the truck is green, the middle of the trunk is green but the base of the truck near the roots it’s brown. I already cut off one of the branches because it was completely brown so I’m not sure if the trees completely dead as it’s still green in the middle and the top but I don’t see any green near the root at the base of the tree, so should I just wait and see what it might do next spring or Is this tree already in the process of dying?

It has a chance to make it if the buds are healthy. Some stress is common the fist season. It may require more shade next season until it’s established. The steps you took seem all good ones. Leaves were beautiful in the spring, we had to re-sod most of our yard in the summer, my wife sprayed some “Sedgehammer” to try to get rid of it out of the tilled yard before sodding. @@MrMapleShow Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, I can’t move it, it’s a mature tree firmly rooted in one of our flowerbeds (it’s about 6’, around 8-10 years old). I went ahead and fed it about a gallon of miracle gro mix (1 granular tblspoon to 1 gal water) about a foot around the trunk, hoping for the best. I guess I’ll keep an eye out for either any signs of new growth or brittleness of limbs.

Should my Red Coral Japanese Maple - planted in April in zone 8a, be turning red already- End of May? We have heavy clay soil, but they added lots of sand to the hole.

Make sure it’s not staying to wet. If it is in more of a fall color change that can be from stress. That is typically a good time to plant but also make sure it isn’t planted to deeply

Help! I have an infestation on my bloodgood… small spiders, baby millipedes, other baby worms & aphids. My tree started blooming in early May and now those buds are dead. How can I treat the various infestations? Thank you!!! I have tried natural DE and a little bit of neem oil (bad idea).

Any suggestion of how many lbs of N a Japanese maple should get per year?

Very low. I don’t think it could even be measured in lbs for a single plant. I use a 15 or lower on the nitrogen and then as the specific fertilizer instructs.

@@Kasuev If I may, ground to ground means they are assuming your tree is not growing in a container. But was in the ground, you dug it out of the ground and replanted it back into the ground in a new location. Sometimes this is called transplanting. Also, Japanese maple trees are deciduous, like oak trees. This means that in the fall, the leaves will change color and then drop to the ground. So, after the leaves have fallen off the tree and before the new leaves begin to grow in the spring, the tree is considered out of leaf. In summary, transplant a tree in fall after the leaves have dropped, or spring before the new leaves appear and possibly winter if the ground does not freeze where you live.
