I agree with this. I would also add that some of the fuel lines priming balls and things you get from walmart are not rated above 40-50 hp. this will restrict the flow and cause this issue were it picks up fuel when idling or at low hp demands. when you pure the gas to it and get going it will pull the fuel in the ball valve run grate for a second and then run out of fuel. back down to idle the ball will fill up creating another reserve of fuel and run fine at wide open for another few seconds... check the HP rating on the fuel lines tank and filter system with the boat.

Check your fuel lines my boat did that there’s a little plastic lining in the fuel line for ethanol gas the ethanol wears the tubing down and starts to erode and the little particles of the plastic lining will get clogged in there and make it bog down. Also check the fuel filter and the spark plugs Bc if there is bad plugs it will regulate how much gas get into the motor and that will make it big down too.

Hey Rob, i was having identical issues with my 76 skeeter. Ended up being debris in the bottom of the gas tank left there over time, that could be why it idles okay and goes for a moment but boggs when you give it throttle. It could be sucking up junk from the bottom of the tank. You can add an extra filter in the line and check it after running it for a while just to be sure. After having my tank cleaned and replacing the fuel lines and filter mine runs great!

Rob I had the exact same issue with my old boat. It would run good on a full tank then after a while it would start surging under a load. It turns out the hose barb that comes out of the gas tank was cross threaded and was sucking in air. The fuel pump couldn’t keep up with all the air coming into the line and the motor would just starve. I would start with replacing the gas tank. There maybe a pinhole allowing air to get in. If the leak isn’t there then it’s in the motor housing somewhere since it just replaced the main line. My money is on the gas tank.

I have an older boat with the same type of motor, and I found if the air way in the tank isn’t open the motor suffocates and dose the same thing. Try seeing if your gas tank has an air valve to open to have better flow. My boat did the exact same thing, with older motors you need to just run them, the more you run it the better it will get. It’s the venting tho, check the valve that is where your problem is, the valve should be on top of the tank. Hope this helps!

I have the same motor and it has done the identical thing and it turns out the new style plastic tanks were causing it. Picked up a old metal one at a garage sale has not done it since. Also if it bogs at a 1/4 throttle push the key in for a second to choke it and it will clear it up. Those motors don't like the warm weather that much also running premium fuel in the summer helps a lot

Whats up @lunkerstv. Need to get the carbs cleaned on ole Ricky. Had the same problem with my old javelin w/ Johnson gt100. It would do the exact same thing as Ricky by having trouble starting and when it did start and you would try to get on pad or plain out it would bog down. Its where it sat for a while without running so there is some gunk in there and where you started running it, its breaking a lot of it away and clogging the carbs. You gonna be fighting it for a while, even if you replace the fuel line. Its super annoying but until all the gunk is out of all the lines and motor, it will keep doing it ever so often. And then you will have to get the carbs cleaned AGAIN. Once you get the carbs cleaned don't let it get low on gas and sucking air cause it will do it again. I got tired of mine and went and got me a triton with an optimax. Hope this helps. Keep doing what you do and tight lines. God Bless and thanks for your service. If you are ever in East Tennessee in the future, lets fish!

See if your tank has inline fuel demand valve, and anti siphon valve, when one of those fail, you’ll have same symptoms, also check if tank is venting properly, best bet is to get a cheap replacement tank at academy, the red 6 gallon one,.. and new fuel line kit from tank to motor, just had this same issue myself.👊🏻

Drain fuel tank, add fresh fuel with additive such as sea foam. Rebuild kit for fuel pump is cheap like $20. Also spray some carb cleaner in the carb. I had this same problem with my Johnson 50 (basically the same motor). If you know where the electric primer solenoid is (usually on the right side if your facing the motor from the back of the boat) check to see if it is leaking fuel. Another cheap and easy fix. The Way to know if it's leaking is press key in without turning it, you should hear a click at the motor, look and smell for fuel. Hopefully you know to push key in to prime on a cold start. Push key in 3 or four times and then turn her over. Also that lever on the side of the throttle is not a choke. When the motor starts cold and idles at low rpms you lift the lever to raise the idle until she is warm, usually no longer than a minute. Dont need to do it every time you start her up on the water.

Remove the carbs and pots on carb, spray em out with carb cleaner, replace your fuel lines from the gas tank all the way to the carb and what I did was install an inline filter just before the carb to prevent this from happening. My mercury 75 had a similar issue, youd have it on full throttle and boat would even get over its wake then all of a sudden you had full power again. Everyone told me it was a fuel issue so replaced everything fuel related and still had no joy. Rob, is there an inline filter? try changing that and cleaning the carb jets. If the boat sat without the proper fuel stabilizer for a long time varnish and sediment will settle in the jets and bowl of the carb. When you give Ricky the full send it increases the fuel flow and the varnish blocks the jets so the proper fuel flow for the engine demand is not being met, hence the bog down. ill be down in Texas TDY in a month or so. ill fix ole Ricky for ya hahahaha

Have you looked at where the primer ball connects to the tank to see if it’s sucking air

Replace the hoses that feed the fuel to the ball. The dry out on inside and break into small pieces to restrict fuel flow.

I own a boat just like this and mine wouldn't even start it would just sputter so i replace the fuel line and it fires right up and you need to replace the plastic end that connects to the engine would be best to do the hole fuel line

I had the same thing happen to me. Try cutting the fuel line back on both sides. It sounds like the fuel line is either cracked or the inside lining is wadding up. The inner lining on mine was wadded up.

Internal fuel pump diaphragm might be weak or leaking... The way it stuttered and missed at full throttle says coil pack to me... after it stutters and dies pop the cover off and see if it is wet around the coils. Sometimes water gets up in that area when slowing and a crack in the coil = shorted out when wet. Other possibility is carb needs a rebuild, ethanol does a number on older engines and seals... you may have gunk in the carb that drops back down to the bottom of the bowl after sitting for a bit.

Check the carburetor take it off take it apart and take pictures of parts if needed clean it with air and carb and choke cleaner then put it all back together this part controls the air fuel mixture to the engine.

Check the fuel filter and make sure it’s in the right way and it’s clean I had the same problem when I first got my boat the guy had the fuel filter upside down and it would run until it sucked the upside down fuel filter up into the intake hose and would bog down and it’d have to sit for a minute I hope this helps

whats happening is wehen is sits and then runs right is its filling the carb bowls. then you run it full throttle and it empties them. all you need is rebuild the carbs and change the fuel filter. new set of plugs wont hurt.

The float in the carby might be stuck to the top or sides of the carby itself meaning the engine keeps getting at unevan amount of fuel causing it to flood and bog. Caused by old fuel evaporating then cristlising in side the carby holding the floated in place once evaporated.

replace your fuel lines and clean the carb out, may have had old fuel sit in there and the ethanol in the fuel nowadays gums up and eats carbs up quick if they sit for too long.

Replace your fuel line from tank to engine it can collapse inside, also change the oring where the line hooks to the motor... sounds like its losing suction on the fuel line.

Rob I don’t know if you will see this comment but our boat used to do the exact same thing and we had to drain the gas tank change the fuel filter and then put brand new gas in it. We change the fuel filter every couple times we go out and we have been able to keep the problem down to a very minimal level.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Definitely should clean and rebuild or buy new carbs. Clear all the fuel lines out and get some new clean fuel in there. The carb might also need to be adjusted, sounds and looks like it might be idling low or something along the lines of that.

Check to see if there is an inline fuel filter that may be clogging up and hindering the ability for gas the get into the engine.
