A friend thought he needed a new water heater because the pipes made noise when he took a shower. It was a loose washer on the hot water stem.

This was one of the weird ones that took me weeks to fix. The customer said that everytime she flushed her toilet, it would loudly whistle. Like a deep whistle. Time and time again I tore it apart and still couldn't figure it out. Well then I found that when the porcelain lid is formed its made from 2 pieces, so its hollow with a vent hole for the kiln process. As the tank drained it would line up with that vent hole and make a loud whistle. Filled that up with caulk and it totally went away. Keep an eye out for these guys cuz it threw me for a loop for a long time!!

My mom's house... 2 bed 1 bath. Has just started something. When mom does laundry... The laundry room is over by back of house NEXT TO KITCHEN... And the washing machine goes into spin... Drain cycle. There is a gurgling sound from kitchen sink. It has never done that before. Now the Kitchen sink seems to drain properly as does the toilet and tub and canary sink. So is this likely a clog in the sewer line OR is this likely a issue with the sewer vent pipe.... This is a HUD home and the owner is ELDERLY and don't get around to well these days. And with mom's income set... Disability... Calling a plumber will be VERY HARD TO PAY FOR. ANY ADVICE THANKS IN ADVANCE

a couple years ago the plumbing in the single floor apartment building i live in sounded like a jackhammer vs a cast iron pipe, i could feel vibrations in the floor, the dish in my sink would rattle, and at worst it caused rattling noise from the windows, it was the worst during late cold winter nights, there was no regular intervals, it was seemingly completely random, it eventually stopped and i never found out what it was. what do you think it could have been? i haven't the foggiest.

I’m a plumber in Portland Oregon. I find a whining noise in some houses when any water is run. This is generally coming from a pressure regulator. I usually have a customer run water and fluctuate the flow. I can then feel the regulator and it will be vibrating. Swap the regulator and all is good.

❤ My case would be quite complicated so let's see. I had Hafele shower panel with 3 gears- the top (as regular rain shower), side spraying, and mobile hose with shower head. The side gear has weakest flow, especially with cold water. The water came out only at the leg part, none or very small drips on upper part. My first thoughts were clogged pipes or too low pressure. I tried to fix by running boiler's descaler liquid throughout the system, turn on each valves until I smell the descaler fluid to make sure that it soakes every parts, then I let the liquid stayed inside the system for 3 hours. Some small amount of brown-orange scale came out when we later turned on the valve initially. Unfortunately, the flow is still weak so I go on next step. I bought small shower booster pump connected at precircuit. Now when we turn on the pump's electricity, the flow seems a bit stronger, but the low-pitched, vibrating noises are heard from both the top and side sprays. It's gone when I cut off the electricity. The noise is different from high-pitched screaming-like from most plumbing VDOs. I would say mine is quite similar to heart murmur. This murmurs strongly coincides with the pump, and there should not be any clogged after we did extensive descaling (hopefully) throughout the system. Not sure that these noises are because of too high pressure, too little flow (pump outlet is G1/2) or else? Other (and closer to the floor) valves in the bathroom- sink, wall, bahttub (different places) have normal flow. Thanks so much!😂

Our hammering noises vary in volume, speed and can even be heard by multiple different pipes in our basement ceiling simultaneously. It only happens with our heaters, and we have to endure it for six months every year. I sometimes have to pause what I'm watching so I won't miss anything, and just wait until it works itself out. There is no way to get used to it. The pounding stops right as the heat stops.

I paid a plumber last week $427 to change out my dual faucet handles last week. The next morning while I was taking a shower I noticed the water was pulsating and changing temperatures back and forth. Also, when I flush the toilets or run water in my sinks it’s making a clunking or banging noise. I called the plumber and he said it wasn’t anything he had done. Please help! My toilet upstairs was whistling after you flush it, my wife was all stressed to call a plumber. I watched another video that told me it was the pressure valve in the basement, to turn it in or out. But then i watched your video, and sure enough, it was the fill valve as soon as i pulled the lid off the toilet you could hear it whistle, wasn't in the walls. i could actually manipulate the valve and recreate the whistle. Thanks for all the info! I have ticking in my wall. I can hear it clearly when someone runs a sink upstairs. We aren't running hot water BUT it's been ungodly hot 110 this week. I can only imagine how hot it is int he crawl spaces of my home. Going to assume the pipes are expanding from that alone. I shut off the water valve for now. I'll wait til the temp drops and see what happens when I try to run it again.

hi roger, very good and informative video, doesn't explain why my pipes tapping. I can hear the tapping several hours after when the water stops running or sometimes all night and day, had the PR valve changed by plumber, didn't help the tapping.

