Another reason the AR-15 is so popular is just that it is just so good - accurate, reliable and with excellent ergonomics.

The US Army has made few mistakes in the small arms procurement field, and those mistakes have never been absolutely disasterous. When the adoption of the slightly outdated M14 is arguably the worst procurement decision Army Ordinance has made, (and considering how good that rifle is compared to the competition,) you have to understand the US sportsman has good reason to be interested in also aquiring copies of those arms.
