It's a result of colonialism in my opinion and a pretty logical outcome if you think about it. Pretty much every time you put in power a group that has been historically kept downtrodden for an amount of time which allowed them to adapt to that as a norm and are basically forced to get it by any means. Once that group attains power they then usually will rule with the same mindset or will adapt the same mindset as the previous group that was in power, coupled with the inexperience in governing themselves let alone an entire population, with neither option being conducive to a sustainable government. I see this as a direct result of european colonialism followed by often abrupt and inept transitions of leadership. While blame can certainly be attributed to those currently in control the lions share of the guilt remains with those european nations that initiated the cycle and then afterward found it profitable to keep the African nations weak so as to basically continue to loot them and meddle via the unequal and unfair system that is capitalism. By doing so they could claim innocence or even portray those european nations in a positive light simply because they were able to distance themselves from that physical colonialism. It is basically a grander scale of what the american governments set up post slavery and today take the stance that black americans that fail today are the sole responsible party for stated failure. Again just my opinion.

Years ago, the ANC wanted more white employees to be replaced by black employees. As a result, Eskom set workplace quotas in order to hire more blacks regardless of qualification. My father worked at the nuclear research lab at WITS , Johanessburg. As i remember it, the research lab was systematically closed down after 1994, even though there was much warning given to the Government that a time would come where there was not enough energy infastructure to power the country, and that more investment, not less, was required to secure the energy future of South Africa. They had DECADES of warning about this, but chose to do something else with the money and time.

As an American, my takeaways are: 1) blind party/policy loyalty just breeds corruption. Whatever your party, if you don't reflect honestly on your party's flaws, you become complicit. 2) you can't directly legislate hearts and minds and trying to do so typically just breeds injustice and resentment 3) when you're trying to use the ends to justify the means, you really need to think about, realistically, what is the end actually going to be and what other problems might it create?

From what I've heard, one of the flipsides of BEE and similar policies was a lot of middle class white South Africans now believed, rightly or wrongly, that the system was now stacked against them, and their ambitions and advancement in corporations and organisations would be limited in favour of black African populations. So quite a few of them began to leave South Africa or encourage their children to leave, slowly but steadily over the decades, until a quarter of the white population had migrated to places like Europe, North America and Australasia. This probably helped with the goals of BEE, easier to hire or promote black candidates when there are fewer white candidates in the first place, but there were some consequences, a significant brain drain, and a white population that increasingly became polarised between a poor angry underclass who couldn't afford to leave (and couldn't get a visa anyway) and a rich upper class who had enough wealth and privilege to avoid BEE entirely.

@Croz89
@Croz89 10 ай бұрын
@@thomascromwell6840 It's a matter of perspective I guess. Personally I think if SA wanted to boost the share of blacks in more senior positions in the economy, and do it faster than simply providing equal access would allow, then they would have probably had to have put the white population at a clear disadvantage until the proportions were where they wanted them to be. And from a purely selfish perspective I could see why middle class white South Africans would think that they would now have better opportunities abroad. But it is often hard to know if such a system does stack the deck because racial advantages are usually nebulous and hard to measure. You can quantify the current state of things with employment statistics, hiring rates and similar, but that often reflects the past more than the present. To say definitively that a white and black candidate of equal education and experience going for the same job that the white candidate will clearly and consistently win over the other is hard in the absence of clear discriminatory policy which post apartheid few businesses would have. Even harder is to work out how much you would have to bias the system to give the black candidate equal opportunity, it would be incredibly easy to overshoot.

This is a systemic problem. It's designed not for people to come out of hardship. For example if you run an NPO or NGO in the country, and you receive public funds. If you are efficient in spending and you end up with surplus which could be used to advance the organization, you will lose the portion of funds in the next cycle. However, if you use it all even if it's wasted, you will secure the same amount as the previous financial cycle or equivalent. Naturally this creates a culture of wastage and abuse of funds, because it's almost like you get punished for progress and rewarded for being dependant.

