Another interesting detail I noticed in Malevolent (tho not music related) is in the descriptions. For most of the series Jon is referred to as "The Entity" or "The Entity within", that is up until episode 43/44 (dont quite remember which) where he is explicitly called Jon. Which also plays into the themes of identity as episode 43 was a really important moment for him in deciding who/what he wants to be.

This was absolutely phenomenal, my friend. A JOY to listen to. I am so proud of you for being able to pull this together; all that time and effort really paid off. I definitely know I'll be coming back to this quite a bit if I ever have music-related questions in regard to Malevolent. And the amount of things you brought to my attention?? The symbolism of the compositions for Faroe, Kellin and Collins possibly being influenced by supernatural forces and/or the Outer Gods, Arthur defeating the creature in the mines with music and the parallel to Faroe, the theory that perhaps Arthur *might* be hearing the score?? So many tantalizing things! And thanks for all the compliments, haha. You have made me so reinvigorated to find all the radio songs I am missing. 🫡 Thank you so much for making this!

OK OK OK this video has me spiralling but specifically 1:02:33. So Faroe's Waltz is entirely non diegetic aside from Kayne, and kind of the Dark Dirge. We know Kayne has an interest in Addison, and what resides in it. If I remember correctly Larson found the grey stone in their. The patrons are all strangely affected by whatever Larson did to the town, which probably was caused by The Grey Stone. Maybe the Dark Dirge being similar to Faroe's Waltz is supposed to symbolise, Kayne's interest and effect on the place. He's the drive that made Larson twist this place, he's why this place is so strange

this video is excellent, but i'd like to point out one thing about the piano scene in the addison bar: kayne is, in fact, there. in intermezzo, he takes arthur and john to a hole in the wall of that bar and tells arthur to breathe loudly, which arthur expresses confusion about in the original scene. granted, i haven't listened to that episode in a while, so i don't remember the exact order of events, but it's food for thought i guess. again, excellent video, i'm so glad people are talking about malevolent's music :)

Just thought you should know that, while Lovecraft was very xenophobic, racist, etc. for most of his life, he did take some time to reflect on that and change before he died after his friends confronted him about it.

Aaaagh, I’m so happy I found this! I just finished listening to Malevolent yesterday and all the music and what it symbolized and why certain songs played at certain times just wouldn’t leave my head. And I love music analysis and how it helps elevate a story. You went into so much detail, this was so interesting!

The phrase “now again with feeling” usually repeats by the teacher and means that you fucked up the performance AGAIN and now you have to repeat the melody with little less of the technique in mind but more heart in your keys It was the craziest flashback into the music school and it set the mood perfectly thank you for amazing work you done here!
