The Netherlands is a small country in Northern Europe, home to just over 17 million people. A good part of the territory is below sea level, which is why it is famous for its engineering works to face the challenges of constant flooding. It is also famous for being one of the most stable and wealthy countries in the world. By 2017, according to the World Bank, it had a GDP per capita of $48,000 higher than countries like Australia, Canada or the United Kingdom. Living in the Netherlands is really expensive. But if you fall in the lower class you can get a lot of support from the government which helps. However when you transition towards the 'middle' class the wealth gain is verry little compared to the effort you need to put in, because as you get more income and can start building wealth you end up gradually losing those benefits. Transitioning from the upper ends of the middle class to the high class is always a benefit because you have in most cases already lost all possible benefits you could get. This is one of the problems that the Netherlands is facing now and it is partially the cause of the workers shortages we are experiencing. Another issue we have is the housing of refugees that yield no actual invesment return, however this is kind of the obligation that a wealthy country should have to the world. Then we have our educational system which is decent when you get to the post highschool level, but in highschool and below the quality varies extremely from school to school because the regulations we have countrywide do not really (they do on paper, but in reality not that much) adress 'quality of education' and districts and provinces have a lot of independence from the country when deciding how to build their school infrastructure. The huge amount of land that the Netherlands uses to produce food is in part responsible for the lack of housing, the huge amount of nitrogen that is produced has put us at regulation limits. Since the building of houses also produces nitrogen there is little room left for us to keep building. But the Netherlands did export 104,7 Billion Euros worth of agriculture products in 2021. Still the biggest income for the Netherlands is income and salary tax. 22,48% of the total income that the Netherlands had in 2021 came from income taxes. This does not include the 12% of the countries income that we pay for Social healthcare on our income. So in essence 34,48% of the countries income comes from salary and income of the working individuals. It used to be worth it, but the prices keep going up in the netherlands and the quality of everything else is going down, despite the huge investments made in education and healthcare the quality has not gone up. In the best cases it stayed the same.

While I agree and understand your ideas and feelings, I'd say it is much worse in many countries including and especially my country, Turkey. We have over 200% yearly inflation, millions of refugees that work without registering and paying tax. Their health insurance is paid by Turkish taxpayers which is above 50 billion dollars as of last year. They are working cheap and without tax while Turkish youth losing jobs. On paper we have the health system for free but you'd wait months if not years for an operation as all the hospitals are overcrowded. It is same with the rents. My rent is quadrupled last year even though Istanbul is a huge construction zone. It is loud, dirty, expensive and depressing I believe the situation is somewhat similar for most of the underdeveloped or developing nations. Netherlands being more expensive is kind of a shield for this kind of problems. The Netherlands has perfect infrastructure, people living are one of the happiest in the world, education level is high, and the most importantly quality of life is probably top 5% in the whole damn world. I am not saying the Netherlands does not have problems but compared to the problems of people complaining here, you guys are living a perfect life. The life is hell for 80% of the population in the world and Netherlands citizens have much more positivies than negatives. Thanks for the write up though. As a Dutch man I want you to know that on this moment there are roughly around 830.000 Dutch people that live beneath the poverty line of which 220.000 are children. It is estimated that in 2024 the total number of people living beneath the poverty line will be around 1 million. Given that we don't even have 18 million people living in the Netherlands, the number of people living beneath the poverty line is far bigger than you would think.

It also depends on how high or low you set the poverty line. When I am in NL I only see lots of cars, full restaurants and bars and a very crowded airport. Having got an MSc and PhD from Wageningen University, I think that greenhouse innovation is one of the most remarkable changes that took place in Dutch agriculture. Greenhouses used to require huge energy inputs for heating and lighting. Then, energy requirements started plummeting thanks to huge increases in efficiency. And now, greenhouses are on track to become energy producers. They harvest unneeded solar energy with solar panels and store heat for the winter. At the same time, they also give much higher yields for signature crops like tomatoes, as compared with countries warm enough to grow them outside in fields. This basically means that the Netherlands is now best at growing crops for which its climate isn't even naturally suited.

You're right except you forgot one small detail; everything grown in greenhouses tastes like shit compared to crops coming from real farmers. Try a supermarked tomato from a greenhouse, then travel to France and eat one that has actually seen sun and was fed by nature's soil. You'll for sure taste an enormous difference.

@@kolonelfranz31 I find several greenhouse crops quite palatable and importing, even from France, means that crops will have to be harvested not quite ripe, making them less tasty anyway. Also, food is grown more locally, meaning less transport and thus, fewer emissions. What I worry about more is a general trend that new crop varieties have fewer nutrients in them, while at the same time, fruit becomes sweeter and sweeter. I think that we need to rethink how we create our diet, because the food industry is making our food more unhealthy every year.

@@Bowonfire At the moment, greenhouse farmers use different methods of heating. The most advanced ones are using heat from deap in the earth. Basically, greenhouses are now in a transition period towards cleaner methods of heating. Of course, farmers also need lighting to grow the crops in winter, which also has an energy cost, and that's in transition as well, with huge windparks being built out at sea. So it's difficult to say how environmentally unfriendly it is to eat cucumbers in winter. But note that storage spaces for vegetables need to be heated as well, but less so. So the ideal thing to eat would be crops that can be harvested in winter, like kale, Brussels sprouts and turnips. However, I'm unsure if you can create a healthy diets if you limit yourself to such crops. Personally, I buy a fair amount of frozen vegetables and especially fruit. They are cheap and they don't spoil, which is a huge environmental benefit in itself. I'd be interested in what your approach is.

