The World Cup is supposed to be a symbol of peace and unity, just like the Olympics, which, when hold in ancient Greece, were linked with what was called a "holy truce". The offer of organizing the World Cup proposed to Qatar was very controversial, because this country has contradictory values to those aforementioned. Qatar doesn't treat women with respect, doesn't allow poor Indian/Bangladeshi workers to get a Qatari citizenship or even leave, and the joint salaries of a few of them barely make up for the rent of one room, which makes them modern-day slaves cynically used by the Qatari authorities. Let's not forget about Qatari involvement in the Yemen Civil War as well.

I'm an Indian who has a father working in Qatar . I think I'm eligible for answering . I believe Qatar had grew up a lot, in terms of treatment of the immigrant worker.They are treated nice and give rights. Here in Qatar, they treat women like queen.They don't want there queen to be harmed or shown in a wrong perspective.but this is my perspective on my favourite country.feel free to have a comment on this

As an ex Qatari resident , I assure you qatar have never restricted women from spreading their wings. In fact qatar was home, felt the safest growing up and spending my childhood there. So sad I would be missing fifa being hosted there. I clearly remember the days we were bidding for fifa back when I was in my school, those were the time. If respecting other people's culture makes me a psycho, so be it. Only the expectation that there should be alcohol served in a country that has an alcohol ban is a statement on how incredibly disrespectful we are to their culture, while we expect them to show respect for our culture.
