The tree in my parkway just suddenly showed several cracks in 3 areas around the trunk exposing the hardwood. So what you’re saying is there’s actually a possibility the tree could scar over these areas and survive? The tree was planted eight years ago when I first moved here and it would absolutely break my heart. If that tree didn’t make it, I live in the western suburbs of Chicago and we did have a couple of freezes after the weather had warmed up in April. It doesn’t look like there was any injuries to the tree so I’m hoping it will survive.

Okay, this is a great explanation of what could be the cause, and what to not do. Any tips on what TO do?

Usually on bigger or if the crack is right under the internode I drill through with a threaded rod, washers and self locking nuts and wrap it with masking tape, keeping air out of the crack

With the extreme temperature changes here in Michigan both of my maple trees that are seven years old, have huge vertical cracks that happened within a week ago on both sides of the trunk of the bark and a large one on the other tree, and the bark is so loose you could stick your hand, part of the way in it. Should I be trimming all of that bark that is protruding away from the trunk of the tree?

What if you have already put silant on the wound?

Hi Sasa, it really depends on where the sealant is. If you are able prune off more of the limb and let the plant heal over without the sealant in the wound, that is the most ideal. However, if it is in the areas like on this tree, that’s not an option and in my opinion could be too late. I would just recommend monitoring the plant and giving it some extra care in hopes that the tree will heal over the sealant. Here is a good article about this particular issue: www.lawnstarter.com/blog/tree-care/tree-pruning-sealer-bad-idea/amp/ Thanks for asking! I hope this helps.

Can you apply tree wound such as pruning sealer and graphing compound..

Great question! The short answer is no, we don't recommend it. In the article I've linked below, UNH explains: "In reality, pruning paint may impede healing and encourage the growth of rot organisms and insect infestation. Rather than seal out infection, wound dressings often seal in moisture and decay. In most cases, it is best to simply let wounds seal on their own." I hope this helps! extension.unh.edu/blog/2019/07/should-i-cover-large-pruning-wounds-tree-wound-dressing
