You're a class act Nik. Some have a hard time understanding/accepting that "beautfiful" strokes don't necessarily equal high performance and vice versa. I personally tend to find more aesthetically pleasing forehands that have two key elements: extended hitting arm at contact (vs. bent) and finishing at the shoulder level (vs. above). But there's certainly more to it (body type, flexibility, athleticism, ...). And, yes, of course Fed's FH is the gold standard of beauty :)

Your strokes are not ugly, I just put down such negative comments to jealousy and ignorance. However it is true that for most of us club players that when we look at our own strokes on video we often find they don't look as good as we thought they might be, and have little of the aesthetic appeal of the pros. But as you may agree it's the effectiveness and consistency of your game that really matters.

I agree 1000% with your video, Nick. No one’s technique will ever he aesthetically pleasing to everyone on social media and sometimes in person but the effectiveness of their shots or how they handle their opponent’s ball is the most important aspect of tennis. I have enjoyed most of your videos and that is why I subscribed but this one really sets the tone for “intuitive tennis”. People have to do what they do best with their mind, physical abilities and God given talent. No matter how much they want to copy or idolize someone else’s technique, they have to be satisfied with what they achieve themselves. It is just a fact of life. Everyone will have “heroes” and/or people they wish to play like but at the end of the day, they will play tennis how optimally their body and mind allow them to play. Period!

QUESTION -- (sorry if it's off topic) I always hear and see groundstrokes advice and lessons talking about swinging low to high to hit topspin, and I get that, but when I see slo-mo of high level players hitting waist-level or above the waist balls, it often doesn't look like there is much of a deep racquet drop after the backswing and before swinging forward to strike the ball. It looks to me like two large contributing factors to creating topspin is the contact point and the angle of the racquet face. Most high level players strike the ball with their arm at about a 45-degree angle out in front of their body. This is at or near the point the when the connection of the racquet arm to the shoulder causes the racquet to swing up and across the body and over the non-dominant shoulder. high level players also keep the racquet face pointing down the court (or down toward the ground) and not to the side fence as they follow through. This creates an upward and across impact with the ball that imparts topspin. This is the natural and not forced windshield wiper motion so often talked about. Roger Federer's forehand is a great example to see this clearly because his swing is so clean and defined, but other high level players also make contact in an extremely similar fashion. It seems the difference in flat vs topspin is affected by the final destination of the follow through and the angle of the racquet face during and after contact. So, topspin shot vs. flat: Is the racquet finishing up and over the non-dominant shoulder with the racquet face pointing down the court? If so, topspin. Is the follow through ending up lower than the shoulder with the racquet facing the side fence. If so, flatter shot. What do you think? What's the greater determining factor for topspin, a low-to-high swing path, or a proper contact point and racquet face control? (Sorry for the block of text)

Yeah you are right. dont get stuck focusing on topspin. Crazy windshield wiper motions can set people back a lot. Very inconsistent to swing straight up at the ball. You gotta hit through the ball to have any hope of acheiving feel and topsin. And thats racquet face control and contact!
@astropiazzolla
@astropiazzolla 3 жыл бұрын
There are some different ways of achieving topspin, so those advises tend to be generic ones. A more "fixed" arm with a low to high swing can produce a more flat shot (say Agassi), and a "wristy" stroke with a more flat swing path can create topspin (say Kyrgios), so there are counter examples to the generic advise given. For a recreational player wanting more topspin, it may be easier figuring out what's stopping them from achieving it, rather than reconstructing it based on a copy.

I believe that unless one was lucky to have top trainer since 4th of age, he is having some faults, look at Petra Kvitová, people reproach her that she is missing lots of easy shots, she is really playing to flat shots with great power but not enough consistency, but she was growing up to her 12 year of age with completely amateur conditions, if she had top trainer since 4th of age she might finish with results of Serena. At later age you can improve marvelously, however, shots will never appear as fluent and natural, look at Raducanu, her parents hired diffrent trainer for each her shot. Our great violin virtuous Mr Sveceny when asked what kid needs to become virtuous, answered: talent, hard work and excellent teacher, questioned what if he's got first two but not that excellent teacher, - no chance he added

There are so many salty non-pro tennis players who are hypercritical of pro players' techniques. The only times I have issues with a pro's technique is when their serve has many hitches in it that make it very difficult to hit a consistent or effective serve, but at the end of the day it works for them for some reason and changing your technique that you've used your whole life is so hard and I know that personally as a lifelong player. I'm experimenting with different grips for my one-handed backhand and it is a struggle!