Roger, I have a Chicago Faucet that requires a water cartridge for both the cold water and hot water or 6S-3H for Hot water and 6S-3C for Cold water. I just changed both cartridges and now the cold side is fine but the hot water makes that air pressure sound/bang when I turn it both on and off. As of writing this I am still trying to figure it out. Based on videos, it could be a water pressure problem or could it even be an O ring issue?? The parts are new??

I believe the thumping sound that we hear is coming from thermal expansion in our copper pipes after a few minutes of hot water running through the lines. I’ve read comments that say to replace the two holed copper pipe supports, that are holding the pipes too tightly against the studs in the walls, with less restrictive plastic or felt belt straps. Would replacing the copper with PEX also correct the problem? Awesome video! Thank you very much! Eric

That ticking dripping sound makes me so paranoid. It is right above my head by the desktop. We even had construction workers cut the ceiling open. They didn’t find anything. I wish I saw this video earlier.

Thanks for the video Roger it was great. The wife and I have a new problem in this house. It’s a 1973 house with copper pipe under the slab. I just redid the guest bathroom about two years ago. I replaced the tub, The shower mixing valve all new and we’re just now hearing this new sound. It’s a Repetitive hammering. Bang, Bang Bang, it did not stop until I open the Vanity sink valve I guess to relieve some pressure. So loud and hard that it shakes the tub. Could it be that the shower mixing valve gaskets are fluttering or clogging with sand the previous owner didn’t have a sand filter on the house at the well pump and I’m still getting a little sand though the pipes to that location. 🙏🏻

I had a bad thunk thunk thunk like a repeat hammer noise. It was caused by a bad low quality shower valve, replaced it with a new moen, problem solved. But it took me 3 days and many tries to figure it out. I really like your videos

Hi Roger, love your videos. I sometimes hear what I would consider "fluttering" in the water pipe (only in the basement where the water heat and hvac is). It doesn't sound like hammering (not loud banging) , but more so like the water in the pipes turning on/off fairly quickly. Maybe 2 times per second or so. Any idea?

Some shower valves have a metal piece inside that controls the hot and cold mixture. When the water turns off abruptly it causes that kind of rattle or flutter sound. I haven't found out how to fix mine yet but at least I know what it is.

I’ve been a Illinois state licensed plumber since 1984. Two hole copper straps in a studs or wood Joyce can be too tight, causing a dripping sounds mainly in hot copper pipes. As thermo-expansion on the pipe the wood ticks. Our solution is to use plastic suspension straps. Which are more forgiving and solve the noise problem.

Hi Roger, thank you for your teaching. My pipes make noise sounding like water pressure despite the tap not running. It's most loud by the stopcock but I can also hear it by the kitchen sink 50 feet away. Applying pressure clockwise to the stopcock, as if to turn it off, reduces the sound although it can still be heard. There is no indication of leakage. Please kindly advise. Thank you.

I can hear a loud toilet flush and water going through the pipes . Toilet is upstairs and can be heard downstairs. I thought this is lack of insulation in the walls around the water pipes? But it could be valves? Thanks!

We got a new GE washer and dryer recently. During the wash cycle there is a bang...sound is similar to throwing something heavy into a metal trash bin...so after watching this video, we're going to go get the arrestors for both the hot and cold water intake hoses that attach directly to the washer (not from hoses connected to wall where the hot and cold water on/off are) and see if this stops the bang during washing. I lived in a newly built apartment building where, when hot water was poured down the drain, there would be a loud knocking sound. I had maintenance come and they installed a hammer arrestor on the hot water feed (at the time it was just associated to running hot water in that sink), but it did nothing. Never did figure that one out, and it didn't happen in my next place, but it happens in my current one.

Could it be thermal expansion in the drain line? I get ticking/knocking sounds when running hot water as the pipe expands and shifts slightly. I wonder if this happens to drain lines, too.

