The production of PVDC was only partly stopped due to environmental concerns. Chief among the reasons was cost - it actually breaks down very near it's production temperature, turning it from transparent to brown, which means only a small error during production can ruin a batch. I suspect if PVDC were cheaper than its PET replacement, the stuff would still be made from PVDC.

The problem now is that it only sticks to itself now, it used to actually stick to the bowls you were covering, now you have to use enough to stretch it over itself so it'll stick
@Jatt2613

See, I have trouble even getting it to stick to itself. I'll cover a bowl or whatever and try to push it down around the edges onto itself to hold tight, and it just loosens up as soon as I let go and release the tension. I end up using way more than needed so there's a bunch of extra to scrunch up and sort of roll over itself so it holds. I definitely remember when I was younger and a tiny breeze would make one corner fold up and suddenly like 3 feet of it were gluing itself together and becoming completely useless, and I'd rather have that.
@OrigamiMarie

Jatt2613 I have figured out a trick for this. Get a little water on your fingers and run them around the edge of the bowl, getting it damp. Then put on the cling wrap, and it will stick more easily.

And that's why Ziploc bags and aluminum foil are now MUCH more popular than plastic wrap. Personally, I miss the old cling wrap. It worked SO MUCH better there is just no comparison. As a chef, even industrial "cling" wraps have suffered. I used to individually wrap all sorts of baked goods in industrial cling wrap every day. In those days I could use just one layer, no tape or adhesive, and know that the product would still be sealed, fresh and not absorbing the odors (and flavors) of the product next to it on the shelf. Unfortunately, not only does the new plastic wrap not cling to itself or anything else, but it doesn't keep the odors in, OR out, either. Cookie sales have definitely dropped since I haven't been able to individually wrap cookies and put them in a basket next to the register.

I remember as a kid there were 2 types of clingfilm; the good stuff, and the microwave-safe stuff which was thicker and not as clingy. You could almost blow bubbles in the good stuff, and if you poked your finger through it sometimes it would grip the end of your finger so tight it would hurt. And then one day it seemed you could only buy microwave-safe clingfilm.
@fredbloggs6080
@fredbloggs6080 Жыл бұрын
What you call the good stuff is probably a type of polyvinyl chloride film with a lot of plasticizers in it to make it stretchy and clingy, which is why it couldn't be microwaved. However, the original Saran wrap sold in the United States until 2004, was also superior in that it would stick better and block moisture, orders and oxygen much better as shown in this video. That was made out of polyvinylidene chloride and could be microwaved. You can still buy it in a couple of brands from Japan on Amazon or eBay. Saran wrap today, as well as Glad wrap, is made out of low density polyethylene, which is also microwavable.

The real question I have here is: "Does the benefits of the freshness sealing power of polyethylene, while less than the Saran wrap, outweigh the toxic pollutants it puts into the atmosphere when destroyed?" When they destroyed Saran Wrap, it puts a lot of toxic pollution into the atmosphere. When they destroy this new formula, does it put any pollution out there? Does it put out more pollution than the value of just throwing out the food when it goes bad? And also, how much longer does this new formulation keep food fresh compared to just not covering it? Or using a tupperware or other sealable and reusable container? Is it worth it in the long run to use this new formula as opposed to nothing at all as opposed to saran wrap?
@IOffspringI
@IOffspringI 6 жыл бұрын
1. Yes, but don't destroy it. Recycle it! 2. Yes, but considerably less. 3. No, and consider eating your food before it turns bad. 4. From a scale of 1 to 10, probably a 9. 5. Wat?

Is the new formula completely free of dangerous compounds, or just have lower amounts of other dangerous chemicals? Because if it has only one fifth the toxicity of the old formula, what good is it, if I end up using five layers of plastic to keep my food fresh and fridge odor free?

I'm guessing PVDC was also used in packing tape in the past. I still have an old roll of saran wrap from the '80s; it's discolored and a bit weird at this point, so I only use it for non-food applications, but it has a very distinct smell to it. A smell that I also clearly remember from using packing tape in the old days. It's a smell I started to notice going away about fifteen to twenty years ago, so I'm guessing that smell was the PVDC that was in these products.