It is crazy when people criticise someone else's technique, especially when they are criticising a professional. Armchair pundits! I cannot believe people would say that the about the way you play tennis. I really like your super aggressive style of tennis judging from the sets you have posted - it is a style which is not as represented any more. Aesthetic of ones strokes is not linked to completeness of technique. Santoro was completely unorthodox and would batter any one of these armchair pundits. These critics would likely not be able to win a game or point against you. At least they have the comfort of thinking their technique looks nicer… I say thinking because people who criticise have likely not watched themselves play tennis.

You took the words out of my mouth. Tall and lanky players just don't look pretty on court. To name a few esthetically pleasing styles, we have Ken Rosewall, Chris Evert, Rod Laver. Some artistic styles like, John McEnroe, Henri Leconte, Evonne Goolagong. All are small to midsized. The best dancers are not tall. Your student Anna is a dancer and she´s small. About the flat strokes, there was a chap named Jimmy Connors that did pretty well for himself hitting predominantly flat strokes. And it's true about the WTA style. I've seen many juniors starting out in tennis, and they tend towards a WTA forehand because they lack physical strength. As the young boys develope and become stronger, they evolve towards an ATP style. And some ladies, that are physically stronger, also tend towards the ATP. One curiosity is that both Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernández, without being big or muscular, have more ATP style forehands.

Just like some older golfers i play with, funny ugly swings but they get the ball in so no problems. But your technique is not ugly at all and they work well.

I was waiting for this video for a long time, Nick! Intuitively I always knew you had all the fundamentals but optically there were some questions in my mind however I never felt your technique was ugly. On the contrary I loved to watch over and over your individual movements and explained it to myself as your personal unique stuff and enjoyed you had something really catching my eye. Thanks to your individual details of the technique for me it's even easier to trace the fundamentals and implement it into my game! And I'd love to have such a coach like you if I were living nearby! So, thank you for the work you do for us!

I for one appreciate your candor. A great lesson for all. A lot of Tennis Warehouse Message Board type "experts " out there, no doubt.

While I won't agree with comments here that your strokes aren't ugly, I found your explanations extremely interesting.

Great analysis, you must have a super ability to troubleshoot players' bad habits. Wish I was 16000 km closer!

If you are criticized, u r on the right way. This is a human nature to criticize, most people feel themselves better when they criticize someone. The wise man will always ignore that. As Laozi said: “If you measure your success by a measure of other people's praise and condemnation, your anxiety will be endless.”

This wasn’t the video I expected. I’m shocked people were criticizing your strokes. That’s the Internet for you. I thought this was going to be a tutorial about how maybe our (us) viewers’ strokes and technical aspects looked “ugly” and we were trying to improve our “ugly” strokes.

I’m a fan and subscriber lately though i’ve been watching you for a long time. So true but never be affected with bashers. Having a rude basher means u’re famous now !!!

There is no artistic note in tennis, the result only matters. Don't care about these kinds of critics, if you can win, you are right. How to improve (meaning more efficient) a given style is the only relevant question.

Tennis aside, I've found the beginning of this video very helpful. When I first shared my video of me learning piano from scratch I've received so many negative comments calling me outright a liar and because I wasn't expecting it at all, these comments really effected my mood. It even slowed down my progress and made me regret uploading this video. I guess just like everything, being able to deal with this situation requires experience. Thanks for the video!

These critics have never seen you play a full match and realized what a ruthless savage you are on the court.

Hey Nick thanks for your videos they are so useful. I would love to see a video where you show and talk about how to perform proper footwork on the court. If that would be a thing it would be grand! Thanks again for this amazing work you are doing!