I have a foghorn like sound when running the water, hot or cold. Does not seem to be coming from any specific fixture. The water pressure is at 55 which I understand to be normal. The interesting part about this is there were no changes to the system that created to noise, it seemed to just start out of the blue. Thank you in advance for any possible solutions.

Yo Roger, I didn't hear you talking about a noise I hear every time I run the water upstairs. It's similar to your drip sound in regards to the sound emitting from inside the wall. Same dripping sound but a much faster pace. Think of someone pouring water out of a water bottle for the duration of using the shower. I did a quick check in my crawlspace but found no water/leaks where the sound is coming from. Your videos are awesome and very informative. Thank you for the content!

Quick horn/honk sound will happen maybe a few times during the hour after using hot water. Cant pinpoint where it is in the house. It may not happen, or may happen several times. Any thoughts?

I have no noises and everything seems fine. But gauge shows 105 psi. When I use water with a flush or such the pressure shows 60 psi. Turn off all uses and back to 105 psi. I read that this is high for a pressure control valve. Should I worry about it? I have a Watts 25AUB. Thanks, your videos are great.

2:31 So, why does the sudden closing cause that shock? Is it the sudden stop? I do know that water (like most things) carries momentum pretty well. Is that why it makes a hammering sound?

Yep. It’s actually called water hammer. Basically too much back pressure with that abrupt stop.

Thanks for the video. I know my problem. Hot water going down the drain causing expansion in the pvc drain making knocking noise. My question is could one stuff insulation down the wall around the pvc to stop the knocking? Years ago they had a pouring insulation called vermiculite that has been banned. Do you know of any new products like that that could be used around the pipe? Thank you again.

THe ticking you talk about can also be the thermal expansion from the how water going down the drain. if the waste pipe doesnt have the movement, or holes in the studs/pipe clips are too tight, this also causes ticking

I hear loud "water flow" noise stemming from the main input water shut-off valve, traveling to my washer hose, and water heater, nearest the main valve... however, when the main valve is shut off the water flow noise stops. No leaks in the house... no water hammer (I know that sound). No videos on YT addresses this issue. What say you, sir?

Great video. We’re getting a loud bang when the water shuts off. But more importantly, the water seems very loud. I don’t know if my walls just on insulated enough or if the pressure is too high but when our downstairs bathroom has water running, It’s super loud in my bedroom upstairs. Any idea of what that could be?

What about a loud " thud " that sounds like someone is bouncing a ball against the wall? Sometimes there's a few thuds, maybe a second apart, or even minutes apart. I live-in a condo, and was for sure it was my neighbors kids, but the hear it too, and confirmed it's not their kids. Most videos I've seen don't demonstrate this type of noise. I have no idea what it could be.

My commode doesn’t act up because I’ve tried to do maintenance regularly to avoid major issues in the future However I have a noise I can’t figure out When I raise the seat to urinate after finishing for two or three seconds after I’m finished . I can hear a trickling noise and then it stops. Because I usually don’t flush every time I urinate because of water bills . I'm worried now because he said if the water isn't running then it's a problem.... I just reset my pipes to see if I had an air issue in them, and now I have the tick drip sound.... But no water on and no water damage. Seems like it has more to do with the drains somehow. Guh.

I have a high pitch whistling sound when I run the faucet in my master bedroom sink. The whistling sound stops when I turn off the master bedroom sink faucet. What could be causing this sound? I noticed the whistling sound about one month, about the time I had our solar water heater changed in early May. We have new water running sound when there is no water running. Almost sounds like that soft toilet refilling sound. We can hear this at both bathrooms and kitchen and garage laundry. Hot water heater is in garage and we have no change in temp and duration of hot water. We have checked inside and outside everywhere and can find no signs of leaks. Please help. Happy holiday, when I turn on my water whether in the bathroom or kitchen. My powder room bathroom makes a whistling sound. What does this mean? I just notice the inside water thing when pulled up it stops. Along the whitling noise.

just found the source of a short "howl" every time the toilet was flushed - ( fill valve cleaning and rebuild didn't help) - a light-weight garden hose( thin rubber liner inside a woven cloth cover) - was left with the nozzle closed and the faucet on - leaving water pressuring up the rubbery liner of the hose. This set up the potential for the entire hydraulic system to oscillate when "disturbed" by a valve opening. Turned faucet valve off and noise is gone!