Question: How does water ruin electronics? And why doesn't it correct itself when the device dries out?
@gregsun974
@gregsun974 6 жыл бұрын
Water contains ions. These make said water conductive, which creates a huge mess in fragile electronics. Moreover, we use metals to conduct electricity in electronic devices. For long exposure times, water along with ions and diffused oxygen will react and "corrode" the metals, turning them into non-conductive compounds, effectively ruining the circuit.
@JohnDCrafton
@JohnDCrafton 6 жыл бұрын
The water itself isn't what causes damage, it's the electrically conductive particles that are dissolved in the water. These particles make the water more conductive, which causes circuits to connect that aren't meant to connect (sometimes called a "short circuit", or "short" for short). Once a circuit gets damaged in this way, it's not recoverable, so when the water is removed it's still damaged. If an electronic device gets wet when it is completely unpowered (no current running through any part of it), usually it will still be functional once the water is removed. A short circuit only occurs if there is current.
@RubixB0y
@RubixB0y 6 жыл бұрын
Rahsaan Footman Because water often han ions in it that make it conductive. These conductive water bridges short circuit parts of the electronics so current flows in directions and amounts it shouldn't. Sometimes these short circuit currents cause irreversible damage to the semi-conductors the electronic chips are made out of so even when the water dries out the chips don't work the same way anymore. That is why people use deionized water in their computer cooling loops, it isn't conductive(fresh out of the bottle) so if it gets on the circuits they are less likely to be damaged. This in also why you shouldn't turn on any electronics you suspect have water damage without first removing the water to the best of your ability and have the device placed in a bag of rice for nearly a week. If you get rid of the water before you turn on the electricity you can avoid damaging the circuits.
@lordgarion514
@lordgarion514 6 жыл бұрын
Rahsaan Footman Water doesn't harm electronics. In fact, you can buy,not build, a cooling setup that has your entire computer inside a fish tank full of water. Water doesn't really conduct electricity. It's the minerals dissolved in the water. But the damage done is physical. When it shorts it physically damages(like burns and melts) the components. No way to reverse that.
@rednull862
@rednull862 6 жыл бұрын
The water is conductive and so causes short circuits. Even if you dried it out, the shorts burnt up whatever they were connected to and so broke the circuit, resulting in said electronic no longer working.

The trouble is that soft plastic doesn't recycle the same way as hard plastics. Hard plastics are pelletized and melted down. Soft plastic like Cling Wrap and plastic bags can jam up the mechanisms of machines used to process other plastics and don't pelletize. I think you can put it with plastic bags and take them to grocery stores that have bins for soft plastic recycling.

Wow, I noticed it mostly because it does not tangle as easily and you can usually recover it, before it was like it welded itself on contact. All this time I thought they had caved to consumer pressure to make it easier to untangle. Thanks. Very surprising they did not market this action they took or if they did they really failed...

I store greasy foods with glass containers, then add a layer of cling wrap, then the plastic lid. This makes washing the plastic lid very easy because the cling wrap acts as the grease barrier.

It's definitely gone down in quality but that doesn't mean it's useless. You just have to try a little harder to apply it. If you are bad at this you could try pushing it down on top of whatever your wrapping. If that isn't an option, like maybe it's a liquid, get the press & seal stuff. It's more expensive but easier to use so ppl have higher success rates with the stuff.

I have used Glad Wrap almost all of my life. It is not only clingy; but stretches a little as well to create an airtight seal. I found that Saran Wrap never worked as well, even before they changed the formula. Glad Wrap even uses Cling Wrap as part of it's brand name.
@fredbloggs6080
@fredbloggs6080 Жыл бұрын
Glad Wrap is the same basic material as the Saran wrap now. The original Saran wrap was a little thicker before it was changed in 2004. However if you think they glad wrap Christian and airtight seal, you are mistaken if you watch this video. The original saran wrap made out of polyvinylidene chloride was a much better barrier. You can still buy it in a couple of brands from Japan on Amazon or eBay.

I have a question that has been bothering me for a while now and never got a good answer for it. What is the difference between chemical colour and physical colour? For example, when adding food colouring to water or anything for that matter, does every "colour" have a chemical property that only affects the way it reflects and absorbs light or is it made from different molecules which again in turn have their own way of reflecting and absorbing light? If each food colouring "colour" is made of different molecules, how do they keep the taste neutral? Would really appreciate if you could make a video about it, guys!

Yeah, get the edge of the bowl or whatever you're wrapping wet and it will cling better. If they could make it thinner, it would cling better. But, then it would also be more permeable. I never even thought of that aspect of the stuff.

Well, I live in dry ass Southern California. I found that if I pull the cling wrap off the roll real fast, there is a static build up that happens on the wrap. It seems to really help the film adhere to bowls and whatnot. Oh who knows. Maybe it's just in my head. It seems to help though.
