Dude...you're 25. With a lot of experience and a bunch of money saved up. You'll be fine. I "started over" at 31, in tons of debt and out of my field for 4 years. I wouldn't give two craps about making content right now. We're engineers for a reason. We want to be challenged everyday. I've been at my startup for 4.5 years, which is pretty lucky. Getting canned would suck, I would just keep grinding for that job that you want and come back when you're ready 👍

Did you start over at 31 in Engineering? Am 26, considering starting over in Engineering (from Econ/data science background so some basic technical skills but little formal training or fundamentals beyond high school). Would be curious to hear about your experience

I went back to school for computer science in my 20s and finished with a master's degree. Before that, I was working at a lot of dead-end jobs. I don’t know if either of you will read this but it doesn’t matter. Both of you actually encouraged me to do mechanical engineering after accomplishing pretty much nothing until I was 27 years old. I went back to school and now I’m just a year away from graduating. I took your advice and worked my tail off just to get an internship lined up this summer. Obviously I’m stoked but it was after hundreds of rejections and black sheep mentality. I am surrounded by people who out preform me in almost every aspect and thought I wasn’t going to make it many times (hell, I often still do). Both of your channels kept me going so I just wanted to say that I really appreciate you both for that. I think I speak for many, but we are counting on you to persevere even when times are rough.

I don't comment much (well more so now) but I've been watching your content for awhile. I'm not an engineering major but I am going into software engineering after graduation and despite the differences in our technical backgrounds I still appreciated your content because of this sort of anti-gatekeeping vibe you bring in a place that feels kinda gatekeepy in some respects. I also like how this channel keeps things realistic. None of that endless glorifying of engineering either because it's not all sunshine and rainbows. You show us the ups and downs and that's far more commendable to me than simply showing just the good. The channel helped me curb my expectations too and I'm a much better person for it. Cheers mate you'll get back on it soon enough!

I actually really love this comment, so maybe you should comment more often haha. But, my goal was always to be transparent and not gate-keep because engineering and tech in general is such a gate-keeping industry with the mentality of "every one for themselves" which I didn't like.

Stable company, but actively looking for people who genuinely like to create. I’m currently in 12th grade. I’m terrible at testing, but I can’t stand tasks that are repetitive or “too easy”. I might not get into the unis I was hoping for, but in the end, I know what I want and don’t need to go anywhere specific to achieve them. Don’t get to stuck on anything to huge or small. Hey Tamer! Hope you get to read this. I got a job 6 months ago after job hunting for a year, you can't imagine how many interviews I got just because of the portfolio I had using your template. All your interview tips and videos helped me so much! Also, my undergrad was in mechanical/mechatronics and I did my master's in electrical and CS at YorkU, I graduated with a disadvantage of not having as much projects in software as my classmates who had CS background, specially in this job market where it is so competitive. I would recommend from experience getting a master's that's funded and where you are mainly mechanical but also learning control (Plc or Matlab simulation) , also look for labs that provide internships and have industry connections, specially if you are doing it in computer engineering where you don't have a strong portfolio compared to others. The same goes for PhD where you can get funded and get paid while doing it, although not the same as tech but you make that up after you graduate.

Hey Tamer, sorry that you had to get laid off. My bet is you will bounce back in no time. I am a mechanical engineer student and at the point where I need to find internships. Although there are openings I am a bit nervous because of I have zero work experience, but watching your videos helps me learn news things. Thanks for sharing a tough situation your in and the steps your taking to meet your goals.

As an Industrial Engineering (focus Mech Eng) Student I can definitely recommend doing a Masters Degree. I also work as an working student for Siemens in Germany. And from what Ive heard from the people who work here & also worked for different companies like Porsche, BMW etc that having a Masters Degree can be very beneficial. Also to strengthen your position in the company. Cause you have more defines skills in what you are doing compared to manyyy bachelor students yk. Also maybe you should look for other companies like Siemens, Fanuc, Bosch, Amazon, IBM etc :)

Hey, I'm doing a PhD in Computer science. The road to Professor is not masters->PhD->Prof, it is masters->PhD->Post-doc (x2)->assistant prof->associate prof->prof. Never do a PhD if you don't get a stipend. It is a long journey, so really consider whether this is for you. You don't need to do a masters just to demistify CS. MIT has online lectures on youtube. I would recommend watching MIT 6.006, MIT 6.851, MIT 6.172, and MIT 6.S191. If that does not seem to be what you expected, don't do a CS masters.

man I'm applying to study engineering at uni right now, this really makes me have second thoughts if the career path really is as stable as I've been lead to believe
@TamerShaheen10 ай бұрын
It is a stable field as a whole. The instability comes from working for start-ups only.

Hi Tamer! I'm from Brazil... Your channel inspired me to continue my graduation, thank you for that, your videos opened my mind to some areas. Now I'm a CAE engineer and I'm almost at the end of my master's degree!

Hey Tamer love the content bro. Sorry to hear you’re back on the job hunt. Wanted to say that I hear a lot of bad stories about software bootcamps. Be careful. A few students from my engineering program ended up getting entry level software engineer roles. You can definitely do it on your own.
@TamerShaheen10 ай бұрын
Interesting to know, thank you for sharing that! I've heard some negative things about certain software bootcamps as well.

Realize that all those haters trying to put you down, act out of jealousy! They're the kind of people to take pleasure in other's failures, just so they can forget about their own for a while. You're a champ and we (and they) know it.

Hey Tamer. Sorry to hear about that you got laid off. Job hunting is very frustrating, I have been there. But I wish you all the success for your project AMG. I also want to appreciate you for being so honest and authentic in your videos sharing your past experiences and current state of mind. Really love your content and keep up the videos. Would be great if you could share more examples of the design projects you did at work and break them down into a step wise approach (from ideation to creation) as you always do. That could be an idea for your future KZbin content. I have a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and currently am working as a Product Development Engineer at HILTI (Shanghai). If you were to ask me, I would suggest that you still keep looking for a job rather than pursuing a masters (especially if it is a researched based one). Working on product design actually has little to do with the courses and extra knowledge that you would get out of a Masters. I think a Bachelor's degree is good enough to equip one with the relevant knowledge (about materials, mechanics, machine design, GD&T, etc.) needed for product design. But if you are into high-tech research-based design work that involves complex mathematics like partial DEs or stuff like that, then that is a totally different ball game.