When it became a party it rose to power largely thanks to its populist rhetoric and the many promises it gave but a major problem was it still ran more like an underground cell or criminal organization then a modern political party, more like a mafia then anything else. Like a mafia "the family" or rather the party leadership is the party's first loyalty, deals arent made democratically they're made in secretive backrooms, records are carefully managed so as to prevent as much liability as possible, and the public front is just that, a front, carefully maintained like a mafia pretending to be a legitimate business and pillar of the community. They've stayed in power largely thanks to constant populist rhetoric and by relying on their past accomplishments like whoring out memory of Nelson Mandela. Populism isnt an issue in and of its self, it's something used in virtually every country and by most parties to some degree, but it becomes dangerous when it's a parties main selling point since they're basically just using it as a way to fool people. The ANC fell into the same trap many communist and socialist parties fall into: they rise to power promising equality, when they gain power they make a lot of early achievements by nationalizing tons of stuff and stripping wealth off the exploitative elites, then once they've done that they start running into issues because of corruption and incompetence. Nationalizing things isnt always an issue but it's like plundering/pillaging: you get a short term benefit but it's a finite gain that has to be carefully managed.

The decline of South Africa is a simple story that has been repeated all over Africa following decolonization. The native Africans are justifiably very unhappy about having no control over their respective countries during the time that they were ruled by Europeans, or in the case of South Africa, people of European descent. Further, the native Africans see that their former colonists still own a lot of stuff in the country after the Africans first take control. The Africans see this as illegitimate and start to expropriate the wealth. They also put their own people in positions of power even when they are not competent. Usually, there is also a lot of corruption and nepotism. This causes a massive loss of confidence in the state and economic activity plummets. As economic activity plummets, the country breaks out into violence which accelerates this process of national disintegration. Something similar happened in all of the major cities of the United States and is now happening state-wide in California. For example, Chicago just elected an even more radical black mayor in response to the previous black mayor failing to maintain peace in the streets of Chicago. Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Baltimore and too many other cities to list out have all had something similar happen.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the attempted genocide of white farmers. South Africa didn't have anyone to replace those farmers with, so there was mass starvation, similar to what happened in Cambodia. If I remember correctly, they're still struggling with food production as a result because there's neither enough people interested in learning to farm, nor enough people who can teach it. That's a pretty important part of South African history that really highlights a lot of the problems they face today.

My understanding is that the previously well run, productive and profitable farms in Zimbabwe, thanks to Mugabe's blind desire to return the land to native Africans, are now in a state of disrepair and decay. The new owners have neither the knowledge nor the inclination to manage them efficiently and thus people either starve or suffer much more expensive food prices. This is clearly a pattern being followed by SA... Along with the endemic corruption - as people see the country fail, they take what's left and hoard it themselves - you are left with a situation across not just farming, but all sectors, where uninterested, unqualified, selfish and criminal people take the reins - and the outcomes are obvious.....

Cambodia was different because the Khmer Rouge forced people to leave cities and go work on collective farms. Obviously, urbanites didn't know how to farm very well, and collectivizing everything didn't help. Some people turned to foraging for food, but the Khmer Rogue killed anyone caught foraging because foraging meant you didn't believe in the collective farms. So the whole thing was more about ideological commitment and the urban/rural divide than a racial agenda.

Most post-colonial countries will struggle with corruption because the same system of governance during colonialism is still practiced after independence. Thus the mechanisms for corruption that made the colonisers rich are still in place, this leave the door open for undue influence over the people we vote for to take care of the citizens interest. See, as someone who lives in NZ, I know a *lot* of ex-Saffas - and one thing that always struck me was from different people, of different generations all said something like this "Apartheid was absolutely wrong - but the country was run well" - which always struck me as Odd. Even Black South Africans that I've spoken to have said the same thing. Many of those that moved here 20-30 years ago have been seen as borderline prophetic. A lot came after what happened in Zimbabwe - and whilst they may not have gotten the timescales quite right - the end result has and was predicted by many for some time.

I think it's important to note the importance of culture. Anyone interested should read the book "WEIRDest people in the world", it's about the social and cultural development of Europe which eventually led to it's prosperity and domination. Perhaps this culture wasn't properly realized by the rest of the country due to forced apartheid, and supposed common values ended up being just surface level. Moreover, the problem starts when people take a prosperous country but forget the factors that made it prosperous and allowed it to remain prosperous in the first place. NOTE : I'm not saying that other cultures are simply worse, one should take the good parts of every culture and adopt it, that is in fact how many good cultures end up being made. I also understand the vagueness of the term but you can understand it as value systems people use to judge right from wrong, as well as social conventions and common practices (such as family structure). While the effects aren't direct, they are certainly there and noticeable. It is also important to note that this has NOTHING to do with race. Different local populations of humans ended up looking a bit different due to geographic isolation before faster transport was invented, but that's about it.

