I'd love to see a source on that. Unless you're referring to A'ja saying that there have been players in the league (specifically black players) that have deserved shoe deals but have not gotten them, and a rookie that had not played a game at the time, got a deal including a signature shoe. Because everything she said is true, and she never said Clark got her deal because of her race, she was suggesting others haven't gotten deals because of their race (meaning black players). I think it may not be just optics. Sometimes the contracts state they can't release other merch that competes with Wilson's merch because that would compromise Wilson's sales. If Wilson's payment is based off sales revenue, Nike releasing Caitlin's merch would impede that and could be a breach of contract.

If you are paying CC as a major ambassador to your brand you put an internal team together for a generational/transformational player with global appeal across all genders. In this instance they bought the once in a lifetime competitive advantage to drive ridiculous top line sales, they have definitely dropped the ball. Even an apparel range would have sold out globally. The first signature shoe would have sold out to collectors, let alone be any left for my daughters to wear. Release something for us to put in the Christmas stockings!

Nike is a hot mess right now and the new leadership is already trying to lower expectations. Assuming CC has decent managment and experienced attorneys, I would be shocked if there is no requirement for Nike to release signature shoes within a specified timeline, especially if she is supposed to get a percentage of sales on those shoes. However who knows how long they have to do it and if the contract has built in extensions on any timelines plus what the consequences for failure to perform would be. From a business perspective I agree that it is nonsensical and a huge missed opportunity. However Nike is known for their woke politics and they are willing to lose money to cater to those interests (just so long as their overseas labor practices are not investigated or questioned). If you are interested there was a WSJ article earlier this week on how their signature shoe business has been floundering as of late.

So the company that makes Sabrina's shoes, and is making A'ja's shoe is ignoring Clark because they haven't given her a signature shoe after *checks notes* her rookie season? This is the same player that they have done MULTIPLE ad campaigns around. Not to mention, A'ja was working on a signature shoe with nike for a long time before we found out about it. Has it occured to you that they could be working on it but aren't ready to announce anything. After all, Clark has been a professional basketball player for barely 6 months, so there hasn't exactly been time to design, protoype, test, revise, prototype/test again, and start to produce a brand new shoe. I really cannot stress enough how there quite literally has not been enough time to launch a signature shoe since she signed that contract. You know how I know? I used to be a product development engineer, and I can tell you that six months isn't enough. There is logistically no way they could have signed her at the end of April and had a shoe, with a fully thought out marketing campaign, ready to go before the end of the season. You reference Wembanyama's shoe deal. He signed that deal before he was drafted (June of 2023), and his shoe release almost one year later in May 2024. You CANNOT reference that deal and still be complaining about Clark signing a deal at the end of April and not having a shoe at the start of October the same year, it's not a realistic expectation. I get that there's a lot of hype around Clark, I know that she is an incredible player, and I see what a large impact she has had on the WNBA and the sport as a whole, but at the same time like, other players exist.

Cannot imagine a company that signs deals to the extent Nike does, have loopholes that will allow CC to get out. This falls directly on Elite Marketing CC's agents. Who have a lot of top athletes in their tent. Wemby is incredible. Can he sell shoes in a over saturated men's market. Don't know. But the women's market is less saturated. This is why you want a base plus a % of the sales. 8 years 28M is good if she was getting a % of each shoe sale. That is where MJ, Kobe's Estate and LeBron are printing money.

They had the stars lining up, the NCAA championship game and CC breaking the all-time scoring record occurring IMMEDIATELY BEFORE the WNBA draft and season. NBA has NEVER had this timing advantage. It takes more than half a year to design a sneaker and produce enough shoes to start marketing. That is why most player don't get a signature shoe in their rookie season. But according to Caitlin Clarke they are working on a Fever-focused Kobe 5 Protro, exclusively designed for her.

Nike is playing the long game. They know that Clark will raise the WNBA to at least the level of relevance and probably more. In the meantime they will play the pander game. They will promote some of the better players. When they figure they can check the PC box and they have lost enough money they will come out with Caitlins shoe. If I were Caitlin I would want a long term non-disclosure agreement with Nike so that the level of sales is not made public. That might save her from an eye gouge or some other flagrant foul intended to injure.

This is what will always hold the wnba back. This “what about me” mentality. Jordan got a rookie shoe. Lebron got a rookie shoe. Kobe got a rookie shoe. Shaq got a rookie shoe. Zion got a rookie shoe. They were all the hottest thing coming out. No one cared if Larry bird or Moses Malone got a shoe before them. Caitlin was easily the hottest athlete and they missed an opportunity to sell out. Nike and the WNBA missed opportunities to not only expand their sport even more but to cause future growth for not only future rookies but also the veterans.
