Great video Stephen. I have used the Lanshan 1 (solid, khaki colour) for 2 years and 500+ miles now in many conditions and trails, including blizzards and high winds. I think it's an incredible tent for the money. The little plastic clips that holds the door open will snap in high winds and needs replaced with a carabiner imo. The tent also needs really good pegs due to the one pole design, MSR groundhogs and Big Sky International tube pegs are the best I have found (I use the 9inch ones, the tent really needs them in high winds). It also needs a bit of seam sealing around the mid-panel guyline attachment points (mine had minor leaks there). The only reason I just replaced mine (last week funnily enough) with a XMID solid is this tent is a nightmare to pitch properly on rocky terrain (due to only being stable with minimum of 6-8 secure pegs), and heading to rocky spain soon I new I would be fighting with it every night. If you can't get a really good 8 peg pitch then the inner will be very saggy and annoying. The xmid for example assuming light wind can get good inner tension with just 4 pegs. I still think the Lanshan (and derivative/Nightcat) designs is one of the best tents for the money on the market, and easily the best tent to get started with longer distance trails.

I have the Phoxx 1 v2. It's light and compact enough to carry up a mountain, and it's small footprint makes it easy to pitch and it was great in the wind. However..... the fact I couldn't sit up in it drove me mad when the weather wasn't great....I would definitely use it again though because it kept me safe and dry and was easy to carry and pitch.... probably avoid it in bad weather though because i'd want to spend most of the evening out of the tent lol. I kept my inner tied to the outer so I could pitch them together on the Phoxx. I have been eyeing up a Lanshan though.... now I know the nightcat is also an option!

I was really keen on the Lanshan but in the end went for the basic Durston. It was £100 more expensive but weighs the same and has even more space inside. So far no regrets. But the Lanshan is a great wee tent for the money. I looked at the Phoxx but it is just too low.
@Mr7h213 ай бұрын
The Lanshan 1 is a double walled tent that is always seam sealed. It would be wise though to seal the guy outs. The Lanshan 1Pro is single wall tent and needs to be seam sealed. The Pro has a slightly better material. Both tents with stakes/pegs, footprint, guy lines, and stuff sacks are just a little under a Kilo. I'm 74 and need the lightest yet best quality economical gear I can afford on my pension. Just spent 4 days at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the Lanshan 1 was perfect as usual. I noticed your pole was set low for bad weather. If the pole is set to 125mm the inner is tighter, there is more headroom and a lot more ventilation. I enjoyed the 'tapping'. One day all the Gary's in the world are going to unite and rule the World.
@checkerspotfarm39273 ай бұрын
Love it! Two guys having a fun time, and a nice tent comparison. I have to ask though - I have a Lanshan 1p and use it a ton, but my inner always sags like a hot mess. Interesting tents. However, I should point out that both the Lanshan and Night Cat are copycats of the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo & Deschutes tarp/nettent combo. Which I designed over 15 years ago. They have won numerous national and international awards. They have copied by other manufacturers as well. So you might want to shout a bit of love to the people behind the designs you praised.

Wow! Did you really design those tents? I’ve used the Deschutes tarp and net combo forever. Awesome tents!
@Bokooda3 ай бұрын
I have the original Gelert Solo, which the Fox design was based on. If you pair it with a small tarp it creates a large sitting and cooking area. You only really need the actual tent to sleep in 'cos Gary's right, it is like a cosy coffin. BTW did he sleep upside down or at all, as he looked very, very, very tired..... Phoxx 1 is more of a big bivi rather than a tent imo. Everything considered I think the Lanshan/Nightcat trekking pole tents are the best on the market, value for money compared to the other trekking pole tents out there that do a very similar job
@evachjourney2 ай бұрын
Do you feel cozy in your tent? It seams the fabric is very thin, so in windy conditions does it get through? Why I’m asking is as I believe I have tent with similar fabric and it gets cold sometimes, whereas my partner has a bit thicker fabric it is a bit of like coffin but very cozy.
@StephenJReid2 ай бұрын
The wind won't get through thin tent fabric but the cold in general will as there's less insulation. The inner plays a bigger role in warmth for cold conditions you want a solid inner, not just bug mesh. The solid inner traps warmer air. But in really cold conditions, it'll always be cold in a tent. You warm yourself rather than the entire tent. A smaller tent will also feel warmer as less air to heat

I'm planning on cycling the Ring of Kerry next summer and I'm planning on either buying the Night Cat or Lanshan one person tent, the one thing is, I can't carry a long trekking pole on the bike, plus won't use if I'm cycling everywhere. I know you can buy fibreglass tent poles, which still are a bit too long, coming in at about 50cm. I suppose I could strap 2 of them to the frame somehow? However, I was looking at the collapsible trekking poles as an option to save on space and easily carry. Would you recommend a collapsible trekking pole for these tents?

This tent is a cheaper Chinese rip off of the six moons lunar solo, which is a great tent and this style is a favorite of mine. If you can get the lunar solo I'd do that instead. Netting at the door and around the bottom so there's a weight savings there, and it's got a better vent at the top. Otherwise same setup.
