There used to be this show in the 90s called "Beyond 2000" where they showcased new technology and inventions. Every other episode there would be someone new like "hey, I slapped some eyebrows on this robot and now robots can express emotions!" I think its like a grift for funding, because they know that idiots will just be like "holy fucking shit! It's the future!". You're right, it doesn't do anything. Everyone can tell its a robot.

2:43 Don't forget, Charlie. At one point us Homo Sapiens were living alongside Homo Neanderthalensis, Homo Denisova, Homo Rhodeseinsis, and the eldest species Homo Erectus, and maybe more. That's 5 species of humans sharing the same world together, and there was supposedly 8 during that time period. This is possibly where the uncanny valley feeling came from, because there were many similarities between us and all of them, but I'm sure recognizing those little differences and trusting the anxiety is (part) of what helped us come out on top, the anxiety of seeing somebody who is like us, but not quite, could've helped us avoid the more evil individuals of the other human species, which in turn avoided possibly a very gruesome death, allowing those people to pass this knowledge and fear to their offsprings. What we feel when we see these robots is most likely another remnant of our past.

We talked about why do we need human looking robots a lot in my Computer Science ethics classes. One idea is to make robot workers more personable when dealing with humans. Like if you had a robot doctor, you would subjectively feel better about a diagnosis if it came from a human then PC. Long term it would also be a way for humans to move away from their own bodies. I am sure there are a bunch of extremely disabled people that would transfer themselves into a human mech suit if it was available and safe
@pudie89522 жыл бұрын
I have to completely disagree on the first point. 2nd one is the first actual point I can agree to about human-looking figures. But I can assure you, the last thing I'd want is a human-looking thing not being actually human. I'd rather have it be it's own thing, with it's own figure. Sure it can have a body, sure it can have "eyes", and a "mouth", and all that, but for the love of god don't make it look like a human, or a dog, or a bear, or anything that actually exists, make it it's own thing. Base it in a human body, sure, but don't make it a human body. And if we're talking about a situation where I couldn't tell if it's a robot or a human, I'd be damn horrified if I found out it wasn't a human for whatever reason. I'd also be terrified knowing there's a possibility.

Technically, referring back to microbiology and chem. Shape determines function. So if you want a machine to do what a human can do, it makes sense to make it look like a human. If you want something to do what the human hand can do, then you would make the machine a replica of the human hand. So i get why they replicate humans with this tech. It also helps with simulation education in healthcare. It helps having realistic models.

Here's another strange way to look at this: at some point we will reach the Singularity, the age when both man and machine finally meld together and we become cyborgs. And if by the time we reach a post Ghost in The Shell/Cyberpunk/Deus Ex world, those "new humans" will probably look back at this period and wonder how we did it without cybernetics, almost like a reverse Uncanny Valley. I mean, probably. We may end up wiping ourselves out long before then but it's fun to speculate.

Robots will never be able to fully mimic human faces without looking creepy. No matter how many artificial muscles you put under that mask, it's never going to be able to compare to how an actual face/head moves. Your face is almost never completely still, and you're not in control of most of its movement, at least not consciously. Your eyes constantly shift, your head tilts and turns ever so slightly, your mouth twitches and moves, etc.

My personal take on Uncanny Valley: If you trace our ancestors back, we mostly come from Homo Sapien Sapiens and a little bit Homo Sapien Neanderthalus, but there were other Homo Sapiens at other points. In other words, there were things that looked human but, by out standards, weren't. Uncanny valley might have developed in our ancestors to help them tell the difference between different types of Homo Sapiens. Side fact, the whites of our eyes being so obvious is pretty much unique to humans, and we don't know when it evolved that way, so our ancestors or relatives might have had more animal looking eyes (less whites, larger irises). This would explain why, at least from what I can tell, eyes are a very big part of the uncanny valley; it would be a very good way to tell Homo Sapiens apart from each other depending on what kind of eyes they have. Another side note, the feeling of uncanney valley from expressions, like how he was saying it's unnerving if you slow an expression down by half, is more to do with empathy and stuff. I don't fully understand it, but Dr. K has a good video on that kinda stuff. I think it's called "Why do people think you're creepy" or something XD

Maybe the recognition of humans through instinct could have come from how during early humans there were several sub species of humans that we would’ve had to avoid for our own safety and reproduction and so we likely developed a natural safety system to distinguish human from non human