Hi there, we recently had an irrigation system installed and now the pipes make a ton of noise when the water is turned on anywhere in the house. It sounds rhythmic and is very persistent. What is going on??

Hi Roger. In my bathroom, I heard a loud hammer noise in my pipes when turning on the water in the bathroom. Following the noise, I noticed that the water shut off valve leading to the outside of the house, when turned to the off / stop position stopped the noise all together. I just had some insulation put over the sill of the basement walls and they added the foam insulation around the outside water line. if that Pipe is not level, could that cause the loud "Hammering" that I hear? Not sure why turning the shut off valve to close would solve the problem?? Any suggestions on how to keep the shut off valve open and eliminate the hammering. I have done nothing else work wise surrounding the pipes other than that insulation.

My apartment features high pitched occasional squeaking noises, that sound like are coming from the ceiling. I live in 12 storey building. I wasn't sure what the noise was, and have brought it up to the building manager.

So, i have gurgling in my walls, which occurs randomly and spontaneously (not associated with flushing a toilet or other concurrent water usage). It is just a random, periodic gurgling. I am on a septic tank system, but had the tank emptied recently. I am wondering if my roof plumbing vents are clogged, but how do I test for this? Can I use a garden hose to run water into the vents to see if the water backs up?

Sound of water running in the bathroom wall with any plumbing usage, no water being used. all hoses are off. Turned the water off to the house when i left for work which gets rid of the noise. After turning the water back on when i got home, it gradually over an hour or so came back to the very noticeable sound that to me sounds like water running, I hear it in from the drain, when i put my ear to the wall, I hear water running as well. The sound also comes from the water heater as well. I'm going to watch your video on those sounds now to see if I can figure it out. Any input is welcomed graciously my man, thanks.

Hi all faucets and Spicket make a noise kind of a moaning or grinding noise when I turn them on. We have had the water shut off by the city a couple times or they turned it to a very low level while they were working on something I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. Very loud when I run the dishwasher, but it isn’t every faucet.

Roger, I installed a new Rheem 72 gallon gas water heater. The previous was a 50 gallon. The 72 gallon water heater is a very tight fit in the alcove. A few months after installing the new water heater, I started having a loud banging/knocking noise and vibration in the owners suite shower and the owner suite sinks when hot water was used. I am not sure if the owners suite tub was knocking at the time. I thought it was air in the pipes. As time went on the banging/knocking and vibration became worse. Then, the gas ignitor went out. A different plumber came out to replace the ignitor and said the knocking was most likely from the owner suite shower handle cartridge (17 yrs old). He replaced that cartridge but the knocking continued. He then replaced the cartridge in one of two upstairs showers. The knocking quieted down but was still present. The next morning the owners suite commode was flushed and the banging/knocking returned even worse. It also occurred when the downstairs 1/2 bath commode was flushed and any sinks were used. I got the noise to stop for one day when I turned every faucet in the house on and flushed all the toilets. The next morning, the noise started back up. It now appears the knocking occurs when cold water is used, not the hot water. It also appears our water pressure has decreased and pulses with the banging/knocking. The sound appears to come from the water heater or area around the water heater. Any idea what could be causing the issues? Thank you!

Hi Roger, my problems is that all of a sudden now, when we flush the toilet, we can now hear as the waste is flushing down the pipes a more echoing or resounding sound that wasn’t there before as it travels down the waste pipes.

I have a toilet in a half finished/unfinished basement an I will flush the toilet and then shortly after about 3-6 seconds after the toilet has FILLED!! i can here it fill! and then 3-6 seconds later the pipe starts to vibrate and give us a noise with that vibration. the way they ran the copper is that it runs down in a straight line to the hose bib and the lines T off to the other fixtures. and I think I found it lol. I just went and played with the fill valve of the toilet and when I flushed and before if filled completely to the top to where the filling would slowly stop and make the pipe vibrate, I grabbed the float and pulled up on it to basically close the valve and stop the tank from filling. No VIBRATION. Love it and your right roger Fill Valve, so yeah that's getting changed after I can pick it up. Roger your awesome and thank you for giving back I live in Canada up by Fort Erie and Niagara Falls. Ontario Canada. So big thanks because I've been fastening my pipes to the floor joists for about an hour, and while that does solve my OCD for it not being done properly, had I watched this video sooner, yeah that's fun. My pipes make a continuous hammering/vibration when two or more faucets are on. I can get rid of the sound by slightly adjusting the faucet temperature or flow. This happens a lot when the shower is running and someone turns on a sink or the washing machine starts to fill with water. Any ideas of how to fix this? The noise can be very loud.