We were never rich to begin with. We had a chance to become rich, in the 60ies, 70ies and it was destroyed from mid 80ies onwards. Now, most people are relatively poor; that is; their houses belong to the bank and with the millions depending on state benefits, added as soon as a crisis hits (this winter) all the non producing jobs (which is a LOT) and minimal wage jobs will result in more than half the population having no means of survival. I wouldnt call that rich. It is the globalist idea of monetary and economic measure that is completely unrealistic and dangerous, that tells us we are rich. But we arent. My grandfather at least OWNED his house. Few can say that nowadays. Meanwhile the population doubled since then, solely because of mass immigration. Its not going to end well, soon.

The graph about re-exports represented all exports and not just the agricultural ones. In reality, not half, but one third of agricultural exports are re-exports, and about two thirds of the products are produced in the Netherlands. So we produce some more than the video mentioned. Perhaps surprisingly, the biggest type of agricultural export (based on value, not tonnes) is decorative agriculture, followed by meat and only then vegetables.

The 'nitrogen regulation' is solely/primarily targeted towards the livestock farmers since they account for over 40% of all output in the Netherlands. Within this group the main targets are those who have a farm near a 'Natura2000' area, especially the cattle- or pigfarms. There's an option for buyout but the focus is on refocus towards field cultivation. The remaining 'crop farmers' are urged to move towards more environmental agriculture, of course heavily subsidized. All farmers know this, and have known for decades. It's the agricultural corporations (animal food producers) that are in danger of making less profit and that's why the farmers have been mobilized to riot.

Good video but I have to correct something. Netherlands is NOT a low tax country as you said. Taxes are relatively high. What happens is: if you are an immigrant/expat wth less than 30 years old or have debts/loans in your country, 30% of your salary is not taxed. The govermnent see this as in incentive to attract young people from all around the world and to keep paying your expenses in your born country. There are some other help tips, for example in certain conditions you can get up to 90% reimbursment of health insurance (it is mandatory in the netherlands) and 220€ a month to help pay the rent, even if you have a decent salary.

Then you're not a high income earner. My top income bracket is 49.5% this year. Plus I pay 21% VAT on most products other than essentials with my already taxed money. We have high salaries in the netherlands but taxes is just too high in my opinion... I know a lot of people who use the system and stay home while they get unemployment benefits. I hope they would do something about that and lower taxes to promote hard work instead of lazy work. Netherlands is famous for our giant "part time" labour force since it's encouraged by the government to not work in the top income bracket. My 2 cents as a national living and working in the netherlands

It is true the Netherlands is a wealthy and financially stable country, as well as relatively peaceful, and I am grateful being a Dutch civilian. Yet there are some setbacks. For instance the dense population, which causes a serious shortage of housing and high rent prices. There are quite a lot of homeless people in the Netherlands, that are not psychiatric patients or drug patients but normal working class people who simply can't find a house and are driven into poverty and sometimes suicide. The very intense agricultural production does also pose long-term environmental challenges (like eutrophication of eco-systems). Moreover, the Dutch are famous for their extreme bureaucracy, which can get average citizens into serious trouble. De 'toeslagenaffaire' is famous for this. And Dutch society as a whole is getting less liberal. Citizens seem to be getting more harsh and less tolerant towards one another.

I think they Dutch are relatively happy bunch but nowhere near Spain or Mexico, and also they have a relatively high suicide rate

You have to go back a lot further than the 1600s, 1500s, and independence from Spanish rule to understand the fierce Dutch spirit. For 2000 years they were an independent sea-faring region, bargaining with the ocean, taming it by water control techniques etc. Even when Pliny the Naturalist visited, he considered their existence "wretched". But they weren't bothered. The Romans ignored conquest of the area in history for 1000 years because of their impossible geographic location by the sea. It was mostly lowlands and sea islands that would flood periodically, even daily with the tides. This isolation formed a barrier. So the Dutch NEVER had to succumb for long to occupation, oppression or subjugation and were used to fierce defiance, be it with Romans, Franks or the Habsburg, and stayed very capable for those reasons. They rarely had to rebuild from a conquest. And they got rich 1500 years ago, trading marl and fish with the British Isles and northern Germanic lands. They partook less in the constant wars in Europe, and more in trade abroad, capitalizing on shipbuilding knowledge and being at the estuary of 3 large European rivers. So modern (1500s) Dutch welcomed immigrants as long as you didn't cause trouble and wanted to make money. So oppressed Jews were accepted and flocked there. They're the first official country that allowed a religion besides the subjugation - styled Catholicism.

this sounds great and all. untill you live here. we have to many refugees that we can't account for. farms are being forced to shut down. gas prices are extremly high. there is a shortage of housing. it is about to get out of hand because there are already people that can't pay their bills anymore and that number is only going to increase if our crappy gouvernment doesn't do something really quickly now. it may look like everything is under control but really it's a big mess at the moment.
