Even Asian households in the US are multigenerational. We actually pool our wealth and live pretty comfortably. We all get along and we don't even have to struggle to make ends meet. In fact we have a surplus of money so we can have nice things too. It sure beats trying to "live on your own" and live on just beans and rice for the rest of your life.

I hate living with my parents. It's nothing against them, I just want my own space. I ended up moving out twice just to move back in twice because of the economy. I have a full-time job. Yet, my choices are living with my parents in a nice house or living in a slum and barely being able to afford to eat. People tell me that's better than living with my parents, which is doesn't make any sense. People assume that my parents pays for everything, which isn't true. I pay my own phone bills, I buy my own food, and I helps my parents pay their bills. I've also paid my student loans off all by myself., Of course, I helps out around the house. Because I live with my parents, people treat me like I'm worse than a sexual predator. Well, that's what it feels like.

I'm in my 30s and still live with my parents. I was financially independent (didn't cost my parents any money) throughout my 20s, but was only working part-time so I couldn't afford my own place. Then in my late 20s, I decided to go back to school and make a career change. I plan to continue living at home until my uni debt is paid off and I have enough to buy my own place, no mortgage and no debt. I find it highly unfortunate that there's such a stigma on adults living with parents in Western countries. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a smart financial move, at the very least.

@hyggeligt007

@@SelfImprovement1111 It is good to see that drive of making your own rules but being broke is nowhere close to the definition of being a desirable outcome of living. Unless you want to experience first-hand how poverty works. One can't go around making their own rules while being broke. Independence requires 3 pillars to sustain itself: food, shelter and hygiene. Failing any one of this three will likely cause mental collapse to happen way faster than you'd expect. Read up on Maslow's hierarchy of needs as well. May you get a job that pays enough to maintain those three pillars. Until then, keep re-skilling yourself for the market while you still have access to these basic needs.

Im 24 and still living with my parents after college and honestly I love it. Yes there are benefits to living alone or with roommates (like I did while attending school) but right now this just feels right. I can save up to 80% of my paycheck and instead of being in debt my whole life or working to pay the bills I'm working to build a better and easier future for myself. I get a lot of pitty from my friends but its almost funny because I think I might be the happiest and least stressed out of all of them. I know when the time is right I will find my own place (and BUY instead of rent) but right now, with COVID especially, the time doesn't feel right. I also think I've learned so much about myself and done so much healing while living here. You're right, we shouldn't live our lives based on other peoples opinions. I am happy and I feel good so that's what I care about. Thanks Gary

Honestly staying with your parents is more logical people complain about being stuck in an apartment and being lonley. You can fix that by staying with your parents and helping them get a huge house for everyone instead of going off on your on because your supposed to do it. People often give in to peer pressure or pride just to say I'm living on my own. People need to grow up and learn to get along with there parents if they want a big home. What is the point of big house if you have no one to share it with.

House rules suck, though. Why the f*ck should we be forced to follow our parents outdated, traditional beliefs when we can just bounce and get our own place so we can do whatever we want? Moving out is the logical choice for anybody who wants to free themselves from parental authority. It's not our job to "get along" with our parents, that's typical collectivist propoganda.

I'm 34. My parents are awesome. I built my own house on a trailer and have it parked on their land. I pay rent. I pay all my own bills and work full time. I enjoy spending time with my parents and want to enjoy our time together while they are still alive (in their late 60s). Their house will be mine when they die anyway so why leave? I've lived on my own before and it was nothing but struggle and loneliness, now with all the money I save, I have gone on vacations around the world. I have no interest in having kids or getting married any time soon so why would I move out, waste money on rent, and spend all my time alone? It's one thing if living at home is toxic but if not, try to see the good aspects. People who say you NEED to move out obviously don't have good relationships with their parents or have bought into capitalist bs of "everyone needs to buy a house".

I worked at different jobs in IT and software engineering. I started 50k and made my way to 80k a year during my 20 years. I also stayed with my parents because all of the jobs I lived in were in the same city. There was no point in wasting money on rent if I could just live at home and just contribute to some of the expenses at a fraction of the price of an apartment. I managed to save up all my money because I hated my career and decided to retire early. 80k is garbage pay if you work 100 hour weeks. I got sick of it and just quit. I just work on my hobbies of computer repair and drawing now, and also make an income from them as well. I don't even work hard on those either, as I only do that whenever I'm bored. Living with my parents while saving and investing was the best decision I've made. But now I feel sorry for all the other people who bought into the "standing on your own two feet" and "living on your own". They wasted all their money on rent, and they'll probably never be able to see retirement. Live with your parents when you can and save your money. You'll probably work until you're old and too broken to physically move if you don't.