I think what it was (a large contributing factor), was that the ANC did not have any major political rival. At least one other major interest group could’ve helped balance the excesses of the current government. Unfortunately, a revolution government is almost always extraordinarily popular, which leads to a massive concentration of power, and almost no accountability, because anyone who actually does have power is with you or marginalized.

I'm an American whose been living in South Africa since 2007. I love your video here and decided to subscribe. How you were able to put all these facts together in such a correct way is to me..... amazing! It has taken me years to fully understand the workings of this country, or rather....the lack thereof, but you were able to produce all of this without even stepping foot on this soil? My guess is you've never actually been here before, but even if you have been here for a week or two....that would not give you enough time to learn the full story. I'm still learning more about the culture here, even after 15 years....lol. One thing you didn't mention is the fact that the rand at one point was actually stronger than the U.S. dollar. Up until 1982 the South African Rand had more buying power than even the U.S. dollar. When the New ANC government took over in 1994 the exchange rate was nearly 3 and a half rands to one dollar. Things have only gotten worse since that time. By the time I first arrived in the country back in 2007 the exchange rate had increased to nearly 7 and a half rands per one dollar. By 2009 when Jacob Zuma was president things spiralled down very quickly, so that it took over 10 rands to equal the buying power of one U.S. dollar. By 2018 when Zuma left office it was trading as high as 16 to one, but recently has almost touched the very monumental mark of 20 to one. So, if you ever do decide to actually visit here.... your dollars will go far! That's very nice for you, but for the average South Africa who is just trying to survive, it's not so nice. Infact, it makes all imported goods much more expensive and harder to buy. My advice to you is, if you would like to continue with this South African theme....do an expose on the "Rand to Dollar" If you are wondering why I have decided to stay here, its simply because God has brought me here, and until he tells me to leave.... I'm staying. I've been able to do alot here actually. With the help of many Afrikaans friends, and even a Zulu Pastor, who have come along beside me.... I've been able to produce a wonderfully unique music album. It's actually an American/South African project called, "Stranded No More" Here is a "Lockdown Music Video" we did in 2020 showcasing our theme song on the album. I hope you all enjoy it. Please keep South Africa, and our ministry in your prayers. God bless - kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ3OqoOvYtGdm7c Cheers!!!

Stuff like this makes me so grateful I am a Nigerian. Unlike SA, we didn't have any massive preexisting infrastructure or wealth built by whites. So we actually had to work hard as hell to improve and we also kept many things the British left us like capitalism, democracy, and federalism because we actually know what works. My country has many issues and load shedding too but we are far better than South Africa in many more ways and future prospects. Our electric grid, though flawed, is undergoing rapid modernisation and we never let our politicians rest on it. Our national unity is better. Our economy is larger (we literally outpaced SA as the largest economy in Africa). Our industrialization is increasing, not declining. Our political system, though flawed, is not as crippled and corrupt as South Africa and our politicians don't use the excuse of "apartheid" race to secure power. Plus, we are not known as a haven for xenophobic killings and murders. Good luck to South Africa

Great video. As a South african, now in UK for obvious reasons, it is great to see some awareness around this. Some notes on pronunciation - Lesotho = Lasootoo - rhymes with Tutu Thabo = Tahbow - no th sound. Another note, the education system has gotten progressively worse under ANC. Matric Pass marks get lower, classrooms are over-crowded. Areas earmarked for schools are turned into developemnts because of backhanders and corruption. It benefits the ANC to keep the populace ignorant. I have heard black teens say that they are told if they vote for anyone other than ANC, apartheid will be re-instated. Why don't you talk about the extremely violent crime and high rate of rape and sexual assault? Living in SA is like living in a war zone. BEE only benefits very few. Other non whites are also penalised. An example is a colleague of Indian descent who's sibling could not get into medical school because he is not black. He was a straight A student, but the quota system meant he did not have a spot. The place was given to a black student who passed with D's. Is that the kind of doctor's they want? Someone who barely passed medical school? No wonder people are fleeing in droves.
