The Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro hybrids that we get in Australia still use a DCT, but the clever part is that they use the electric motor to get the car moving from standstill, which eliminates the jerkiness that you can get at low speeds with a DCT because the electric motor can be fully engaged while stopped. The petrol engine then kicks in when the car is moving and it is so smooth that you can hardly tell when this transition occurs. It’s a very refined and efficient setup! The other cool thing is that the paddle shifters have the dual purpose of adjusting the level of regen in normal driving mode and changing gears when in sports mode, making for both a practical and engaging driving experience. Very clever indeed!

Here's the issue I have with it....there's been documented cases of the 8 speed DCT failing for years in the ICE SUVs. Case in Point, the guys at Car Confections just had Hyundai purchase back the 2024 Santa Fe Limited that they purchased, because it's had 2 issues within 3,000 miles. Why doesn't Hyundai just realize that they shouldn't have these transmissions in SUVs.

How do you know if you have a wet or dry clutch DCT?

Unless I misread the numbers the Sorento LX with the regular transmission and smaller engine gets better fuel economy than the EX dual clutch. Also do you address the numerous dual clutch transmission failures in Sorentos since 2021 to 2022. Has this issue been fixed?

I'm nuts about my 2022 Hyundai Kona N and think the criticisms about Hyundai's 8-speed, wet DCT are a lotta nada. Those who complain about the Kona N's DCT probably would grind the gears of a traditional manny tranny just trying to back their car out of the garage. The "trick" with this DCT is to ease onto the throttle until the transmission shifts into third, THEN give it the gas and GO!

When we can, we certainly want to film the introductory trims! We are limited to what is arriving at our dealerships, which is why it can take some time.

It’s not recommended to do so for long periods of time every day. Wet-type DCT’s handle it much better though. My best advice would be to make sure you’re either on the break fully or on the gas.
