Sandi when you do the facts and figures for the lambing at weaning remember this. It is but a few short years ago you would have been doing double backflips over this groups results. This group is largely maidens and been as easy group to lamb. The single births have largely been easy on the ewes preparing for their future. I guess it’s a matter of looking at the big picture. Looking at all your results over the past 6-8 years will tell the story.

with the milk coming in late I would talk to the feed guy as is there a mineral missing that could help with that problem and throw the late milk problem past the vet - if all three of you don't have an answer it might just be the hot weather or are they all the same breed x mix as they all seem to be 2016 and it's a breed type issue with lambing in the summer

"Bighead" looks like she has HUGE eyes because of her natural "smokey eyeshadow". She's a looker. I hope her front legs get better. It occurred to me that if she was stuck and you had to pull with tissue already swollen and there already being tissue damage, and her shoulder is forward and her "knuckle" is buckled if there wasn't a bit of a nerve stretch. An injured nerve would definitely affect a lamb's ability to get its legs under it and stand properly. Idk what you might so for that, but that's what occurred to me when I saw her. IF there is some nerve damage/impingement from inflammation, even though she looks great and can feed, there would probably still be inflammation in the deeper tissues. If it's impingement from inflammation and/or stretch nerve from pulling perhaps some anti-inflammatory might help her get over the hump? 😕 I realize that this was on Thursday and today is Tuesday, but I still thought it was worth saying.

That smokey eye is, I think, a black eye from the swelling of the lamb's head. Eyes blacken really easily. It'll probably lighten up over the next couple days.

Big head looks much better, i hope it can stand, walk and drink on its own soon! The lamb you were weighing in the sling/fish scale contraption you use was making the most beautiful baby lamb sound ever! It sounded so content, despite the fact that you were manipulating it. It's as if some of them, as well as some of the adults, know that ultimately, you are the MAMA, and you are only there to help them always! It's your vibes I'm sure, that they catch on to, and feel the love! You are so good at what you do, and they all know it and love you for it. I know this by just watching your videos, not even seeing it in person, but I bet if I did, I'd cry seeing them trust you and love you, even though you make mistakes and they're skittish sometimes. We can see the love, and they all can surely feel it Sandi! Anyone who comments saying something to the contrary are just assholes, and I wish you could always disregard their comments, or maybe even chalk it up to them having a bad day or a rough life, and they can only feel better about themselves and their situations by lashing out to others with negativity. Don't spend ANY time validating their ugliness by letting it bother you......you have an extremely special bond with all your sheep, because you are a kind and loving shepherd! I watch because the sheep are too cute and you are too sweet. I have bad allergies so I could never be in a barn like that. The last time I was at a Fair I went into the livestock barn. Two steps in and i turned around and went back out because I was sneezing my head off. Watching you throw out the straw for bedding makes my nose tickle. I love animals and this gives me a chance to at least watch them and learn. I think a lot of people are fascinated by the machine you use for keeping data because it makes your life so much simpler than having to write everything down. I like watching you find new things on the Gallagher because you get so excited.

I live in Australia my father was a shearer for about 20 years and the number of fly struck sheep he came across in the Aussie summer was ridiculous, even though it has been common practice to dock tails a crutch the lambs to reduce the amount of wrinkles around the sheep's behind, because of the breed of sheep, they were mostly Marino's which are very wrinkly and often get fly strike due to build up of fluid around the back ends and the boy's just love it

Martin Fletcher Australia sheep have also been bred to be less wrinkly for this reason eg the Marino. The difference in the last 50 years is remarkable.

Appreciate your transparency. Your ewes not coming into milk...water and weather. Are they getting sufficient hydration? That is hard to track. Weather...warmer weather could negatively affect the ewes. Is it a trait of the particular breed? So thankful big head and shoulders (shoulder distocia?) made it. Remember we live in an imperfect world...you are a good shepherd.

