Join us in celebrating a significant milestone for the Philippine salt industry! President Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr. recently signed Republic Act (RA) 11985, dubbed the "Philippine Salt Industry Development Act," during the Pandesal Forum held at the iconic Kamuning Bakery Cafe in Quezon City. This groundbreaking act addresses the long-standing crisis and neglect faced by the local salt industry, marking a new era of revitalization and growth.
With speakers including Congressman Wilbert Lee, PhilExport President Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr., and PhilASIN President Gerard Khonghun, along with moderator Wilson Lee Flores, the forum highlighted the crucial need for support and development in the local salt production sector. Despite being surrounded by vast coastlines, the Philippines has been importing a staggering 93% of its salt, predominantly from Australia and China. However, thanks to the advocacy efforts of PhilASIN and other stakeholders, including the filing of House Bill 1976 by Congressman Ron Salo, supported by organizations like the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and PhilExport, change is on the horizon.
RA 11985 aims to strengthen local salt production, foster industry growth, and ultimately achieve self-sufficiency, potentially positioning the Philippines as a salt-exporting nation. This landmark legislation is projected to generate 100,000 agricultural and green job opportunities in coastal areas, driving economic progress and realizing the Philippine Salt Industry Road Map. Salt farmers will receive crucial support in various forms, from financial assistance to technological advancements, empowering them to thrive and contribute significantly to national self-sufficiency.
Let's show our support for Filipino salt farmers by embracing locally-made sea salt and recognizing the invaluable role they play in our economy and daily lives. The journey towards building a robust salt industry in the Philippines has begun, and it's more than just about salt-it's about securing livelihoods, promoting sustainability, and shaping a brighter future for all. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this transformative journey together! 🌊🇵🇭 #PhilippineSaltIndustry #RA11985 #LocalSaltFarmers #sustainability
