As a Bronxite I feel DEEPLY honored that you shout us out! I was born, raised and still live here. 😍😍 Thanks! and yeah! You are right. In High School I wrote a paper about how The Bronx got it's name. Its very interesting. Its interesting to think that this land use to just be farm land and now we have so many houses and shopping here. I want to move to another city - but The Bronx - The Bx will always be my home. ❤ ☺ This video made my day. :)

Bonus fact : In french "Bronx" (due to US movies and TV shows of the 70's) is slang for a mess or something that went out of control. Also we kept the article and say "le Bronx" (the Bronx).

Yes, that's what I wonder. Why "The" Bronx, rather than just "Bronx." We don't say "The Queens" or "The Brooklyn." The closest "the" I can think of is "The Netherlands," but there's a reason for that, it being multiple lands joined together.
@nickjordan1125
@nickjordan1125 7 жыл бұрын
The "the" on that road sign in the video is not capitalized, though. So someone with more authority in NY state than you or I decided that it is NOT that important. Lol.

The Netherlands is a fair point. But take a look at another Country, The Gambia. Just like The Bronx named after a river. Not fair though since The Gambia added 'The' to not sound so similar to Zambia. Coming up is just speculation; in The Netherlands there are a lot of cities and towns also preceded with The(Den & De), or Of The(Des & 's), some examples: Den Helder, 's-Gravenhage, 's-Hertogenbosch, De Bilt and Dozens more. The adding of The at The Bronx might be remnant of the Dutch influence in the city.

Why do we often use the plural term or talk about objects in pairs when there is only 1 object such as scissors, pants, or glasses?
@MysteriumArcanum

I think it's because they have two parts to them, scissors are two blades riveted together, pants have two leg holes and glasses have two lenses.

I'm surprised he didn't deal with that. The borough is named for the river - "The Borough of the Bronx [River]". Later on, people forgot that; since it was the Borough of the Bronx, they just dropped the "Borough of" formality and called the land "the Bronx". (Whether it should be capitalized as "The Bronx" is still an issue people can't decide; I think most would say no.) A story I used to hear growing up is that it was named for Jonas Bronck *and his family*, that is, "the Broncks", but alas it isn't so.

There are actually several reasons; #1 They do not leave scuff marks that are visible. #2 Stuff does not get stuck in the sole, so as to damage the glossy floor. #3 The bowling alley can have another form of profit. #4 The person behind the counter can do more than just stand there. #5 Shoe companies have another form of income. #6 So Lysol can sell more cans of Lysol. #7 You get to laugh at people who have never bowled in them and land on their tummy or a**. #8 You can drive back to the bowling alley because one of the kids kept on a pair. #9 You can buy a pair and then pass them on to someone else. #10 So people can post online, why there are Bowling Shoes.

I was born there and lived the 1st few years of my existence in The Bronx and still live in travelling distance of it. The "the" in The Bronx is always capitalized everywhere in the NYC Metro area, subway maps, highway signs, etc. It is one of the only places with "The" in its name and I still don't know why; after all, it's not The Manhattan, The Brooklyn, The Queens or to be even more outlandish, The Los Angeles. Why the "The" in THE Bronx?

I thought it was called Bronx, because it was once the home of the Bronxosaurus which was found no where else on earth. But, maybe I'm wrong.

@Creecherfromtheblacklagoon
@Creecherfromtheblacklagoon 7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Paxton if you want the story, the phrase originates with a prime minister with the nickname "Bob" appointing a nephew of his to a political position. So Bob's your Uncle came to mean it's an easy or simple thing to do, like getting a political position with no experience through "Uncle Bob!" I agree it would make a cool episode for TIFO to go into the specifics!

I learned in school that they have elements of an English an Irish accent in them with a bit of Italian for New Yorkers this is because of the immigrants from these other countries settling in these states. I also heard in a documentary that a southern accent is kind of an offshoot of an Irish accent, with a bit of French thrown in in the case of people from Louisiana.

Nino Stark To excrete the excess of hormones and other chemicals that build up from the stress of being sad. same basic reason we cry when we are very happy, angry, scared...etc. any major build up of hormones can make us cry.

also the (sometimes loud) vocalizations we make when crying are a genetic holdout from when we were still basically tree dwelling apes, it served as a warning/distress call.

My 10th Great Grandfather Laurents Duyts came here in 1639 on “The Fire of Troy” ship under the pretense of clearing land for Jonas Bronck. In 1658 he’s banished by stovassant over adultery issues where he “sold” his wife out and was I believe sleeping with her sister… I have the wording of the council and their decision on Laurents “Big Shoe” and all others involved… banishments for 20,30,50 yrs, flogging, cut off ear and some public stripping from the waist up with “ bars on the arms” I’m not sure what the bars are.

Interesting fact: Actually it's not all certain that he origins from the Faroe Islands. Another strong theory is that he origins from Sweden, which is backed up by the offical historian of Bronx, Lloyd Ultan. There is a Bronx museum in the city of Komstad which he most likely was born in

He was Swedish. This has been confirmed almost 30 years ago. This guy has no idea what he is talking about.

It is certain he was from Sweden, for example from his marriage certificate. It is incomprehensible why TIFO believe in the old Faroe Islands theory, which was grounded in no research whatsoever (only on the knowledge of a "Jonas Bronck's Street" there, a name nobody know where it is from; but of course it is very probable that the Swedish sea captain Jonas Bronck also visited Farao Islands, especially because he at a young age moved to Denmark, of which the Faroe Islands is a part.)