Wanted to also mention that the fill valve causing noise is one I have personally experienced. I redid the fill and flush valve(appeared to be original). Best 30ish bucks I have spent. Now it fills quietly. Reason for replacing the flush valve was because the tank was leaking. Since I had to pull it to replace the gasket figured it was worth it.

Thanks for that but our problem continues as it is quite mysterious. Here is the description: In our townhouse it started about 5 months ago. Without anybody touching taps. The pipes in the wall carrying copper pipes to the second storey just randomly bang and rattle, especially in the mornings or evenings or even lunch times. It feels as we are somehow affected by our neighbours water activities as it is a complex of 6 town houses. However the other units owners say they do not hear those noises except one other owner who seems to be describing the same phenomena. We have a called a plumber and he kind of re-secured exposed pipes with silicone, under the stairs although they were not obviously loose. Still the ghostly noises continue! They sound as if somebody lives in the walls. It is driving us crazy. The good thing is that it seems to be happening behind the plaster board walls so before we open them up; is there a camera that can be pushed inside with a light, to record any broken brackets or similar issues? We have called on other plumber but they seems to be biding their time to come over and nobody recognises the problem just by description on the phone. It also happened when the first plumber came a few times to see whats going on and it just would not it in front of him. Can you suggest further course of action ? We are in Australia.

Help! I live in a mobile home and have pet pipes. After I run the water at my kitchen sink (mainly the hot water) there's knocking/thumping sounds coming from under my dining room floor. I've had the pressure valve changed and lowered water pressure from 100 to 63 but it did not help. It also happens sometimes even when l'm not running the water. This may not be related, but coincidentally around the same time the thumping sound started my floor boards in dining room started to make creaking/snapping sound. Do vou have an idea of what could be causing the knocking/thumping sound under my floor?

I live in a condo 3rd floor. When I flush the toilet or use the washer on and off I can hear a loud banging noise. When I use hot water in the kitchen sink or shower I hear hammering noise through the walls and recently from the water tank(which they replaced the expansion tank) it sounded like from the water tank room that a headboard was too close to the wall making a banging sound. How do I fix it issue the hammering noise in my unit? How do I control water pressure in my unit ? Without adding a water pressure control valves on our main water line.

Question: I installed new copper plumbing and now the pipes are howling. Can this be caused by wrong wall thickness of 1/2" copper pipe? I bought what was available at Home Depot during pandemic. The old copper pipes didn't howl.

Mystery noise just started, in 25 year old condo. When water is shut off, like turning off a faucet, there is a clear, almost singing sound that lasts about a second or two. Unable to localize the sound, but occurs with any faucet turn off anywhere in the condo. Water heater does have a five year old expansion tank. Thanks.

On the toilet high pitched whistling noise; does it happen in or near that toilet? I have one happening when I flush the toilet, but the sound is happening on the other side of the house 1 floor up (no where near that flushed toilet). If I turn on a faucet in the room that the noise is coming from then the noise stops. And when the toilet stops filling up the noise stops. How can the noise be happening so far away from the toilet. It sounds like it's in the attic coming out of the A/C vent. It's not the A/C because it's not on when I hear it. Def only happens when the toilet flushes. thanks

I work in a hotel, 5 floors, and we recently have been getting comments saying theres a "jack hammering" noise in their rooms all close together on the third floor in the middle of the hotel. I have found the jack hammering noises and you can feel movement on the shower handle when the noise is happening. If its air in the line id assume it would find its way to the fifth floor being the top or maybe the issues are stuck in the middle finding equal pressure. I open the shower valve slowly and water comes out normal and dont hear any pressure being released. Its a head scratcher, out of 200 rooms only three are making the noise and they are all close to each other

I get a ticking noise when running hot water but it's worse when running cold water (repeated ticking noise seconds apart). I've cut open a hole where i've had a prior leaky pipe but everything is bone dry.