Thank you Sandy for posting and leaving on the tube. I went out this morning 3 ewes at once. Mom quit with 1 leg and huge head. I thought it’s dead. I had to chase grab leg and pull so hard. When I got it out and breathed and lived. Second leg came out breech baby but lived also. Ewe never had trouble before. All is well. I have watched you for 3 years and have learned so much but I was still calling on Jesus who is my ever present help in times of trouble and he is my faithful shepherd! I love sheep and I am blessed because of all you do Ps. My girls outside with free choice barn so I got my cardio today😂🌸💪🏻

Hi Sandi - While at a Retreat some yrs ago, we did an exercise where each person stood alone in the ctr of the group. 1st the group members were told to tell the person everything they saw wrong w/them. Afterwards, the person had to repeat what they'd heard. Each only remembered the most horrible things that'd been said even tho' those comments were the smallest part of what had been said. When the group then peppered them w/compliments, they only remembered the very minor 1s. You aren't the only 1 who is cut to the heart when ppl are nasty, it just takes a greater belief in yourself & the WONDERFUL, CARING, LOVING woman you are & sometimes that can take time & really listening when the ppl you surround yourself tell you just how much they love you & how happy they are that you're in their life. As for the Gallagher, The Hoof GP uses 1 to track the number on the lane cows they treat, what was wrong w/them, what he or "Craigy Boy" did to treat, if it should be seen by a vet, what the farmer needs to watch out for, when or if they'll be back to look at the cow again & if they've discovered something not hoof related that needs urgent medical attention. They give the farmer a copy & have a cc for their files/billing. It was interesting! Be kind to yourself❣ Cat 🐾🥰 🤗 🐑 💖

Poor baby... well babies.. taking the bad with the good isn't always very easy thing to do especially when you are talking about life and death. It always makes me wince a little when the ear tag goes in, even though it doesn't seem to cause them much pain at all. But I love the little sling you put them in to weigh them, even if they don't see to care for it much. :P

It's just like having an ear piercing. It does sting a little for a few minutes but they get over it very quickly. The sling they really just get a bit confused. They feel insecure in the sling.

Most 4-legged animals get frightened when all four of their feet are unsupported. They don't like to dangle. I had rabbits, and you have to put your hand under their hind legs when you pick them up, or they'll kick and struggle and maybe even fall and get hurt.

I'm a L&D RN and the "stuck lamb" looks to me like it may have some brachial nerve damage which hopefully will correct itself but it may not.

@@marionward5958 like the lamb can't feel its own toes and rolls over their toe because it's so numb? I was thinking it's shoulder might be dislocated but it does seem like it can't tell where its own toes are and can't trust itself.

My son was born with Erb’s palsy from a brachial plexus injury. Eventually, over time and after physical therapy as an infant, three of the five nerves recovered function. My son also had head swelling, facial paralysis, torticollis (neck muscle injury), plagiocephaly (misshapen head), and cerebral palsy. He is 12 years old now, and early interventions have corrected most of his challenges. The plagiocephaly and torticollis were corrected. 3 of the 5 nerves causing his Erb’s palsy healed (nerve pathways around damage) over time. He’s an A/B honor roll student who loves to dance and play video games. Sandi caring enough to intervene with stuck lambs, pushing them to walk and drink, is changing their quality of life. Just as great L&D/NICU nurses, therapists, and involved parents improve the quality of lives for children with birth injuries.

We had a goat kid with similar birthing damage. We strapped it straight so it couldn't knuckle over and hoped for the best. After 3 weeks she was able to walk very easily with a slight residual limp, which was way better than the alternative if we had not intervened. Hope the little lamb has similar luck with success 😊

We have handled fly strike when my mom purchased two underweight bottle lambs. The manure serves as a starting point for the flies, and then the fly maggots eat the flesh surrounding the manure. To stop the process we bathed the lambs and removed maggots at least daily until they were all gone, and were particularly careful with fly control that year to prevent reinfection or spreading.