I think western culture needs to shift so that ther stigma of young people (up to say 30) is completley removed. The amount of money that peeople spend on rent is silly, when Asian families are getting wealthier due to using this non-stigma approach.

I moved out at 18 had great success and a rollercoaster of life BUT 27 shit hit the fan in my life and I wound up moving in with my mom and brother..I’ve been back for 8 months now and I’ve been devising a strategy to get back out..I feel like a failure but at the same time this has helped me in a few key areas of my life that would have taken longer to achieve..I think it’s worth noting that when I moved out at 18 I didn’t care how my parents felt about it..I did it anyways...but now 27..I sort of feel that when I leave..my mom and brother are going to feel abandoned..it’s weird..but I’m trying to block that aspect out and get back out there anyways because I’m so much better..my confidence is way up, obviously..and I take better care of my self physically..Im very excited to get back out into the world but I know I cannot let shit hit the fan again so Ill take the failure and learn from it, make sure this type of situation doesn’t happen again

When I got out of the Navy and wanted to focus on using my Post 9/11 G.I bill it definitely helped me to move back with my mom. Also me and my wife were going through the immigration process, and was going to take her some time to move to the U.S anyway so it was great for me. I feel sorry for people that end up going bankrupt and live their whole life in the red, because they don’t want their high school friends finding out their living at home with their parents.

Good for you dude, my bros still live with me and my mom who are both in their 20's, just a quick question for you. How does it feel to have such a huge sibling age gap? For me my brothers are kinda older than me by like 13, 11, and 9 years apart. We're really close though, I love them so much. Like growing up I always thought how weird i was born a decade after them. We all grew up in different times.

From my side, I think it is difficult to live far away from your parents, as I've developed a solid connection with them. It has been 8 years; it is like 80 years, especially when they are elderly and I am the sole breadwinner for them. They just want you to be a consumer… we should focus on community instead of separating because society said so! If you follow mainstream you’ll probably end up in a midlife crisis around the age of 40-50… not knowing who you are or what you really want from life… perhaps a divorce and maybe lots of trouble dealing with other peoples shit! Paying alimony or maybe even your not able to see your damn kids…. People perhaps laughing at me but in the end, i play the sad songs for them!

I really admire Gary. If more people thought like him...I live with my dad. When I was 19-23 I was out of parents house. I moved back in after I tried and tried to do things on my own. Little did I know from the start minimum wage wasn’t enough anyway. Also jobs can let you go anytime. Now I am going to school to get my cdl to become a truck driver. Community college. In the long run it will all be worth it. I’m 25 now. Things are slowly getting better. I have a part time job. I’m not worried about how much I make or how many hours I get but that doesn’t mean that (boss music playing) my dad or anyone else doesn’t care...When I start school I won’t be able to work much at either one of these jobs. Maybe weekends at the most. I don’t want to look for jobs I’m gonna get the same experience and pay regardless. I’ve tried that...I’ve been working since I was 16...anyways that’s all I got for now folks ✌️

And I’m being told everyday how I’m not enough and how everything I like is wrong. Respectfully, as someone who did this until they both passed at the age of 34, it depends HEAVILY on the parents. Some parents are hideous people, others are too mothering and tightly clutching the apron strings. Sometimes it can work wonderfully, but it can also harm more than help. I am in the camp of not living with your parents past an appropriate age, but then again that's just based on my experiences. The money saved wasn't worth it.

Teenagers prefer debt and freedom than happiness and freedom. Living with your parents is normal all around the world. The US has sold the idea to everyone that "i raised you for 18 years, now get out of my life" that parents and children are part of the problem. I'm 24 and still living with my parents. I pay part of my rent and help with the bills. I dont go out with friends much so i dont have a need to be explaining stuff to them that often. And i'm happy to be with them.

my father and I have a great relationship. I had to move out at 18 because my mom chose a new career in a new city. it wasn't best for me to go with her. my father wasn't in a position to have me move in unless I really needed to as he was moving. now I am 21 and am moving in with my father. my bf and I currently live together and we are over extended due to the rental market being so much higher now. we plan to utilize the time at home to wait out the upcoming recession to avoid accumulating un necessary debt. plus it allows us to pursue post secondary. I am all for moving home if the situation allows for it. there's a stigma amongst other family members of the same age, but I see it as us doing what we can to come out of the upcoming recession more successfully then those trying to extend themselves who will inevitably get a little burned.

Let's say you work and live in the same town your parents live in and you decide to move out an rent an apartment. Why? Where is the benefit? Would you not rather that rent money go towards contributing to your parent's household vs a random landlord's pockets? Let's say both your parents are working now it becomes your income plus your parent's contributing into this household. It is a three income household so your income gets factored in for household bills and expenses. This would also allow you to save up the money to buy a place instead of renting or may allow you to put more money into investments or rental properties.

It all depends on your lifestyle. If your lonely and don’t do a lot, then living at home might be good for you. I moved out when I was 18 and don’t regret it one bit. I work 40 hours a week(Monday-Friday) and it’s so fun when the weekends come, especially on Saturday nights because I like going on Grindr and finding a quick hookup for the night and then inviting him over my place to have some fun. One other benefit of having your own place is that you can order whatever you want online without having your parents question you what it is. I just love living on my own, it’s so fun. Also people talk about saving money while living at home but I am paying 1800 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment and I am still able to max out my 401k every year. In my case, moving out of my parents house when I was 18 was the best decision that I ever made. Anyone have any questions for me?

I'm 26 years old and I'm still living with my parents. At least then I won't have to be homeless while I'm developing my own self employed business online. I'm being paid while I'm working from home, but there are times when I feel left behind in life because of where I live. I see other people who are at my age who have a well paid job and earned enough money to afford their own home. The more I see that, the more I feel left behind. But the thing is, i also forget that it takes time for a business I'm creating to take off. It doesn't just happen over night. Which means that until I'm being paid enough to have my own house or a flat, living with my parents would be the best option.

I have tried several times to pack a bag and walk out the front door, and still plan to, but nothing sticks. I turn back around to the warm house and never learn to ask for help from my fellow man. I think the concept of you MUST independent and live outside parents' home are old ideas (as single, couples it is diff story). Both ways could work. I have been independent living since college but moved back to my parents home close to 40 (unplanned). There are pros and cons to both and neither is right or wrong. I hope people make decision following their own path rather than social pressure. I miss my own time for living by myself but at the same time try to spend time with them before they pass.

Completely agree with this but it's kinda other way round in India, people from generations are living with their parents along with their siblings and their families, but they loose the autonomy over their lives. Parents try to never let their children live by themselves even if they are 40 and above and think that their children owe for raising them and parents want to have control ovee their children's lives. If someone moves out of their parents' home in India they are vilified for being selfish.

Hmmm, I don't quite agree. Maybe it's like, if you're gonna leave your parents home, don't leave because you hate them or stuff like that (trying to live a life that other people advocate -Gary Vee said something like that; for example, "Leave your home and grow up, suceed thrive!"). If one is to leave their parents home, it is to be because the person genuinely wants to; the person is not being pushed or pressured...., and even if they are being pushed by other people, they should decide based on what the individual person believes to be best -person arrives at a decision based on their internal conviction. Don't leave your parent's home with bad feelings against them, or remorse, because that can intervene with your decision in a bad way -it can block you from seeing things clearly.

Bullshyt. My parents never could or had to move back in with their parents while being in their 20s or 30s. My parents are in their early 60s now and that wasn't even an option they could resort to having in their young adult years. My mother and I (when I was young child) did move in with her sister (my aunt) for a couple of years when she was finishing up her college degree so she could get back on her feet. The way I look at is, the government wants us to work forever and never own anything. And if you do own something, they'll figure out how to tax you in every way.

It's embarrassing and makes me selfish conscious and worry about what others say. I'm Moy in my younger 20s or younger 30s but mid 30s and sometimes just don't want to be here anymore. I'm so ashamed I don't know what to do. Yes I always had a dream of buying a health after graduating college for my whole family to stay with me. Hey I found this video and it was very reassuring because I’m 21 turn 22 dec 7🥳 and I really am interested in nomadic culture van and car living but yes like you said I still see that as a form of pride or ego because you can build a headquarters or base by either buying land with multiple people and building alternative style houses and things so you are on a appropriate budget or live with a lot of roommates under a reasonable occupancy house? While you take your time to figure out life and such. $1500.00 rent and it’s 7 people in one house or something so you split it 200 a month? That’s an incredible deal!!! Mind you having to get used to communal living but I’m still working on my ego and things to live amongst others but I really hope we figure things out I get really stressed because of the paradigm society is under but I transcend!!!
